Gluten Free Fast Food Options At Wendys

Wendys, of course, is a classic. I say out of the typical fast-food restaurants, Wendys has the best quality food.

Again Wendys is another one that doesnt have a dedicated allergy menu. I had to click on each individual item and read the ingredients. If I missed anything please share it in the comments!

Gluten Free Breakfast Options at Wendys

  • Breakfast Baconator without the bun
  • Seasoned Potatoes Only if cross-contamination is not a concern because they are cooked in the same oil as items that contain wheat

Gluten Free Burger Options at Wendys

Obviously all of their burgers use a bun that contains gluten. You can ask for a burger without a bun but if cross-contamination is an issue this still might be a risk for you.

Apart from the bun, Ill list which burger options have gluten free insides

  • Daves Single, Double, or Triple
  • Baconator or Son of Baconator
  • Big Bacon Classic, Double, or Triple
  • Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger
  • Jr. Cheeseburger
  • Double Stack
  • Jr. Hamburger

Chicken Sandwich Gluten Free Options at Wendys

Again, same as the burgers, the bun contains gluten. You can ask for these options without the bun but the chicken, in particular, does have a cross-contamination warning. But I believe this warning only applies to items that have cut chicken. If you ask them to NOT cut the chicken I believe it should be ok, but always ask the manager when in doubt.

Apart from the bun, Ill list the chicken options that have gluten free insides

Can You Trust Them Are They Actually Gf

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. If youre on a gluten-free diet, youll need to avoid any products that contain this protein. Wheat products like breads and pastas may be the first to come to mind, but gluten can sometimes pop up in other packaged foods too.

When eating out, it can be difficult to eat gluten-free since sandwiches come on buns and salads often include breaded chicken and croutons. Even if you order your meal without these gluten-containing foods, cross contamination can happen in the kitchen.

As you would at any other restaurant, be mindful of the possibility of cross contamination at fast-food joints. The biggest culprit is frying oil.

Oil is naturally gluten-free, but restaurants may use the same batch of oil to fry a bunch of different foods. Once that oil has been used to fry gluten-containing foods , its def contaminated and so are the french fries or any other foods that take a dip in the oil afterward.

Even with GF labels, the risk could still be high since the food prep is fast. If you have an allergy, dont be afraid to ask specifically how your food is cooked and mention that it must be gluten-free.

Telling the staff might help limit cross contamination that can happen if folks touch gluten-containing foods while prepping your meal.

Wondering what you can actually eat? After weighing all the gluten-free options, weve broken down whats available and whats potentially risky at Americas fave fast-food chains.

How To Find Out Information About A Fast Food Chains Allergen Statement And Information

When youre at a drive through or standing in line at a fast food restaurant, it can seem like this information isnt anywhere in sight.

You may need to ask about how the restaurant or chain handles allergens and specifically gluten. There may be a pamphlet on a bulletin board or a binder or folder that someone who works there can pull out from behind the counter for you.

What youre looking for is to understand how this specific fast food chain handles allergens and if anything is done to ensure that foods with gluten or other allergens arent subjected to cross contamination.

The big spoiler here is that most fast food restaurants will likely have some cross contamination and thats just the nature of visiting one of these places for a convenient meal.

You have to know what your bodys level of gluten sensitivity is and what your comfort level is knowing that gluten may be on the food that you order even if theres no gluten in that particular menu item.

If you cant find any allergen information in the fast food restaurant itself, you can look online. Most websites have some way of helping you to identify whether foods are made in shared fryers or what the ingredients in a menu item are.

If theres no obvious allergen statement online, you can assume that there is no question about cross contamination at this fast food chain, and that it for sure happens at this set of restaurants.

Gfp Worst Choice: Mcdonald’s

McDonald’s doesn’t maintain a gluten-free menu, stating instead that since ingredients and suppliers change frequently, people with concerns should check back at the company’s website. Nothing on this menu is considered safe at this time. Ingredient information can be found at www.mcdonalds.com

Concerns About Eating Out

When eating out at a restaurant, you need to be aware of the possibility of cross contamination. If a restaurant worker uses a pan to cook someone’s pasta dish and then uses that same pan to prepare your meal, there is a possibility your food may become contaminated with gluten if the pan was not cleaned properly. To limit your exposure to cross-contamination, tell your server when you order that you have an allergy to gluten to make sure the kitchen follows the appropriate protocol.

