Is Vodka Made from Wheat Gluten Free? Gluten free liquor test

I stumbled upon this recipe thanks to and Epicurious! I have to admit that one of my favorite ways to laze away a sunny summer day is poolside, and what better way to enjoy the day then to add a tasty and refreshing cocktail like this one. This Pineapple Sangria uses a touch of rum and coconut water which helps us imagine lounging on a beach in the Caribbean rather than wherever we happen to find ourselves today.

The recipe calls for at least 4 hours to allow the pineapples to soak up the booze, so make sure you give yourself a bit of time to prep this one. And for those of you Gluten Free folks out there, be sure to check our list ofGluten Free Booze options.

A note from Epicurious about the recipe:

St. John Frizell of Fort Defiance in Red Hook, Brooklyn, created this recipe for a Fourth of July drinks featurethis is the white option in a special red, white, and blue Sangria series. For this Caribbean-inspired pitcher drink, Frizell recommends using good white rum or, even better, a mix of white rum and aged rum. A funky aged Jamaican rum, like Smith & Cross, will add a profound depth of flavor to the mix, he notes. For the wine, Frizell says to use a young unoaked white, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling.

What Is Vodka Made From

The 8 Best Gluten

Most people think that vodka is made solely from potatoes, but this is actually a common misconception.

It is, in fact, much more likely for vodka to be produced from grains like wheat and barley.

Vodka is also produced from products like potato, grapes, sorghum wheat and other non-gluten containing ingredients but wheat is the most common base ingredient for vodka.

For the most part, though, this still shouldnt be an issue. The distillation process of alcohols like vodka is said to remove impurities like gluten, making it safe for the gluten-sensitive.

This is disputed by some, so for now, all we have to go off is the manufacturers word, or stick to vodkas thatre distilled using non-grain ingredients.

Should Vodka Be Marketed As Gluten

Controversy erupts over new labeling law

  • Print

Here’s a new twist on an old drink: gluten-free distilled spirits. After a 2012 Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau interim ruling, gluten-free labeled vodkas hit the market this year, including National Basketball Association legend Shaquille ONeals gluten-free Luv Shaq.

Gluten, a protein in wheat, barley and rye, causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms in people suffering from the autoimmune disorder celiac disease . According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, three million Americans suffer from CD, which attacks the lining of the small intestine and keeps the body from absorbing necessary nutrients. The FDA says CD is linked to anemia, osteoporosis, diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease and intestinal cancers.

Amidst these serious concerns for celiac sufferers, healthy food eaters and celebrities are living gluten-free lifestyles, increasing the demand for gluten free products.

But the new spirits labeling trend contradicts long-standing advisories from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that all distilled spirits are gluten-free unless it is added after distillation. So is this all a marketing gimmick?

But is this testing even necessary?
