Best Gluten-Free Hamburger Buns: Incredibly Soft & Chewy Burger Buns Recipe | How To Cuisine

I like to do meal planning. So that means I have my meal ingredients on my grocery list before I go, so I can everything I need once I get home and get cooking. Nothing makes me mad, like when I cannot find something I need at the grocery store. Sometimes I am quick on my feet to find an alternative and sometimes I feel like I need to have a tantrum in the grocery aisle.

What I have learned from these experiences, is that sometimes I just need to order some products online, so I can have a stock of them always available to me. I find it easier to do meal planning because I already have them frozen in my freezer, so I can get some meal ideas just with looking at what I have.

How To Make Gluten Free Hamburger Buns:

Step 1: In a small bowl, add one tablespoon of sugar, warm water , and the active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it is frothy.

Step 2: Attach either a dough hook or paddle attachment to the stand mixer. Preheat your oven to 200º F so that your buns have a warm place to rise. It will heat quickly then turn off the oven.

Step 3: Add the wet mixture, including the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and the flour blend, to a standing mixer bowl.

Mix the ingredients on low speed, gradually increasing to medium speed until the wet ingredients and dry ingredients are mixed, and your hamburger bun dough is formed. You can also mix the dough by hand in a large mixing bowl.

NOTE! If you are using Cup4Cup, you will most likely need more of the flour blend. This blend needs more flour than the blend I tested, Authentic Foods Steve’s GF Bread Blend. Add flour until your dough is wet but workable.

HINT: You will only get one good rise so you need to shape your dough before the dough rises!

Step 4: Move your dough to a silicone mat or parchment paper. Use wet hands to shape the dough into hamburger buns. Make them any size you like, they will be a perfect size.

Allow 2 inches between each so that they do not rise into each other. (If you are using the Authentic Foods Steve’s GF Bread Blend, you are going to love how easy it is to work the dough into shaped rolls!

Step 5:

Allow the dough to rise for 45 minutes, or until the hamburger buns have doubled in size.

What Is This Mystery Ingredient

Some of my readers have asked if they can substitute the xanthan gum in my bread flour blend with psyllium husks. I told them I honestly didnt know as I had never worked with psyllium husk before.

So I quickly got to work researching anything I could about this mystery ingredient and how it works in gluten free baking. I decided to order some online to have on hand when I was ready to start experimenting.

Once I received my shipment, I began tinkering around with adding it to some of my recipes. I found out a few things in the process. It works well with enriched breads . And it makes those enriched breads really, really soft and extensible. Much more so than xanthan gum alone.

Ive tried it with my artisan bread, though, and I personally didnt like the results. Artisan bread is considered a lean bread with little to no additional fats or sugars. But when I added it to my Hawaiian roll dough, as Sheldon would say, BAZINGA!!!! A new bread was formed and lemme tell ya, its outstanding!!

Hearty Sprouted Grains Artisan Bread

Can I Use Any Gf Free Flour To Make This Gluten Free Burger Bread

No, this gluten free burger bun recipe won’t work if you just grab a random gluten free flour from your pantry.

Making these buns with almond flour or coconut flour, for example, just won’t produce the right taste or consistency unless you’re a fan of dense, crumbly, and oddly flavored hamburger buns?

Storing Gluten Free Burger Buns

You can keep your gf buns at room temperature on the kitchen counter for about three days. Just keep them in an airtight container or zip-top bag so that they don’t dry out.

If you’re making a big batch of gluten free hamburger buns to store for later, give them time to cool completely, slice them, and then wrap them individually. For extra protection from freezer burn, throw a few wrapped buns into a zip-top bag, and then pop them in the freezer.

Burger buns stay good on ice for about two months. To defrost, remove what you need and leave them in the refrigerator overnight. You can also drop them into a toaster oven while frozen, on the light setting.

The texture of the bread will change a bit from being frozen, but you can improve it by toasting the bread with a little bit of butter in a skillet. You can also wrap a bun in a damp paper towel and microwave for 20 seconds.

How To Make Gluten Free Hamburger Buns

I included the photos above to show the step-by-step process youll follow to make gluten free hamburger buns. Notice the texture of the dough, it should be too sticky to work with your hands which is why youll use water or oil to coat your work surface when shaping.

I recently invested in a hamburger bun pan which has worked so well! I love that it gives the buns a perfect rise and makes them exactly the right shape and size. If you dont want to get a pan, feel free to just shape them and bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

This recipe is so easy, because youll add your dry ingredients, then wet ingredients to the bowl and only mix once.

Then, youll coat your working surface and hands in oil or water and divide the dough into 6 equal portions.

Shape each dough portion into a ball and then press lightly to flatten into a disc that is 1/2-3/4 tall and place in your hamburger pan or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Cover it loosely with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes until double in size, then bake!

Can I make this recipe dairy free?

Yes! One reader substituted almond flour for the parmesan and said it turned out great.

2 eggs

4 tablespoons of olive oil

2 egg yolks

Testing If Your Yeast Is Active

It’s very important with any bread recipe that you activate the yeast before using it.

To do this, all of my gluten free bread-based recipes start by mixing the yeast with warm milk and sugar.

I’d strongly recommend using a food thermometer like this one to ensure the water or milk is around 40’C – skin temperature.

Too hot and it will kill the yeast, which means your bake will not rise.

When left in a warm spot for 5-10 minutes, the yeast should form a frothy top a bit like the head on beer.

This means your yeast is active and you’re good to go!

If your yeast doesn’t froth up after 10 minutes, it’s likely it is dead and you’ll need to discard it and start again.

Sometimes yeast can go out of date so this could be a reason for it not frothing.

You also need to make sure the water is warm – not hot.

When you pop your finger in it, it should be a warm, comfortable temperature, around the same as your skin.

Can I Make Gluten

You can definitely shape this hamburger bun recipe into vegan gluten free hot dog buns . To do this, youll divide the dough into 8 sections instead of 6.

Shape each dough piece into a cylinder, and place onto two baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Then continue on with proofing them and baking them as you would the vegan gluten free buns.

Gluten Free Burger Buns (Quick, Easy)

First, cut the dough in half with a bench scraper to make both hamburger and hot dog buns. Put aside one half of the dough while you shape the other half.

Portion out the dough into about 3-ounce pieces. I use my scale to measure each so theyll all be roughly the same size. Roll them into balls . Place them about 2 inches apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Take your hand and press down on them to flatten them to about 1/2-inch thick. This just ensures that they all rise up and not out. Cover the rolls while you work on shaping the hot dog buns.

Gluten Free Egg Free Hamburger Buns

There is one egg white in the bread dough, which helps them rise.

You can try replacing it with aquafaba , but I’m afraid I haven’t heard about great results from using that in baking.
