Hi Fishermans Wharf $40

I stayed at HI Fishermans Wharf on my most recent trip to San Francisco and wow, it was perfect for a gluten free traveler. Keep in mind it is a hostel, but we had a private room and it is a calm, quiet place on National Park land.

There is a massive kitchen on site which is ideal for celiacs. It was also easy walking distance to gluten free restaurants including Asian Box, Greens, Cafe de Casa, In-N-Out, and the ferry to/from Sausalito. Also the slightly longer 45 minute walk to Mariposa Bakery along the water is stunning.

Oh, and for anyone else with a car there is FREE parking. Thats unheard of in San Francisco.

Review Of Mariposa Baking Co

711 of 58 reviews

We got a variety of cakes, cookies and bread, all of highest quality and taste. Highly recommended for all with celiac disease.

My wife has a gluten intolerance and when we travel I always feel that she misses out on so many foods that she likes. We researched Mariposa before heading to San Fransisco and without doubt this was the best place found yet. Breads, pastries, biscuits, cookies, and freshly made sandwiches made in GF baguettes. Not just macaroons and the usual paltry suspects. We visited daily and my wife was eating things she hadnt had the chance to eat for years. Freshly stocked daily. This places is a real gem.

Fabulous bakery items and healthy snacks/lunch food. A bit pricey but worth it. This place is definitely for those who are gluten free but many items are also dairy and soy free. I had the vegetarian empanada and it was wonderfully crispy on the outside with a delicious, not overly spicy potato filling. I also got a cream filled chocolate cupcake that was reminiscent of my pre-allergic Hostess cupcakes days. The bakery is one of many food stalls in the Ferry building: a not-to-miss attraction.

Pica Pica is a 100% gluten free restaurant in San Francisco, and serves up fantastic Venezuelan food like arepas and cachapas filled with a variety of delicious meat and meatless combinations.

It was actually the first 100% gluten free meal I ever had while I was on a trip to SF with my older brother years ago. He saw it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and we went when I was visiting the Bay Area.

It changed my life. Now, Im obsessed with arepas and I go to Pica Pica at least once a month. I recommend the Crispy Chicken Cachapa, the Shredded Beef Pabellon Arepa, and the Nachos Pica Pica.

Seeking Sweet Aromas At Mariposa Baking Company

How to Make the Best Scottish Shortbread (recipe from Tartine Bakery in San Francisco)

As someone who’s had food sensitivities for my entire adult life , I know what I’m looking for in a satisfying dessert. I prioritize taste over looks, because as someone who can’t eat so many things, exceptional taste can cover a multitude of sins.

But besides the desserts, I also wanted to find special experiences, like the sweet aroma of waffle cones in an ice cream shop, or the thrill of selecting a beautiful pastry from a glass case. Most importantly, I also hoped to find places that I could share with friends, regardless of their dietary preferences.

My first stop, , was promising on all fronts. Located in the bustling Ferry Building just past the Heath Ceramics outpost, its glass cases of beautiful pastries draw passing tourists and locals alike. Even though everything they sell is gluten-free, it all looks delicious.

Of all the places I visited, Mariposa was best at labeling its foods: every item had a sticker noting common allergens, and the website lists all of the ingredients for every item, so you can check out the menu on your phone before buying. The staff were helpful and showed me which desserts were vegan: two standard a la carte items, plus a pack of raspberry bars and a tray of apple crumble.

The Happy Vegan is located on Bayshore Boulevard and its owner, Tobias Patella, said he hopes to accommodate dine-in customers soon at his shop.

Gluten Free Restaurants In Oakland California

Just across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, youll find lovely Oakland, California, which has a couple of solid gluten free restaurant options, and is worth the trip if you have an extra day .

Buck Wild Brewing: For years, Ive been lamenting the fact that there are no gluten free breweries in the Bay Area. And finally, someone has answered the call! Buck Wild Brewing makes 100% gluten free beer with naturally gluten free ingredients , and they serve food made by Kitava! Its another story of someone who went gluten free, said why are there so few gluten free beers that are actually good, and created their own. They have a great taproom in Jack London Square, where you can try a flight of their beers, grab some cans to go, and enjoy some 100% gluten free food on their patio on a warm Oakland day.

: While the location at the Ferry Building in SF is great, this is where the gluten free bakery started, and continues to be their baking facility. Youll find a larger selection of 100% gluten free baked goods here. Its a great place to stop for lunch if youre over in Oakland.

C Casa: A dedicated gluten free Mexican fast-casual restaurant in Emeryville, which is where I worked for five years. Everything is gluten free. You might be scared off by the prices for a taco, but theyre MASSIVE. You wont need more than two per person.

Closed in 2020, unfortunately.

Table Three Ten Lexington Ky

Nouveau-German Chocolate CakeStella Parks, pastry chef of Table Three Ten, loves the flavor of German chocolate cake, but always considered the classic presentationwith its goopy-lumpy coconut-caramel-pecan frostingkind of homely. To disguise the components, Parks bakes a chocolate cake with shredded pecans and coconut in the batter, and covers the outside with light caramel buttercream, a pure caramel drizzle and an ethereal pile of coconut flakes. Parks, who loves alternative flours for their variety of textures and flavors, swaps wheat flour for nutty-sweet kinako made from roasted soybeans.

