Health Benefits Of Almonds

Homemade Gluten Free Breadcrumbs

I see almonds used in so many different ways! This is with good reason, too. Theyre a total nutritional powerhouse! They are low in carbohydrates, high in protein, and they provide iron and calcium. They also add fiber, healthy fats, vitamin E and magnesium into your diet. Sign me up! I love that I get to use both raw almonds and almond flour in this Gluten-Free Panko Breadcrumb recipe.

Gluten Free Panko Bread Crumbs

Panko bread crumbs are bread crumbs made with white bread with no crust and no end pieces.

If you need to make gluten free panko bread crumbs simply use a white gluten free bread and cut off the crust and ends. Save those ends and the crust in your freezer for croutons or regular gluten free bread crumbs.

Italian Gluten Free Bread Crumbs

To make Italian seasoning gluten free bread crumbs add 1 cup of bread crumbs in a bowl with ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon parsley, ½ teaspoon of oregano.

You can use Italian gluten free bread crumbs to make breaded chicken, breaded pork chops, or anything that calls for bread crumbs.

Simple measure out how much you need and store the leftovers in the freezer. When you are ready to use them, bring them to room temperature.

My bread clumped in the food processor

If the bread cubes clumped in the food processor instead of grinding down, there was too much moisture in the bread. You can spread the bread crumbs out onto a baking sheet, bake until they are dry, cool them, and then reprocess them in the food processor.

What Equipment Do I Need To Make Bread Crumbs

The key equipment for making bread crumbs is either a food processor or a blender-grinder. Technically, you can make bread crumbs by completely drying out the bread, then crushing in a sealed airtight bag with a rolling pin But I recommend the blender method, both for simplicity and consistency. For larger amounts, I use a Vitamix A2300i However my much simpler grab and blend PROMiXX MiiXR X7smoothie blender is absolutely brilliant. Quite possibly the best bit of blending/griding kit Ive ever owned.

Other than a blender, if youre making dried gluten free bread crumbs, youll also need an oven and a baking tray.

  • Oats If you, or someone youre feeding, needs to eat gluten free, use only certified gluten free oats. Others are usually cross-contaminated by wheat from the fields and processing plants. If you dont happen to have quick oats on hand, regular GF oats will also work well.

You might be wondering whats the difference between panko and regular breadcrumbs or gluten-free breadcrumbs.

Panko is lighter and crispier, and if youre following a gluten-free diet, the quickest, easiest, and closest to the real thing would be using the Rice Chex cereal method.

Breadcrumbs are made using bread thats been toasted and processed into a fine meal. It can be used in the same way as panko, as a breading or topping. It can be used for frying foods or baking a crispy crust in a dish.

Ground Chia Or Flax Seeds: Mostly As Binders

Chia seeds arent great for breading the outsides of foods, but theyre excellent substitutes for breadcrumbs as a thickener in foods like meatballs. They do the same thing absorb and hold a ton of water so they have basically same thickening effect. Theyre also used a lot as a vegan egg substitute in meatballs, so there are tons of recipes featuring them. You can buy the ground ones or grind them yourself in a food processor.

Ground flax can work either as a flour for breading the outside of a food or as a thickener/binder to stir into soups, stews, and meatballs. To get the breadcrumb effect, use ground flax, not whole flaxseeds.

What Kind Of Gluten Free Bread Is Best To Use

Any gluten free bread will work well to make bread crumbs, but I advise using any gluten free bread without a lot of seeds or flavors. Some of my favorites are Canyon Bakehouse, Franz Gluten Free, Trader Joe’s brand, and 3 Bakers brands. I would also avoid cinnamon raising or anything sweetened.

Step 2: Tear up the bread and add to a food processor. Add optional seasonings or leave plain.

Step 3: Put into a food processor and pulse. The longer you pulse, the finer your crumbs will be. If you want more of a panko style, pulse in short bursts and check the size often.

Making Breadcrumbs Without A Food Processor

Enjoy homemade bread crumbs in no time by using alternative kitchen equipment. Although using a food processor is the most efficient way, there are many different options!

For fresh or stale cubed bread, use a blender, spice grinder, or coffee grinder to make your bread crumbs. Process and pulse in smaller amounts and then transfer to a baking sheet.

Wipe down the inside of the spice grinder or coffee grinder thoroughly first. Otherwise, your bread crumbs may end up tasting a little more like oregano and coffee than you hoped.

If you are using dry, toasted bread to make breadcrumbs, you have a few more options most of which you probably have on hand in your kitchen. Ideally, the bread would sit out for a couple of days and then be toasted before using one of these methods.

    • Rolling pin with bread placed inside ziplock bag.
    • Cheese box grater
    • Mallet with bread placed inside ziplock bag.
    • Heavy pot with bread placed inside ziplock bag.
