Your Baby Has Congenital Hypothyroidism
When a child is born with this condition, he or she lacks thyroid hormone at birth. Symptoms may not be apparent right away, but often appear in infants as prolonged jaundice, sleeping more than usual, and difficulty eating. How does this relate to soy-based infant formula? If your baby is diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism, research suggests that choosing a soy-free formula may be beneficial.
In two studies, the authors found that infants with congenital hypothyroidism who were fed soy formula experienced a prolonged increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone compared to babies fed soy-free formula, which complicated management of the condition. They concluded that these infants may benefit from a soy-free formula, closer monitoring, and a potential need for medication dosing adjustments to manage symptoms.
Which Dairy Free Baby Formula Is Our Favorite
While its hard to choose a single formula, we have to give the top spot to the Gerber Good Start Soy 3 formula.
Formulated for babies over nine months old and toddlers, this Gerber soy formula helps give your baby a healthy start to life with non-GMO ingredients, which is a relief for parents who are concerned about GMO soy.
What parents love about the Gerber Good Start Soy 3 formula is that their babies actually like to drink it. Formulas can be known to have a rather funky taste and odor that can make them repulsive to certain babies, which is why Gerbers palatability gives it major bonus points in our book.
Parents have also found that this formula helps significantly with frustrating digestive issues that caused their babies pain and discomfort, like gassiness and constipation. They also like that its generally more affordable than other lactose-free formulas.
The only drawback to this formula isnt really much of a drawback at all: its not designed for babies under 9 months old, but if youre interested in trying this formula and you have a newborn, you can try the Stage 1 version of this formula until theyre old enough for Stage 3.
Finding the right dairy free formula for your baby can be tricky, but we hope that our guide can help guide you in the right direction. Have you tried any of these formulas? What was your experience? Let us know in the comments!

Babys Only Organic Soy Formula
Babys Only Organic Soy Formula is a soy-based formula made specifically for toddlers. This formula gets bonus points for being 100% organic and free of GMOs.
Babys Only is made without corn or gluten, making it a great choice for toddlers with sensitivities to those foods, or parents who wish to avoid feeding their child a bottle full of corn syrup.
Toddlers seem to like the taste of this formula, and parents have seen improvements in digestive and skin issues after switching to Babys Only.
The most obvious drawback to this formula is that its only for toddlers aged 1 year or older, so parents of infants will have to try a different formula. And its obviously not for kids with sensitivity to soy!

Your Baby Is At Higher Risk For Reflux
Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus and causes discomfort. There may be a correlation between reflux and milk protein in babies, though some babies without an allergy may simply be more sensitive to dairy. Eliminating dairy from their diet may alleviate some of the discomfort. Having mild or occasional reflux, typically observed as spitting up after feeding, is very common for healthy babies with developing digestive systems. In this case, babies typically arent irritable. However, if you suspect that your baby is experiencing more severe reflux with eating, and is noticeably more irritable, considering a non dairy formula can be a good place to start. Some signs of acid reflux in babies can include crying more around mealtime, slowed or halted weight gain, not wanting to eat or take formula, frequent or forceful vomiting, coughing and wheezing, stool changes that look like coffee grounds or have blood in them, slowed heartbeat, or difficulty breathing. In addition to considering a dairy free formula, its always best to speak to your childs pediatrician if you suspect acid reflux.
Israelis Develop The Worlds First Vegetable
Up to half of all infants fed baby formula suffer gastro distress, skin rashes, respiratory problems and other signs that they cant tolerate cows milk. The only alternative, soy formula, is a last resort because of possible hormonal effects of its powerful phytoestrogens.
A new vegetable-based product called INDI , developed by two Israeli baby-food executives, could provide parents across the world with a long sought-after option containing neither cows milk nor soy but delivering all the nutrition required by international regulations.
This game-changing formula came out of research, trial and error by Uriel Kesler and Hamutal Yitzhak, owners of Heart baby food. Yitzhak was previously Israels category manager for Similac infant formula at Abbott Labs, and Kesler handled consumer products and baby food for Promedico.
When I worked for Similac, I saw that 50 percent of moms were switching formulas all the time because their babies were having symptoms of one kind or another, and the doctors really dont have anything to tell them, says Yitzhak, who was one of the first to alert the world to the hazards of BPA plastic in baby bottles.
About 130 million babies are born each year, Kesler tells ISRAEL21c. For their first three years, they are consuming mostly milk-based nutrition from one resource the poor cow and on the margins you have soy-based formulas.
The time was right for a whole new approach.

