Barbara’s Organic Brown Rice Crisps

Gluten Free Rice Krispies Treats

This brand, crafted from whole grain, non-GMO brown rice, is sweetened with organic fruit juice instead of sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. It may not work well for the most sensitive, however. It’s manufactured in a that also processes wheat, soy, tree nuts, and peanuts, and risking some exposure to those allergens. That said, the cereal is tested to make sure it contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten.

One Degree Organic Foods Gf Sprouted Brown Rice Crisp Cereal

I honestly had never heard of the One Degree brand before I started my search for gluten free rice crispy cereal varieties. The box is smaller than most at 8 ounces since most others are 10 ounces, a relatively universal price means that this variety is more expensive by 25%.

I really like these little puffy grains, though. Theyre unlike the Kelloggs Rice Krispies variety, which is wrinkled like a raisin. Thats neither good nor bad. Its just a matter of personal preference.

Theyre nice and snappy, stay crisp in milk, are only very lightly sweet, and the grains are sprouted which some say is better for your gut. They are great in Rice Krispy Treats , too.

Here are the other details about One Degree:

  • Size of package: 8 ounces
  • Price you should expect to pay: About $4.25
  • Availability: Okay. I purchased this cereal at Vitacost.com, and have seen it on Target.com. Its sold on amazon.com, but the prices are terrible
  • Other common allergens: none
  • Ingredients: organic sprouted whole grain brown rice, organic coconut sugar, unrefined salt, tocopherols

My Favorite Traditional Rice Crispy Treat Recipe

I love making Rice Krispy Treats with homemade marshmallows. Theyre always less sweet than those made in a typical way, with melted butter, melted marshmallows and/or marshmallow creme, and I find that they stay fresh longer.

But sometimes, you just need to whip them up in mere seconds. Below is my favorite traditional way to make gluten free rice krispy treats. I like to mix butter with marshmallow creme, since its easier to melt than whole marshmallows.

Have you ever tried to make these treats with marshmallows that arent incredibly fresh? It does not go well. But marshmallow creme/fluff is always fresh enough for these treats. I also like to add a few more miniature marshmallows at the last minute, since they keep everything just gooey enough. Using marshmallow creme rather than marshmallows also makes for treats that are still soft the next day.

If you dont have fresh mini marshmallows, just leave them out. Or add chocolate chips!

Easy Rice Crispy Treats Without Marshmallows

Product Review: Gluten Free Rice Krispies and Rice ...

Since I know there are so many people who are also avoiding refined sugar but still want healthy treats, these rice crispy treats are literally perfect.

They’re made without any marshmallows!

Are you vegan? If so, you can swap the honey with brown rice syrup. I don’t think maple syrup or agave will work because of the consistency, but brown rice should do the trick!

Golden Rule To Making Gluten Free Rice Krispie Treats

Golden rule that will allow you to make huge batches to small individual batches. Whatever the amount of butter you use just use equal amounts of marshmallows and rice cereal.

4 Tablespoons Butter, 4 Cups Marshmallows, 4 Cups Rice Cereal

8 Tablespoons Butter, 8 Cups Marshmallows, 8 Cups Rice Cereal

You get me? When Im making this myself and I know Im going to be the only one eating it Ill make it with the 2 ratio. I actually love these for a travel treat. They store perfectly in saran wrap.

Why Rice Krispies Are Not Gluten

Rice Krispies cereal has a pretty short ingredient list and, as the name reveals, is mostly made of rice. And while rice is gluten-free, malt flavor, another key ingredient, is not. Malt is a barley-derived sweetening agent, which means it contains gluten, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

In some cases, malt can be made from corn products, but in standard practice, malt comes from barley, so consider it a red flag if you’re avoiding gluten, says Shena Jaramillo, RD.

If you’re uncertain whether a product contains gluten, take a closer peek at the packaging. Where all processed foods are concerned, cereal included, look for either a Certified Gluten-Free seal or a “gluten-free” label on the product, Jaramillo says.

The Gluten-Free Certification Organization independently verifies that the products you’re consuming are free of gluten-containing ingredients. If your cereal has the group’s stamp of approval the Certified Gluten-Free seal you’re good to go.

If a product doesn’t bear the seal but is labeled “gluten-free”and is regulated by the FDA and most packaged foods are it’s generally safe to dig in, according to the GFCO.

Regardless of labels, it never hurts to double-check ingredients lists for any wheat-, rye- or barley-derived ingredients, Jaramillo says.

When Crisp Rice Cereal Isnt Just Rice

Gluten Free Rice Krispie Squares

Since rice is naturally gluten free, you might wonder, are Rice Krispies are gluten free ? Conventional Kelloggs Rice Krispies are made with malt syrup, derived from barley, which is a gluten-containing grain. They are most definitely not gluten free.

In 2011, though, Kelloggs introduced a gluten free variety of their famous snap, crackle and pop Rice Krispies that was sold in conventional grocery stores all over the U.S. However, they were discontinued in the U.S. just a few years later. The gluten free variety is, however, still available in Canada.

When they were first available in the U.S., my gluten free son had only had Erewhon brand crisp rice cereal, and theyre great. Ive used them for baking for years.

But I had a fondness for Kelloggs brand, as I grew up eating them, so I bought a box. They were, well, pretty much the same as I rememberand tasted very similar to 3 of the 5 brands below.

Fortunately, now there are tons of brands of gluten free crisp rice cereals available for purchase. Some are a little more precious than others and are a bit more expensive.

Cereal is pretty expensive, in general, though . Ive always found cereal to be a poor investment for the mornings nutrition.

But its fast and always ready when you are. As long as its low in sugar and high in whole grains, Im fine with it for my kids.

