White Claw Hard Seltzer is an alcoholic seltzer water beverage manufactured by Mark Anthony Group. The beverage was introduced in 2016 and is sold in 12 various flavors.

The beverage is made from a blend of seltzer water, a gluten-free malted alcohol base, and fruit flavor. The alcohol base is composed of 51% sugar, smaller amounts of yeast and nutrients, water, and trace amounts of “malted gluten-free grains”. The exact recipe and methods are trade secrets.

Learn About White Claw Hard Seltzer

White Claw has swiftly established itself as the most popular harsh seltzer on the market. It was introduced in 2016, now accounts for more than half of the hard seltzer market share. Hard seltzer is expected to grow to a $30 million market by 2025, with White Claw continuing to be the top seller. Some even speculate that the recent stratospheric growth in popularity of hard seltzer has revived public interest in non-alcoholic seltzer.

If You Drink White Claw Every Night You Could Avoid A Hangover

Beer before liquor, never been sicker liquor before beer, you’re in the clear. Is there room for White Claw in that old adage? Dr. Niket Sonpal, a gastroenterologist and member of Touro College of Medicine’s faculty, told Bustle the clear beverage holds its own special place in the hangover realm. According to Sonpal, White Claw does not contain congeners, “a byproduct of the fermentation process … Found in dark liquors, dark beers and red wine” that “have long been thought to increase the intensity of a hangover.”

So if you drink White Claw every night, “the hangover … could be less intense for some people,” Sonpal said, “especially if they don’t generally experience stomachaches.” Sonpal also pointed to White Claw’s alcohol by volume five percent which he said is less than half of wine’s ABV 10 to 15 percent. He noted that if “you drink the same amount of wine as you would hard seltzer,” the hangover would be notably more severe. And if you’re sensitive to gluten, Sonpal said you may also feel better the day after drinking gluten-free White Claw.

Where To Buy White Claw

You can purchase White Claw at any store that also sells beer. That will depend on what state you are purchasing in. Some states allow beer and wine sales at grocery stores and pharmacies, while other states only allow alcohol sales through liquor stores. Since White Claw has a low ABV compared to other cocktail beverages, it is often sold alongside beer at the store. You can also buy White Claw through alcohol delivery services such as Drizly.

There have been instances in recent years when high consumer demand led to nationwide White Claw product shortages. Just ahead of summer 2019, now known by many as, White Claw Summer, sales of White Claw skyrocketed as the weather warmed up. As a result, the company rationed its remaining White Claw supply, using a strategy referred to as allocation. The company limited the supply of White Claw so it could continue offering White Claw in all of its markets, despite the overall shortage, according to a report by CNN.

White Claw will occasionally sell out in stores when demand is extra high but the company has said it was adding additional production facilities in 2020 to produce more White Claw and keep supplies stable.

If You Drink White Claw Every Night You Could Support Your Bone Health

There have been studies about beverages and their ability to cause brittle bones. But Melissa Majumdar, registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Shape that seltzer is not one of them.

“Unlike other carbonated drinks like soda, seltzer doesn’t contain caffeine or phosphorus, which both have had mixed results when it comes to the impact on bone density,” said Majumdar. So if you drink tons of sparkling water your bones shouldn’t have anything to worry about. In fact, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition compared women who drank a liter of carbonated water with women who drank a liter of non-carbonated mineral water for eight weeks and found that there was no difference in their bone health based on blood and urine tests after the eight-week period. However, it’s worth noting that this study didn’t include hard seltzer, so more studies need to be done before we can be confident that choosing to drink White Claw every night doesn’t have a negative impact on bone health.

White Claw Has Just About The Same Amount Of Alcohol As A Beer

Part of the allure of White Claw is the ability to consume alcohol in an easily-drinkable can. Some might even say it’s totally smashable. The same allure has existed for beer for years, partially due to the portability of the product, but White Claw is closely matching it now.

