Tis that time of year again, dear friends. Thats right, its CANDY TIME. Make it vegan candy time.

Okay, lets be real: when is it not vegan candy time, am I right? Well, theres just something about the Halloween season that makes me crave those tasty vegan gluten free candy treats approximately 10,000 times more than usual.

So, in case youre like me and ready to dive into a ginormous bowl of chocolate-based deliciousness but dont really know where to start, Ive assembled a few of my favorite vegan candy recipes to help you out.

How To Make A Gluten

It only takes 45 minutes from start to finish! This easy gluten free almond flour pie crust recipe is definitely one to keep on hand. Its so easy but turns out perfectly every time. Gluten sensitivity or not, this is something that the whole family will be able to enjoy.

Preparing the Dough

  • Prepare Pie Dish, Preheat Oven: Lightly grease a pie pan with cooking spray or butter and set aside. Preheat your oven to 350.
  • Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl mix your dry ingredients- almond flour and salt. Then add in your melted butter and egg. With a hand mixer, mix all the ingredients together. Once it has all come together knead the mixture by hand a bit to bring it all into a big ball.
  • Roll Out: Lay one sheet of parchment on a flat surface and place the dough on top, press flat and lay another sheet on top and roll dough out into a circle that will fit your pie pan.
  • Add to Pan: Remove the top sheet and place the dough in the pie pan, dough side down. Once you have it centered on the pie pan, remove the other sheet of wax paper.
  • Shape: It is normal for your crust to fall apart at this step, this is when you will press the dough into the pan evenly until all the pan is covered. At this point you can make a decorative border.
  • Baking

  • Bake: Poke around the bottom of your gluten-free pie crust with a fork, and bake for 15-20 minutes with a crust shield covering the edges. Crust should be a golden color when done.

    How To Know If Candy Contains Gluten

    The easiest way to know if the candy youre reaching for is gluten-free is by reading through the ingredients list on the packaging and looking for keywords, like barley malt,wheat flour, and glucose syrup. These are key indicators that a candy has gluten ingredients.

    Another way to determine if candy has gluten is to look for a gluten-free label. If a candy has a gluten-free label , then you know theres less than 20ppm of gluten in the packaging.

    Some candy packages have notes like May contain traces of wheat or gluten or processed in a facility that manufactures wheat. In this case, you know theres a risk of cross contamination with gluten ingredients in that candy, and thankfully the brand is being up front and straightforward about it.

    In this case, do your best to determine your choice based on what you know about your level of sensitivity to gluten. Some folks can tolerate trace levels of gluten, while others have big reactions. Use your best judgment and if all else fails, look for that gluten-free label.

    What Does Gluten Do To Your Body

    Everyone reacts differently to gluten but for some sensitive individuals, it can cause problems.

    According to The Harvard School of Public Health, gluten can cause fatigue, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, and malnutrition in certain people who are sensitive to it.

    It is estimated that 1 in 133 people have celiac disease in the United States but 83% have been misdiagnosed with someone else.

    So it can be scary to think about trick or treating on Halloween and getting a bag full of candy that you are not sure you can eat.

    In this last section, here is simply a group of candies that you might want to eat on their own or they might be candies that you would want to use to decorate gingerbread houses or other baked items around Christmas time.

    Gummy Bears And Gummy Candy

    Many brands of gummy bears use glucose syrup which is derived from wheat, making many brands of gummy candy not a safe option for a gluten-free diet.

    That said, there are brands that are gluten-free, but youll need to review the ingredients lists of each brand and package that you find. Some brands may have gluten-free gummy bears, but have entirely different ingredients for another gummy candy they make, so look at every package that you plan to buy before eating.

    Most all brands of gummy bears contain no dairy and are considered safe for a dairy-free diet.

    Those marked with a mean they have gluten-free labels, otherwise the rest of the list contain no gluten ingredients.

    Ingredients Needed To Make These Gluten

    • vanilla extract

    I like to use a combination of cream of tartar and baking soda to replace baking powder in recipes. I use this All Natural Cream of Tartar and love it!

    Baking powder often contains gluten, cornstarch, and aluminum, so I avoid it while baking. But I still sometimes want the results of baking powder, so that is why I mix baking soda and cream of tartar together.

    Cream of tartar is a byproduct of fermenting wine into grapes and is used to help make baked goods more chewy. When combined with baking soda, it becomes a leavening agent .

    I also used Little Secrets Dark Chocolate Candies to make these cookies. I liked cooking with them and using them instead of M& Ms because they are dairy-free and they are made without any artificial colors or flavors.

    You can use regular chocolate chips or any brand of chocolate candies as well.

    Storing And Freezing Instructions

    This cake can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. It can also be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.

    If you want to bake these layers a few days in advance, you most certainly can. Allow the cake layers to cool, cover them tightly in plastic wrap, and freeze until you a ready to stack and decorate the cake. Remove the cake layers from the freezer approximately 1 hour before you plan to stack and decorate and allow them to thaw slightly at room temperature.

