Why I’m Reviewing Gluten Free Pancake Mix Brands

Great Value Gluten Free Pancake and Waffle Mix Gluten Free? Gluten Test #2.

I used to resist the very idea of baking mixes entirely, but now I understand the importance of certainty and convenience. To satisfy my love of recipe-creation, I’ve even created a recipe for a DIY gluten free pancake mix.

But I do understand that many of you like to use gluten free pancake mixes. And when you do a Google search for gluten free pancakes, you may not be looking for a recipe. You may actually be looking for a pancake mix!

The first time I created a best-of review list, it was a list of 8 of the best gluten free packaged bread brands. When my son first went gluten free in late 2004, there were almost no gluten free packaged products at all to buy. I would have killed for a non-spongey loaf of gluten free bread that I didn’t bake myself.

I’m thrilled at the variety of gluten free packaged products available to us today. It’s a luxury to have so many brands to choose from, but unfortunately, they’re simply not all worth your money.

My goal then was to save you money on packaged GF products, and it remains the same as the list of best-of product reviews has grown. You should buy only the best, but until you try them how do you know which brands are the best? That’s where I come in!

These product reviews are not sponsored by any of the companies that make the products on the list, and I purchase everything myself with my own moneyincluding some products that I don’t ultimately recommend to you. That way, you know you can trust my reviews as truly unbiased.

Putting Great Value Products To The Nima Sensor Test

Upon the request of a reader, I put two Great Value products to the Nima Sensor test. The Nima Sensor is a portable gluten-detecting device that enables you to test your food for hidden gluten. You can learn more about it in this article, 13 Things to Know About the Nima Sensor.

I first tested the Great Value gluten-free hamburger buns . As you can see, Nima is all smiles, which means it did not find any gluten.

I also tested the Cream of Mushroom soup, and again, Nima Sensor didnt find any gluten. I encourage you to read my article where I discuss store-bought gluten-free soups and share more Nima test results. The Progresso soup results may shock you as they shocked me!

Krusteaz Gluten Free Buttermilk Pancake Mix

Betty Crocker Bisquick Pancake Mix, Gluten Free, 16 oz

I wanted to try Krusteaz’s pancake mix for a similar reason to why I wanted to try Pamela’s baking mix. Since their products tend to be available in wholesale warehouses like Costco, many of you have asked me if I like them.

I’ve never tried their all purpose gluten free flour blend, but I imagine I should. The Krusteaz gluten free pancake mix made pancakes that tasted good and had very good texture.

However, two of my three kids didn’t care for the pancakes overall because they have a slightly bitter aftertaste. I find that products with an aftertaste or products that have a gritty rice flour blend are best described as good, for gluten free.

Something being good, for gluten free bothers me so much, since we really should have moved past that by now. But I do still think the brand is worth a try since one of my kids enjoyed them. But only if you can find the mix for a really good price. Then, it’s worth a go.

Gluten Free Bread Brands At Walmart

When you walk into a grocery store, there will usually be an aisle full of fresh bread. The smell is almost mouthwatering and was always my favorite part of going shopping. Id walk around nibbling the end a baguette as I just couldnt resist. Then the diagnosis came. The bread was, of course, an absolute no-go. But that doesnt mean there arent options available! Even in the two years since my diagnosis, the bread options for us have come on in leaps and bounds. Today were going to be taking a look at whether Walmart sells gluten-free bread, and if so what gluten-free bread brands at Walmart are available.

How Long Can I Store Gluten

This mix can be stored in an airtight container for up to three months at room temperature.

It may stay fresh longer, but I wouldn’t know because we usually griddle our way through a triple batch of this gluten-free pancake recipe every other week.

For store bought gluten-free pancake mixes, always check the expiration date printed on the box.

Is anyone else enjoying their weekends more now that nothings open? I admit to over-scheduling weekends in the past to pack in all the fun I felt we should be having as a family on our days off together. The result was making wonderful memories, of course, but not taking the time to simply rest which I now realize is so needed at the end of a busy week!

For example this past weekend, instead of hustling off to some festival or the Farmers Market, we went for a family walk. I cleaned, gardened, read a book, and took a nap. TOOK. A. NAP. Totally unheard of! All without feeling guilty that we did nothingbecause theres nothing to do! Can you relate? Anyway, I entered this week actually feeling refreshed because we took it so slow. This is a change of pace that Im going to work hard to maintain for as long as possible after this whole mess is over.

