Making Homemade Fresh Dog Food

Homemade Gluten Free Dog Food Recipe (Super Easy to Make)

There are 3 different ways to make homemade dog food. You can decide based on time and equipment which way you choose to cook the food. I guarantee, any of these methods is sure to please your BFF!

In an Insta Pot or pressure cooker:

*I have a Ninja Foodi All-In-One 6.5 Qt. If you make this in a smaller pressure cooker, you will need to halve the ingredients as they will not all fit*

  • roughly chop the carrots, potatoes, chicken and pork
  • place the ingredients in the pressure cooker
  • add 1-2 cups of water
  • seal the vent and set the timer for 15 minutes
  • allow to naturally release the pressure for 10 minutes and then manually release the remaining steam
  • stir in the eggs and the coconut oil

In a Slow cooker:

  • roughly chop the carrots, potatoes, chicken and pork
  • place the ingredients in the slow cooker
  • add 1-2 cups of water
  • set the timer for 3 hours on “HI” or 6 hours on “LOW”
  • once cooked, stir in the eggs and the coconut oil

In the oven:

*This is much more time consuming as you have to puree all the ingredients*

  • in a food processor, puree the chopped carrots and once pureed, place them in a large bowl.
  • Repeat the same procedure for the chopped potatoes
  • Place the potatoes in the same bowl as the carrots
  • Repeat the same procedure for the chicken and the pork
  • Once all the ingredients have been pureed, add the eggs and coconut oil to the mixing bowl
  • Stir to incorporate all the ingredients
  • Pour mixture into a 9 x 13 baking dish and bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes

What Is The Difference Between Grain Free And Gluten Free

Gluten is the protein that is found in specific types of grain, such as wheat, barley and rye. Gluten free food is, of course, free of these proteins. However, not all grains contain gluten. Therefore, gluten free dog food may or may not be grain free, while grain free dog food recipes will always be gluten free.

Are These Diets The Best Choice For Your Dog

Some proponents of the grain-free dog diets claim that grains are an unnatural source of nutrition for dogs and feel that dogs ancestors did not digest grains in the wild. While it may be true that dogs didnt sit down to eat a pasta dinner, they did hunt and consume animals that ate grains therefore indirectly ingesting grains themselves!

However, since our pets no longer live in the wild, dog foods are formulated with our dogs activity levels, weight, heart health, and overall wellbeing in mind.

While our dogs ancestors may have eaten only a small portion of grains in the wild, dogs have evolved over the years to digest different types of nutrition, including grain. There are several genes in dogs that have been modified over the years to allow them to digest grains and gluten. So, in terms of metabolism, it is not necessary to feed your dogs grain-free pet food.

Some proponents of grain-free dog food diets choose this form of nutrition for their dogs because they believe their dogs are allergic or intolerant to grains. Grain-free and gluten-free diets for dogs are becoming increasingly popular. While these diets are particularly helpful for PEOPLE suffering from celiac disease, gluten intolerances, or allergies to wheat, most dogs do NOT suffer from these same ailments.

How Much And When Should You Feed Your Dog

This will vary from dog to dog, but a general rule of thumb is for every 10 lbs your dog weighs they should be fed roughly 1 cup of prepared food.

For our 80 lb Hooch, that means 2 meals a day each containing 4 cups of food. It is important to note that, dogs with kidney problems often feel better when fed several small meals throughout the dayrather than just one or two large meals, so you may find that you need to adjust your feeding schedule as time goes on accordingly to keep your pup comfy!

  • PROTEIN – 56%

Now Let’s Break Down The Recipe For My Easy Homemade Dog Food Shall We

The recipe box below contains a printable version of my go-to recipe for homemade dog food, which consist of lean ground sirloin, brown rice, carrots, hard boiled eggs, parsley, and a few tablespoons of oil that is high in Omega’s. But sometimes, especially since social distancing, I’ve found that it is helpful to have a list of easy substitutes for when ingredients run low. Plug in or swap out any of the items below based on what foods your pup likes/needs and what you have on hand to create your pup’s ideal dog food flavor profile.

Meat || Lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground white or dark meat turkey, & ground pork are all great options. Just be sure to make sure that any meat you feed your animals is free of seasonings when purchasing! Dog’s living with a kidney disease diagnosis need meals that are lower in phosphorus – so for us a lean ground beef like ground sirloin is best the way to go!

Eggs || Eggs are one the top 5 allergens for dogs and the yolks are very high in phosphorus -which you want to limit in dog’s with kidney disease. But, eggs are also one of the highest quality forms of protein you can feed your pet! Ultimately, a hard boiled egg is Hooch’s favorite thing on the planet so, with our vets approval we opted to leave them in his food.

X Weight In Kg +70 = Daily Calorie Requirement For An Adult Dog

To convert your dog’s weight from pounds to kilograms, simply take your dogs’ weight and divide it by 2.2.

For example, my dog weighs 80 lbs. Therefore, his weight in kilograms is about 36.4 lbs.

So, for my 80 lb dog:

30 x 36.4 + 70 = 1162 calories a day

Here a cheat sheet for a couple of different weights:

  • 10 lbs – 30 x 4.5 + 70 = 205 calories a day
  • 20 lbs – 30 x 9.1 + 70 = 343calories a day
  • 30 lbs – 30 x 14 + 70 = 490 calories a day
  • 40 lbs – 30 x 18 + 70 = 610 calories a day
  • 60 lbs – 30 x 27 + 70 = 880 calories a day