What To Look For In Non
Options are somewhat limited when it comes to non-dairy baby formula but there may be more being released onto the market in the future. Its important to check the nutrition label as nutrition is going to be the single most critical aspect of a healthy formula for your baby. The ingredients for a soy formula will most likely contain soy protein, corn syrup or possibly sucrose, vegetable oils, and oftentimes iron. In order to be beneficial to babys nerve, brain, and eye health, you will want to purchase a formula that is rich in ARA and DHA omega fatty acids which are resourced through algae.
Its a good idea to purchase products that have been made within the United States as they are not allowed to be manufactured with any type of melamine in the food products whereas baby formula that has been made in China has been linked to melamine which is a chemical that is used in the making of pesticides, fertilizers, and cleaning products.
You will also want to decide on which type of formula you wish to have for your baby as far as powder, which is the least expensive choice and can be mixed with water. There is also liquid concentrates which come already diluted with water but are generally more costly. And then there are the formulas that are already to use and can be poured right into babys bottle, but these tend to be the most expensive. The type that you use will depend on your familys lifestyle and budget.
Feeding In The Event Of An Allergy To Cow Milk
If an allergy to cow milk has been determined, then you must not give your baby any cow milk and also no products that contain cow milk in any form.
Fortunately, an allergy to cow milk can often disappear. Hence, many toddlers who are affected can tolerate milk and milk products without any problem around their 3rd birthday. You should talk to your paediatrician about when cow milk can be reintroduced.
In the event of an allergy to cow milk:
- the classical starting and follow-on formulas that are based on cow milk are not suitable.
- Even hidden milk components such as milk powder, casein, and cream have to be avoided. In case of doubt, ask the manufacturer!
Based on the state of the art in food science, hypoallergenic food provides the most effective protection for the prevention of a potential cow milk allergy when it comes to breast milk replacement products. The cow milk protein in it is broken down to the greatest possible extent so that its allergy-inducing properties are reduced considerably.
Since hypoallergenic food is based on cow milk, it still contains a certain amount of more or less intact protein components. An immune system that is already on alert status will react to that. Therefore, HA milk foods are unsuitable for an existing allergy to cow milk protein and must also no longer be given.

Which Milks Should Be Excluded
All cow’s milk and soys milk including fresh, UHT, sterilised and dried milk should be avoided. The diet should be free of cow’s milk protein , milk sugar and soya proteins. Other mammalian milks are not suitable alternatives to cow’s milk as their protein structure is similar and may still cause and allergic response. Therefore, do not use milks such as goats, sheep, camel and buffalo milk.
How Important Is Dha
Anyone familiar with baby formula has certainly heard the buzzword DHA, but what exactly is it, and do babies actually need it? DHA is docosahexaenoic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that is naturally found in breast milk. This fatty acid is believed to be crucial to the healthy development of the eyes and brain, which is why synthetic forms of DHA are often added to infant formulas, even though it is not required by the FDA.
As it turns out, it hasnt been conclusively proven that synthetic DHA actually does anything to improve babies development but it hasnt been shown to have a negative effect, either, so theres no harm in giving your baby a DHA-fortified formula if you feel its necessary.

How Do I Know If My Baby Has Celiac Disease
A: Celiac disease is a condition that causes the body to react badly to gluten, a protein found in wheat. It can cause digestive problems and other health issues. Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating and weight loss. If you suspect your baby has celiac disease, talk with your doctor about getting tested for it.
Ingredients To Avoid In Organic Formula
- Corn syrup, corn syrup solids, glucose syrup
- GMO ingredients
- Artificial preservatives
Organic milk – The milk in organic formula comes from cows and goats who are treated with high welfare standards, fed a diet of grass and organic grain, and kept on sustainably-run farms. This makes their milk as pure as possible, improving the overall taste and nutrient content. The cows milk used in Holle Bio meets the Demeter standard, while Lebenswert milk meets the Bioland standard. Both of these certifications go beyond the European Unions basic standards for organic farming.
Lactose – The main carbohydrate in breast milk is lactose , which is also found in cows milk and goats milk, although in smaller quantities. Thus, in addition to a base of organic cows milk or goats milk, the best organic formulas often contain additional lactose, in order to approximate the high carbohydrate content of breast milk. Lactose is the predominant carbohydrate source in HiPP& Kendamil formulas.
Maltodextrin – Although maltodextrin is not a component of breast milk, it can be a beneficial formula ingredient when incorporated in small quantities. Maltodextrin is a complex carbohydrate with repeating glucose units that can be easily broken down for a long-lasting source of energy. Most Holle and Lebenswert formulas contain some maltodextrin, and sometimes starch.

Why Neocate Infant Dropped The Soy Oil
Loads of parents and caregivers, and even some healthcare professionals, contact us asking about the various ingredients in our Neocate products. Here are some common questions we receive:
- Why do you include ___ as an ingredient?
- Do Neocate products contain soy?
That last question is one of my favorites, because our answer is so unique. You may be aware that a lot of infants with a cow milk allergy also are allergic to soy. This is sometimes termed milk soy protein intolerance . For a while, U.S. Neocate families have requested if we could remove the soy oil from Neocate Infant. They told us that, while the medical community told them highly refined soy oil was okay, they were still wary.
On top of requests from parents, some U.S. healthcare professionals also asked us if it would be possible to remove soy oil. Heres a quick history behind removing soy oil from Neocate Infant. Ill also try to answer some questions from a medical perspective about soy oil for those with a soy allergy.
Cows Milk Protein Intolerance Vs Lactose Intolerance
According to La Leche League International, a babys reaction to dairy is usually due to an allergy or sensitivity to the proteins in cows milk. When a mother consumes dairy products, large protein molecules from the cows milk can pass into human milk and can cause digestive upset for a sensitive baby.