    This cake can also be frozen fully stacked and decorated. Special occasions are often busy and I will sometimes freeze an entire finished cake a few days in advance to save time and stress. The night before you plan to serve the cake, remove it from the freezer and place it in the fridge to slowly thaw overnight. Do not take it straight from the freezer to room temperature. Doing so will cause condensation and you will risk the cake toppling.

    Do I Need To Use Pie Weights

    Almond flour is a bit more dense than regular flour, so it tends to hold its shape better. Using pie weights is optional! If you want your gluten-free pie crust to be as perfect as possible, you can use pie weights, uncooked rice, or dried beans in the bottom to keep it from rising or cracking while it bakes.

    How To Make These Cookie Bars

    Its actually pretty easy to make these Gluten-free Dairy-free Chocolate Candy Cookie Bars.

    In one bowl, you mix together the almond flour, tapioca flour, coconut flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt together.

    In another bowl, you mix together the olive oil, coconut sugar, egg, egg yolk and vanilla extract together.

    Then, you add the bowl of dry ingredients into the bowl of wet ingredients, along with the chocolate candies and mix.

    Then, the last thing that needs to be done is to bake these bad boys!

    For me, it worked to bake these about 22-23 minutes. They will look like they arent ready to be taken out, but trust me, they continue to set as they continue to cool in the pan.

    If you want these cookie bars to be more gooey, cook them 22-23 minutes, and if you dont cook them for 25-28 minutes.

    Here Are A Few Assembly Tips:

    • Fully Cooled Cake Layers: even if a tiny bit warm, layers will slip when warm. Ensure that each cake layer is fully cooled if not even a bit chilled. I will even work with semi-frozen cake layers if I had to bake them a few days before stacking.
    • Leveled Cake Layers: flat and level cake layers will sit far easier than crooked ones. I use this super easy cake tool to ensure each cake layer is perfectly level.
    • Keep the Cake Chilled: if at any point you begin to feel the cake slip or the frosting is too soft to work with, pop the cake and the frosting back into the fridge to chill. Remember, dont rush it. Take your time.

    Candy Cane Cake: Step By Step Instructions

    Step 1: Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and xanthan gum together and set aside.

    Step 2: Cream together the butter, sugar, and oil until light and fluffy

    Step 3: Add in the eggs, one at a time, and mix until fully combined.

    Step 4: Pour in the sour cream and vanilla and mix again until combined.

    Step 5: Combine half the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

    Step 6: Pour in the milk and mix until combined.

    Step 7: Add in the remaining dry ingredients and mix the batter until combined and smooth. Be careful to not overmix the batter at this stage.

    Step 8: Gently fold in the crushed candy canes with a spatula.

    Step 9: Divide the cake batter into three 6-inch cake pans that have been prepared with baking spray and parchment paper and bake for approximately 30-35 minutes. Cool cakes on a cooling rack.

    Step 10: Cream the butter in a mixer on high speed for 10 minutes until light and fluffy. Add in the icing sugar and salt and mix until combined.

    Step 11: Melt the white chocolate and slowly mix it into the frosting.

    Step 12: Add the pink gel food color, if using, and mix on high speed for 5 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl when necessary.

    Tips For Picking Gluten Free Halloween Candy

  • Always read the labels carefully. If you are not sure about an ingredient do not eat them. Candy ingredients can be confusing because they contain a lot of additives and words we don’t recognize. Look for these words to see if the candy contains gluten ingredients like wheat, malt, barley, rye, triticale, or oats.
  • Formulations and ingredients change often so it’s always best to double-check with the manufacturer’s website to be sure.
  • You can’t always rely on the allergen statement disclosures that appear at the end of the ingredient list. You must check the ingredient labels to be sure.
  • You can always donate the gluten-containing candy to a local food bank.

    How To Make Dairy

    White chocolate buttercream frosting is smooth, silky, sweet, and undeniably luxurious. Its the perfect pair to the minty layers in this candy cane cake. Dont get scared to make homemade buttercream, its really quite simple. The key to an ultra-smooth frosting is to fully cream the butter first by itself until its light and fluffy. This step is crucial and cannot be skipped or skimped on.

    Here are a few more tricks to ensure dairy-free white chocolate frosting success:

    • Make sure the butter is at room temperature and cream it on high speed until it is light and fluffy. This step should take anywhere from 5-10 minutes.
    • Melt the white chocolate in 30-second intervals until its fully melted and smooth. Pour the melted chocolate into the frosting while the mixer is on low.
    • Dont add any additional liquid that means we arent even adding vanilla extract.
    • Add the gel food color, if using, slowly. You can always put more in but you can never reduce the saturation once its been added.

    These tips will help you create not just a delicious dairy-free white chocolate frosting, but one that will stack and pipe gorgeously.
