If you enjoy Pizza Hut, I have some good news! Pizza Hut does currently offer gluten-free crust as an option. Its only available in one size at the moment , but its certified gluten-free, which means its as safe as can possibly be.

In fact, in the US, they have two pizzas which already come prepared so theres almost no chance of cross contact in the kitchen. Theres a ready made gluten free cheese pizza and a ready made gluten free pepperoni pizza both of which are certified gluten free, and certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group.

Gluten-free eaters, rejoice: Pizza Hut is hopping on the gluten-free train, with gluten-free pizzas set to hit the menu January 26th, Huffington Post reports. Hooray!

Right now, the only other big-name pizza chain offering gluten-free options is Dominos. But as the Huffington Post states, all of Dominos pizzas are made in one common kitchen, so theres room for cross-contamination. In other words, its a bit risky for people with Celiac disease.

Pizza Huts gluten-free pizzas, on the other hand, will be made in collaboration with popular gluten-free brand Udis, and theyll be certified gluten-free. Udis will provide the certified gluten-free crusts, and the pizzas will be prepared at Pizza Hut using procedures certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group, like storing all the gluten-free pizza crusts and toppings in a separate area and baking the pizzas on designated parchment paper, the companys website states.

Certified gluten-free pizza options, prepared using the procedures mentioned above, will be limited to cheese and pepperoni to start. But non-Celiac folks who are just trying to avoid gluten and arent too worried about cross-contamination can opt for the Create Your Own pizza option, and request Udis gluten-free crust.

I am certain we will be ordering one of these bad boys to the Philly Mag offices come the end of January, because we just cant say no to pizza. Well be sure to report back on how it tastes, so stay tuned.

The Process Of Making A Gluten

To prepare for the introduction of the Pizza Hut Cheese-only and Pepperoni Gluten-Free Pizzas, GIG partnered with Pizza Hut to develop customized procedures for preparing the pizzas inside Pizza Hut restaurants. For starters, the Udis gluten-free crust, which is the foundation for every Gluten-Free Pizza served at Pizza Hut, as well as the cheese, marinara sauce and pepperoni, will be kept in a designated Gluten-Free Kit inside each restaurant. All team members preparing the Gluten-free Pizza will wear gloves, bake the fresh-to-order pizza on parchment paper and use a designated gluten-free pizza cutter. Then, the pizzas will be placed in pizza boxes featuring Udis Gluten-Free crust for delivery.

Pizza Huts Gluten Free Pizza Review

After studying their GF menu and getting more acquainted with the nitty-gritty details, we randomly chose one of our local Pizza Huts and popped in to see what the actual preparation is like for gluten-free pizza orders.

We decided to order the Veggie Lovers on the gluten-free crust. The pizza was ready in 15 minutes and was handed to us in a special box that they use for gluten-free orders.

Based on our order, here is each aspect of our gluten-free pizza experience at Pizza Hut in more detail:

The Employees & Pizza Preparation

The employees were pretty nice but didnt have much knowledge of gluten-free specifics beyond the obvious.

They knew about the menu and that a separate cutter must be used for gluten-free pizzas, but that was about it. We didnt get the vibe that they had any extra training on allergens for more in-depth questions.

As for the preparation, unlike the open kitchen concept at Blaze, Pieology, or MOD Pizza restaurants, pizzas are prepared on counters away from the customers sight.

So, you will just have to trust that all the right procedures, if any, are being followed to keep the pizzas as gluten-free as possible.

Again, in Pizza Huts defense, they do have a disclaimer that their kitchens are NOT gluten-free and cant guarantee against cross-contamination.

So, we settled for the only three things they offered: Udis GF crust, the use of a separate pizza cutter, and a different to-go box.

Is Pizza Huts Gluten Free Pizza Safe For Celiacs

Pizza Huts gluten-free pizza is NOT safe for Celiacs or people with a severe gluten allergy/intolerance.

The main reason for this is that Pizza Huts kitchens are NOT gluten-free environments and, as such, there is a super high risk of cross-contamination.

In fact, other than a separate pizza cutter and crust, there is no other special equipment or procedures in place to protect against gluten cross-contamination.

And, in Pizza Huts defense, they never claimed to be a Celiac-safe environment. They only offer a gluten-free crust as an option for those who wish to minimize their gluten intake for dietary reasons.