Are Kelloggs Rice Krispies Treats Gluten Free

Today were going to be taking a look at whether Kelloggs Rice Krispies Treats are gluten-free or not. Well also be taking a look at alternative gluten-free rice krispy-style treats. Kelloggs Rice Krispies Treats are an extremely popular lunchtime favorite. Theyre gooey rice and marshmallow goodness. Perfect to start off your day or as a snack and definitely a household name.

Are Rice Crispy Treats Gluten

Whether these tasty snacks are gluten-free or not is a very tricky question to answer. Whilst the SmartLabel of allergens and ingredients on the Kelloggs website states that the only allergens are milk and soya the list of ingredients makes me feel a little uneasy about the allergens they have disclosed.

The ingredients listed are as follows:

Toasted rice cereal , folic acid), corn syrup, fructose, vegetable oil, sugar, corn syrup solids, contains 2% or less vegetable glycerin, dextrose, gelatin, natural and artificial flavors , salt, DATEM, acetylated monoglycerides, soy lecithin, BHT for freshness.

Whilst those ingredients may appear to be gluten-free, the ingredient, malt flavor, listed above makes alarm bells ring in my mind. Malt flavoring is often derived from barley, which is, of course, a no-go for gluten-intolerant individuals.

What I find most interesting is that the UK equivalent of Rice Krispies Treats, Squares have a clear label that they are not suitable for gluten-intolerant individuals. The label clearly states that barley is an ingredient and therefore is not gluten-free. Same brand, same product just a different name. Yet the labeling is different seems odd, doesnt it?

Rice Crispy cereal itself also has the same issue. The label states the only allergens are milk and soya but malt flavoring is listed as an ingredient. Therefore, to me this product is not suitable for anyone that lives with celiac disease or can not tolerate gluten.

Gluten Free Rice Crispy Treats

These gluten free rice crispy treats are so yummy with pockets of half-melted marshmallow tucked into crispy, crunchy rice cereal. I dare you to stop at just one!

Bring me back to my childhood! I grew up in the 70s and 80s when my mom used to make everything from scratch, basically because there were no boxed little treats like this. If you wanted crispy treats, you HAD to make them yourself. Of course back then there were also no gluten free crispy treats, but today thats all changed. Now we can make our OWN and they will be bigger and better than any youve ever had, gluten free or otherwise.

I love recipes where there are only a few simple ingredients mixed together to create such a nostalgic treat from my childhood. Dont get me wrong. I absolutely love to bake my heart out, roll out dough, make all kinds of complicated things and such, but sometimes simplicity is just what we need in our crazy lives, right?

Back To Nature Gf Sprout & Shine Cereal

This brand of cereal is probably the most like Kelloggs, as the grains are wrinkly and theyre made with a pretty typical sugar. The package says that theyre batch-cooked, but I honestly dont know why I should care about that.

The brown rice grains are sprouted, or allowed to germinate before cooking. Thats neither here nor there for me. I just know that these little crispy rice grains taste good in milk, and are reliably gluten free. The price is a bit higher than some of the others, at least from what Ive seen, though.

Here are the other details about Back To Nature:

    • Size of package: 10 ounces
    • Price you should expect to pay: $5.25.
    • Availability: Good. I purchased this cereal at Vitacost.com, and have seen it at plenty of large grocery stores and a few local natural food stores.
    • Other common allergens: none
    • Ingredients: sprouted whole grain brown rice, dried cane syrup, sea salt

    Is It Worth The Risk

If you feel the risk is worth taking, that choice is entirely yours. But I certainly wont be trying them any time soon. Especially as Im from the UK and the barley is clearly marked.

What I find frustrating is that it should be really simple to make a product like Rice Krispies gluten-free especially because the main ingredients are essentially sugar and rice! Even more frustratingly, in 2011 Rice Krispies launched a gluten-free cereal, but according to their website the sales were disappointing, and manufacturing constraints were an issue. The product was discontinued. Its a shame because I feel as though it would certainly be more popular now.

    Step By Step Instructions

Making GLUTEN FREE Rice Krispie Treats

First, line a baking dish with foil and spray with cooking spray. This makes slicing the treats easier once they are set, just lift the foil out of the pan and cut into squares with a sharp knife.

After you grease and line the baking dish, complete the recipe as follows:

  • Brown the butter: Melt the butter in a pot over low heat, then start to whisk constantly until it starts to brown.
  • Add marshmallows: Next, add all but 1-2 cups of the mini marshmallows to the pot.
  • Melt, then add vanilla and salt: Continue to cook on low, stirring until everything is melted together. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.
  • Add cereal: Pour in the cereal and mix a few times just until combined.
  • More marshmallows: Then, add in the rest of the mini marshmallows.
  • Mix: Stir well until all of the cereal is coated and the last of the marshmallows start to melt.

What Is The Best Way To Store Rice Krispies Treats

I always store them in an air-tight container at room temperature for 2-3 days before they start to get stale. If you need them to last a little longer, you can refrigerate them.

If you refrigerate them, its best to allow them to come to room-temperate. If you let them sit on the counter for 30 minutes, that should do the trick .

Arent Rice Crispy Treats Already Gluten Free

Youd think so, but youd be WRONG!! When I was first diagnosed with Celiac I didnt realize, like most of you probably didnt either, that gluten is in nearly Evvvvverything! Especially things you wouldnt think itd be in . Most cereals are made with malt, or barley malt, which is made fromyou guessed itbarley. And we cant have barley.

After that initial shock of not being able to eat things like RICE cereal, I began to find alternatives. Like tamari for soy sauce. And Aldis store brand rice crispies for Kelloggs Rice Krispies, which are naturally gluten free .
