Have your gluten-free baked goods ever been dry or super crumbly? Gluten-free baked goods can be dry and crumbly without any gluten. When you are adapting a recipe that calls for regular, all-purpose flour to a gluten-free version, most of the time, there’s a need for more liquid or fat.

Some alternatives you can try here are to add additional fat, like butter or oil, or liquids such as water or milk. Greek yogurt or sour cream can also help keep the batter moist. Go slow, as ¼ cup at a time, until you get the texture you are looking for.

Panera Bread Gluten Free Stance

You wont see a dedicated Panera Bread gluten free menu. That is because they use different terminology. Panera Bread uses the words gluten sensitive menu, gluten conscious and without gluten. Im not sure what I think about it to be honest.

I kind of feel like its a way for them to not take responsibility and avoid the effort customers with celiac disease need to enjoy a delicious meal.

Keep that in mind. Panera Bread has items that do not have gluten but if you are concerned about cross contamination then maybe think twice. At the end of the day, do what is best for you. Panera Bread does have good food, I just wish they would make an effort for the entire gluten free community.

Remember that onion dip you made as a kid?

It was a big tub of sour cream mixed with a Lipton Onion Soup Mix.

How To Eat Gluten

Sometimes albergues will offer a meal with your stay for a few euros. One of our favorite nights on the Camino was in fact one of these group dinners at Albergue Tu Camino in Ontón. We had developed a small Camino family with some fellow pereginos that had been on the trail with us for over a week.

At this table alone, people were speaking English, Portuguese and Spanish, but we all understood each other. The bond that you form with your fellow peregrinos is something truly special, and this was a night Dylan and I will never forget. We drank wine, sang songs, told jokes, and laughed the entire time. I’m still in touch with people at this table – two years later!

Albergue Tu Camino offered a dinner for pereginos – 5 Euro per person. Upon arrival, I had no idea what the meal would include and was extremely hesitant until I spoke to the host. She only spoke Spanish, and I explained to her in Spanish that I had celiac. Without missing a beat, she said:

“No te preocupes!”

Translation: Don’t worry.

She took me into the kitchen and showed me exactly what they were preparing for dinner. For 5 euros, the meal included unlimited red wine, salad, a vegetarian dish, and dessert. There was no flour in anything except the dessert, and she said they’d bring me fruit instead.

It felt like a 5-star treatment after hiking all day!

We ended the evening by leading everyone in song. A tune called “Peregrinos” to the tune of La Bamba, which Dylan played on guitar.

What Can I Get At Starbucks Thats Gluten

You can get oatmeal and tea at Starbucks and they are gluten-free. Starbucks oatmeal is a great and filling way to start your morning, and Earl Grey Tea is a creative alternative to one of their blended Frappuccinos. Youll get all the flavor and none of the gluten.

If you are looking for a quick snack, or to grab an energizing coffee there will be quite a few gluten-free options to choose from at Starbucks.

Gluten Free Dads Reccomendation

I have always been a fan of Panera Bread. I think their business model of being kind of like fast food, but also like a traditional restaurant with healthy food options is solid.

If you have celiac disease, I recommend staying away. If you are following a gluten free diet and cross contamination does not worry you, then you can find some tasty gluten free options at Panera Bread.

I tried the Mediterranean Warm Grain Bowl with chicken and the Baja Warm Grain Bowl with chicken and they were both delicious. They mix brown rice and quinoa as the base which I never even thought about doing. Really great idea! Fresh ingredients on both bowls. The serving size was just right. Not too much, not too little.

    Not Your Average Joes

    Not Your Average Joes is a celiac friendly chain restaurant with an extensive gluten free menu. They have AMAZING gluten free onion rolls that they serve hot out of the oven. Not Your Average Joes is super careful with gluten allergies and cross contamination. They have everything from salads to meat dishes to pasta including a gluten free quesadilla This a great chain restaurant for gluten free with kids too .

    Honesty Is The Best Policy

    I appreciate that Panera Bread is open and honest when it comes to cross contamination. They clearly state on their website Given the likelihood of cross-contamination in our bakery-cafe environment, this list is not suitable for people with Celiac Disease, a heightened gluten sensitivity or a wheat allergy.

    Again, I will emphasize for my friends with celiac disease, exercise the caution you need for yourself. Only you know if you can risk it. At least they are not trying to fake it for some extra cash.

    I do wish a company as big as Panera Bread would make more of an effort. Im sure its difficult given the way their restaurants are set up.

    Spain’s Food Culture: A Quick Summary

    The Spanish eat a predominantly Mediterranean diet, which has been known to provide multiple health benefits. While the regional foods may vary, Spain consumes large amounts of olive oil, fish, and fresh vegetables, along with grains such as potatoes and rice.     When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I went to my best friends place in Montreal for dinner. She is Italian, and her lovely family were used to feeding me pasta without issue. When I explained my disease to her parents, her father looked appalled. Solemnly and slowly he said, Jodi, this is a fate worse than death.

    Can You Trust Them Are They Actually Gf

    Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. If youre on a gluten-free diet, youll need to avoid any products that contain this protein. Wheat products like breads and pastas may be the first to come to mind, but gluten can sometimes pop up in other packaged foods too.

    When eating out, it can be difficult to eat gluten-free since sandwiches come on buns and salads often include breaded chicken and croutons. Even if you order your meal without these gluten-containing foods, cross contamination can happen in the kitchen.

    As you would at any other restaurant, be mindful of the possibility of cross contamination at fast-food joints. The biggest culprit is frying oil.

    Oil is naturally gluten-free, but restaurants may use the same batch of oil to fry a bunch of different foods. Once that oil has been used to fry gluten-containing foods , its def contaminated and so are the french fries or any other foods that take a dip in the oil afterward.

    Even with GF labels, the risk could still be high since the food prep is fast. If you have an allergy, dont be afraid to ask specifically how your food is cooked and mention that it must be gluten-free.

    Telling the staff might help limit cross contamination that can happen if folks touch gluten-containing foods while prepping your meal.