One way things have stayed the same is that we still go the extra mile for breakfast on the weekends. Actually, make that half a mile. Heck, maybe even a quarter mileat a wog. That is to say, Perfect Gluten Free Pancakes are a totally tasty way to kick off the day and take mere minutes to make with fridge and pantry staples!

Costco Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix Review

Just add water to this Costco pancake mix to make fluffy, delicious pancakes!

Costco Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix

Today Im reviewing the Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix from Costco. Im always very skeptical about pancake mixes that only require adding water. I cant imagine how a pancake mix can taste good without added eggs and milk.

This is a big bag of mix!

Other Krustez products from Costco Ive tried are the Costco Krusteaz Meyer Lemon Bar Mix, Costco Krusteaz Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix and the Krusteaz Pumpkin Spice Quick Bread Mix. My favorite pancake mix from Costco is the Kodiak Cakes.

Mmm! How good does this stack of pancakes look?

What Defines A Low Sodium Pancake Mix

Most pancake mixes contain between 600 and 700 mg of sodium per serving . Anything that contains 360 mg of sodium or less per ¼ cup serving can be referred to as low sodium.

Keep in mind, the sodium content listed is only for one serving of the pancake mix, so if you plan on having more than one serving of the pancake mix, youre going to be consuming more sodium than is stated on the label.

For example, if the low sodium pancake mix has 290 mg of sodium per ¼ cup but youre using 1 cup of mix, then the sodium content of the pancakes would actually be 1160mg of sodium, which would no longer be low sodium.

How To Make Easy Gluten

Glutino Gluten Free Pantry Fluffy Pancake Mix, 16
  • I always like to start by mixing my liquid ingredients first. In a large bowl whisk the egg , granulated sugar, pure vanilla extract, and the vegetable oil together.
  • Add the gluten-free flour, xanthan gum , gluten-free baking powder, and salt to the egg mixture and mix until fully combined.
  • Stir in milk and mix until smooth. For thinner pancakes stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk.
  • Scoop the batter into a ¼ cup measuring cup and pour the batter onto a greased griddle or pan for each pancake.
  • Cook the pancakes until the batter starts to bubble a little and the pancakes start to puff. Flip/turn over the pancakes and cook the pancakes until they are golden brown.
  • Top with butter, syrup or favorite topping. Enjoy!
  • These pancakes can be frozen and reheated in the microwave. To freeze the pancakes, allow them to completely cool and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and flash freeze them for 10 minutes. Flash freezing them keeps them from sticking together. Once the pancakes are flash frozen, you can remove them from the baking sheet and place them inside a freezer-safe bag or air-tight container.

Should Pancake Mix Be Thin Or Thick

The batter, once prepared, should be thin enough to easily pour and spread onto a hot, greased griddle but not so thin that it runs all over the griddle. Aim for it to spread to about 1/4-inch thick. If the batter seems too thick, add a little more water or milk. If it seems too thin, add a couple more tablespoons of batter.

Best Vanilla: Bobs Red Mill Gluten

Courtesy of Instacart

Bobs Red Mill is a leader in baking mixes, and its gluten-free yellow variety is the best around. Its moist, fluffy, and delicious all on its own, but it also provides a great neutral base for fancier desserts, like pineapple upside-down, carrot, or fresh lemon cake.

If you want, you can also use this mix to make a white cake instead of a yellow one. Just use egg whites in place of whole eggs. Most reviewers say its so good that if you dont tell people its gluten-free, they wont be able to tell the difference.

Homemade Gluten Free Flour Blend

Using a homemade mix of gluten free flours made the very best, soft, fluffy pancakes.

I think this is because I was able to adjust the amount of gum needed and I used the bare minimum per recipe as any more than that tends to make them sticky, this is a problem with most ready made blends that have gum added which is often too much in my opinion.

I tested and retested this recipe with various gluten free flour combinations and the best results I got were using a combination of white rice flour, brown rice flour, and potato starch. If you can find those specific flours I recommend using them in the quantities listed in the recipe below. You could substitute one or more of the flours but the result will probably be different.