Crown & Crumpet Tea Salon

About Young Kobras

Crown & Crumpet Tea Salon is my favorite underrated place for celiacs to eat in San Francisco. They serve the most fantastic three-tiered afternoon tea in a very cute, quirky environment.

Quick story time about Crown & Crumpet. Have you ever had a meal that was just so perfect, you keep thinking about it years later?

I first ate at Crown & Crumpet in 2011 and absolutely fell in love. So in love that I went on to move to England and date a Brit for close to 10 years. The obsession all started with this afternoon tea .

In any case, having celiac one of my greatest disappointments was never being able to eat Crown & Crumpet again. Then, on my most recent trip to San Francisco I reached out to them and discovered they offer an entirely gluten free afternoon tea !

Theyve had to downsize their location , but its been a very hard couple years for the hospitality industry so I understand. Dan and I had a great meal here and I highly recommend it. They deserve all our support!

Where To Drink As A Celiac In San Francisco

  • Upcider : 20+ ciders on tap, and even more bottles and cans. Beautiful space. Food is not gluten free.
  • Anina / Brass Tacks : Right next door to each other with the same owners. Fantastic cocktails in either a speakeasy setting, or a bright airy patio.
  • Monks Kettle : Mostly a beer bar, but they have a robust, rotating collection of ciders and wines both on tap and in bottles/cans.
  • ABV : Great cocktails right near Pica Pica.
  • El Techo de Lolinda : Rooftop margaritas? Count me in.
  • Fig & Thistle : Cute wine bar tucked away in an alley in Hayes Valley.

Blueberry-Violet VacherinThis dessert is pure nostalgia for me, says pastry chef Arnaud Chavigny. I recalled the time I spent at summer camp in the French Alps and how we picked blueberries to eat with farm-made yogurt, buttermilk pancakes and scones. For his deconstructed vacherin , Chavigny combines zingy lime juice-marinated blueberries with crisp mini meringues. He arranges them around a cube of two swirled-together sorbetsyogurt and violet made with Rothman & Winter crème de violette, an Austrian liqueur made by macerating two types of violet flowers in brandy.

San Francisco Sourdough Bread Series: Day 10 – What makes San Francisco Sourdough Bread special?

I am so excited for you to experience the San Francisco gluten free scene. Let me give you some quick background on this gluten free guide before we get started, though.

First of all, I am a careful celiac and I only eat at places that understand cross contact. If youre in the same boat, youll love my gluten free guides!

In San Francisco, there are a LOT of 100% gluten free places to support, but I also feel comfortable eating at certain shared restaurants .

Second, this is not a completely exhaustive guide to gluten free San Francisco. That would be impossible! There are so many restaurants that cater to celiacs in this city, and there are always new ones popping up. However, over the years Ive eaten at way more restaurants than you could visit in an average trip to San Francisco. In this gluten free guide, youll have plenty of restaurants and bakeries to choose from without being overwhelmed.

Delice au ChocolatOne of pastry chef Milton Abels favorite recipes is a creamy banana crème fraîche sherbet, and here he serves it as part of a wonderful multitextural gluten-free dessert. He makes a rich chocolate mousse with Valrhona Manjari chocolate, a single-origin bar with a nice acidity. Alongside is pain dépices, a spiced French cake thats typically baked with rye flour and flavored with anise. Abel swaps out anise for spicy ginger powder and uses Cup4Cup gluten-free flour blend, the versatile mix of cornstarch, rice flour, milk powder, tapioca, potato starch and xanthan gum developed in 2010 by the French Laundrys Lena Kwak and now marketed by chef Thomas Keller.

Gluten Free Restaurants In Marin County California

Copita : First of all, they catered our wedding, which is probably the only endorsement you need. Great 100% gluten free Mexican food in Sausalito in an unbeatable location. I highly recommend starting with a walk from SF across the Golden Gate Bridge and down to Sausalito, and a nice dinner here .

Flour Craft Bakery : This 100% gluten free bakery has two locations in Marin. One in Mill Valley, about 20 minutes north of San Francisco, super close to some of the best hiking in California on Mt. Tamalpais and Tennessee Valley and the Marin Headlands, and one in the cute town of San Anselmo a little further north. Theyre one of my favorite gluten free bakeries in the country.

They make a variety of gluten free baked goods, including cookies, scones, muffins, and donuts, but the star of the show is their breads. Although I will say that their scones are among the best Ive ever had.

The walnut sourdough and the brioche are outstanding, and are well worth the trip to Marin. I buy it in bulk and send it around the country to people who have had it while visiting me in San Francisco. Its that good.

Mas Masa : Mexican Restaurant in Fairfax, California with a mostly gluten free menu. Perfect lunch or dinner after a lovely Marin hike! CHIPS ARE NOT SAFE FOR CELIACS DUE TO POTENTIAL FOR CROSS-CONTAMINATION. Everything else is safe. Get the pozole if they have it, and the tacos al pastor!