Popeyes Red Beans And Rice

Fast Food Menu Items You Didn

Only a few meals served at Popeyes are able to make the gluten-free cut. It is a relief that one of the few is its special red beans and rice combo. This isnt just safe if youve got gluten sensitivity, it is also very delicious. You can also try the Cajun rice if you want to try something different and a bit exotic.

Where Can You Find Gluten In Many Fast Food Restaurants

Depending on the fast food restaurant youre visiting, you may find gluten in a variety of places. Hamburger buns, the breading of crispy chicken sandwiches or chicken nuggets, some French fries, salad dressings, croutons on salad, and chili or soup options.

At some fast food restaurants, gluten can be found in dessert menu items as well. Cookie or candy bites in ice cream contain gluten, as well as ice cream cones.

Where gluten is found in the menu items will vary from restaurant to restaurant. Thats why its always a good idea to review menus from home, and see if you can find any allergen information before you get to the restaurant itself.

Being able to review nutritional information and allergen statements before visiting a fast food restaurant can be the difference between ordering something that you think is safe for your gluten-free diet and getting sick, and being knowledgeable about what specific menu items youll be able to eat without any worries of later reactions.

Casual Chain Restaurants Options

Gluten-free options in casual chain restaurants are increasing rapidly, but the chains have been slow to move to dedicated fryers for their fries. This means most fries you encounter in casual restaurants are not going to be gluten-free, even if they don’t include gluten ingredients.

Some restaurants serve fries coated with flour which makes them crispier, but unsafe if you can’t have gluten.

Red Robin is one of the nationwide chains with gluten-free options. Despite the fact that the chain has dedicated fryers for their steak fries, its website does warn of potential cross-contamination of gluten ingredients.

Others may offer gluten-free fries. Of course, it varies depending on location, demand, and the gluten-free awareness level of staff membersbut you’ll definitely need to ask.

Be aware that when you ask whether a restaurant’s fries are gluten-free, most will say “yes,” since the waitstaff and even the managers and chefs don’t always realize that frying them in a shared fryer means they’re no longer gluten-free. You’ll have to ask specifically whether the restaurant’s fries are prepared in a separate fryer.

Top 10 Fast Food Restaurants For Gluten

Its easy to assume that searching for gluten-free options at fast food restaurants would be more hassle than its worth.

After all, it seems most menus feature every item between two slices of bread, or every meat rolled or coated in flour. While this might be great in terms of convenience and flavor, it can be rough for those suffering from a gluten allergy.

Fortunately, we decided to take a closer look at just how far fast food chains have come in catering to people with gluten allergies. The goodies we found were even more than we bargained for.

With bread as part of its name, it can be easy to overlook Panera as a place to grab a rich and filling gluten-free bite. But fear not: Panera Bread actually has a long list of gluten-free items, including much more than plain salads.

Suggestions: Go Mediterranean and try the Greek salad. When were feeling extra-hungry, we pair it with a side of baked potato soup, followed by a coconut macaroon for dessert.

As long as you avoid flour tortillas almost everything at Chipotle is free of gluten. If youre highly gluten-sensitive Chipotle also recommends avoiding items containing corn, including corn tortillas and corn salsa, as they may have a small amount of gluten from potentially co-mingling with gluten-containing grains in the field.

Hash Brown Scramble Burrito

HEALTHY Fast Food? Gluten and dairy free? It was a STRUGGLE

With Chick-fil-A’s signature nuggets, hash browns, scrambled eggs, and cheese all rolled in a flour tortilla, the hash brown scramble burrito provides 700 calories, 40g fat, 12g saturated fat, 51g carbohydrates, 34g protein, and 1,750mg sodium.

Chicken can be an excellent lean source of protein at any meal. However, when it’s fried, the nutritional benefits can be overshadowed by added calories and fat. Grilled chicken is a healthier choice, so consider ordering the scramble burrito with a grilled filet.

When it comes to sandwich making your choice of bread can make a big difference to a meal’s calories and carb count. Instead of high-carb choices like biscuits and bagels, try making a breakfast sandwich at Chick-fil-A on an English muffin. With only 150 calories, it can be a sensible and satisfying vehicle for protein-packed eggs.