According to the Public Health Institute, a light beer’s alcohol content has historically been 4.2 percent alcohol by volume . For standard beer, you’ll typically see five percent, while a craft beer or stronger beer styles such as a porter or stout can range from six percent to 12 percent. But it’s not often you’re chugging a stout at the beach or on a boat on the lake. They’re just not that refreshing. And that’s where the beauty of White Claw comes in for most consumers.

With five percent ABV in a 12-ounce can, White Claw can pack just as much of a punch as most standard beers. According to The Spruce Eats, ABV labels explain exactly how much actual alcohol can be found in a beverage. For White Claw, that means its 12-ounce can, at five percent ABV, has .6 ounces of pure alcohol. That’s less than your average shot glass, but can add up quickly once you sip more than one and that happens pretty easily when you’re sipping something fruity and refreshing.

White Claw Goes Through A Fermentation Process

*drinks White Claw once*

In some ways, White Claw can be compared to beer because it goes through a similar fermentation process, but it’s not quite the same exact method. When brewing beer, a brewer utilizes malt, water, and yeast and typically adds hops for flavoring. During the brewing process, the malt feeds the yeast, giving it nutrients throughout the fermentation stage and ultimately producing the carbon dioxide to create alcohol.

According to Town & Country, White Claw still goes through fermentation, but the procedure is very specific. “The brand uses a proprietary brewing process that uses fermented sugar and a yeast strain that took a year to develop,” they said. By utilizing a very similar process as brewing beer, they are able to ferment sugar using their specialized yeast to break it down. Once fermentation of the sugar occurs, and alcohol develops, the carbonation can be added to finish off that refreshing can of White Claw.

Are White Claws Keto

White Claw hard seltzers are a great choice for a keto-friendly alcoholic beverage. White Claws have only 2 grams of carbohydrates per serving, so it wouldnt have a huge impact on your overall carb intake on a keto diet. To stay in ketosis, you want to limit your carbohydrate intake to 50 grams or less per day. So, a White Claw or two wont set you back too far.

If youre looking for other low-carbohydrate alcoholic options, consider vodka or gin mixed with sparkling water and a splash of lime juice. These drinks are also relatively low in calories, which is another plus if youre trying to watch your weight on a keto diet.

As always, moderate your alcohol consumption to stay within healthy levels. Too much alcohol can lead to weight gain, disrupt sleep, and damage your liver. So, even if White Claw is technically keto-friendly, enjoy it in moderation.

Whether or not a certain alcoholic drink is healthy is a layered question. While they may be lower in calories and carbs compared with some mixed drinks and beers, says Syn, its important to make sure that consumption is moderate, as consuming large quantities of alcohol is not a healthy choice regardless of the source of the alcohol.

Also consider that hard seltzer is empty calories that dont do anything for your health. There are no real nutritional benefits from consumption of hard seltzer, as they are primarily just empty calories, says Syn. A serving of these drinks fits into the category of fun foods. If You Drink White Claw Every Night You Could Potentially Find Yourself Addicted To It

If you drink White Claw every night, can you become addicted? Some experts say yes. When a White Claw shortage was widely reported in 2019, causing panic among consumers as the manufacturer worked overtime to keep up with demand, White Claw’s senior vice president of marketing Sanjiv Gajiwala told Agence France-Presse that the surging popularity of the drink was born out of millennials wanting more. “Millennials are consumers that grew up on 10 different flavors of Gatorade and cuisines from around the world. When they come to the legal drinking age, they are looking for more,” Gajiwala stated.

But others worried about the beverage’s potential for alcohol addiction, voicing concerns about the body becoming addicted to the drink if it is consumed every day. “The alcohol is the drug. Everything else is just the way it’s delivered,” Aaron White of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism told AFP.

Happy that consumers were counting calories, White still worried that people may be inadvertently consuming more alcohol when drinking White Claw because “fruity seltzers don’t taste like traditional booze.”
