These are a special biscuit made by the Red Lobster seafood chain.

When the Red Lobster biscuits were originally introduced they were called freshly baked hot cheese garlic bread. Descriptive but not a very catchy name.

Five years later they were renamed Cheddar Bay Biscuits as a nod to the seaside ambiance of the restaurants.

These biscuits are a wonderful combination of a traditional biscuit laced with cheddar cheese and light garlic flavor.

There is no Old Bay seasoning in them .

How To Store Garlic Cheddar Biscuits

Store the fully baked and cooled Garlic Cheddar Biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. Reheat the biscuits in a toaster oven before serving. Alternatively, you can prep the biscuit dough and store the dough in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking.

Gluten free Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Since this is a simple drop biscuit style recipe , our Gluten-Free Garlic Cheddar Biscuits can be on your table in less than 25 minutes. Here are the quick steps to make them:

  • Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl: Mix the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt.
  • Cut in the butter: Add the cold butter using a pastry blender, two knives, or a fork, mix it in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs or the size of small peas. The butter wont fully melt, but will melt into the biscuits as they bake, creating a tender, flakey texture and pockets of delicious flavor throughout.
  • Add the cheese and herbs: Stir in 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar and the parsley or chives. Also stir in the milk and egg until the mixture forms a soft, slightly sticky, slightly chunky dough .
  • Form the biscuit mounds: Using a spoon, drop the dough into 12 even mounds onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the 2 tablespoons melted butter over the unbaked biscuit mounds.
  • Bake and top with cheese: Bake the biscuits for 8 minutes, then remove from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup shredded cheddar over the biscuits along with a pinch of flakey salt. Return to the oven to finish baking. Bake the biscuits until they are lightly browned on the bottom and no longer doughy on the inside, about 2 to 4 minutes more, depending on your oven.

    Copycat Cheddar Bay Biscuits

    I love me some biscuits. That was one of the hardest things to give up when I went gluten free. And while I dont mind not eating at Red Lobster anymore, Ive always been fond of their Cheddar Bay Biscuits. Theres several copycat recipes out there, and I recently came across some golden advice to get those lovies just right.

    But can you make a decent biscuit with gluten free flour? Ive made Cheddar Bay Biscuits before, but this was my first attempt at making gluten free biscuits I figured it was one of those fundamentally impossible tasks without a bunch of unpronounceable ingredients and an industrial bakery and so never attempted it before now.

    Once again, I used the all-purpose gluten free flour fromC. C. Dolch Health Foods . It substitutes 1:1, so this recipe can be modified to use regular flour as well. I would love to try a sourdough version some day, as that would make these much more healthy, although I wonder how that would taste. I modified this Southern Buttermilk Biscuits recipe, and followed the technique mentioned in the comments for this copycat recipe.

    Since I had learned several years ago the Three Magic Secrets to big tall awesome flaky-layer biscuits , I attempted to use that magic on this gluten free version. I quickly learned, however, that the lack of actual gluten in the flour meant that the dough just wasnt the same. It didnt have that stretchy quality that you find with regular gluten flours.

    How To Make Red Lobster Biscuits:

    1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and garlic.

    2. Cut the stick of butter in small pea size cubes.

    3. Using a stand mixer, food processor or blender, mix the butter into the dry flour mixture until butter crumble form.

    4. Stir in cheese and parsley.

    5. Using your hand or stirring paddle for stand mixer, combine in the buttermilk. Do. It over kneads the batter you want it firm enough to form into a mound but not too firm.

    6. Spray the air fryer basket with oil and using an ice cream scoop, spoon out a clump of batter and place in air fryer basket. Repeat to fill your basket.

    7. Spray biscuits and cook on 380 for 5 minutes. Turn and cook for 2 more minutes

    • Salt do not omit here, the salt helps to tighten the gluten strains, but also really brings the flavor out
    • Dairy Free Milk and Apple Cider Vinegar When combined, these two ingredients mimic buttermilk which is the flavor that we want in this recipe.
    • Garlic powder and old bay seasoning these two seasonings together really make up the flavor of the Red Lobster biscuits

    How Do I Make Vegan Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Style Biscuits

    How to make Gluten Free Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits
  • Start by pre-heating the oven to 450° F.
  • Then simply place a cup of vegan Bisquick in a mixing bowl.
  • Add a ½ cup of vegan shredded cheddar cheese and stir.
  • Pour in 1/3 cup of PLAIN soy milk or other plant-based milk.
  • Mix with a fork, just enough to combine the ingredients. .
  • Drop about 1/3 cup of biscuit dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet
  • Bake for 8-11 minutes until slightly golden and dry.
  • While the biscuits are cooking mix together a ¼ cup of melted vegan butter, 1 tsp parsley, ¼ tsp. garlic salt and 1/8 tsp of Old Bay Seasoning.
  • After the biscuits are done baking, place them one at a time in the bowl of garlic butter to coat them completely.
  • Set them on a plate or in a bread basket and serve warm.
  • Tips for making perfect vegan biscuits:
    • If the dough seems dry, add another splash of soy milk until all the flour is moist and sticky like traditional biscuit dough.
    • You can make these with regular wheat Bisquick or store-bought gluten-free Bisquick, however, if you are making them gluten-free, they come out the best with mygluten-free Bisquick recipe.
    • If you are using store-bought Bisquick, be sure to check the ingredients and make sure that it is vegan. .
    • You can use any type of vegan margarine for the garlic butter, but I prefermy homemade vegan butterrecipe! It tastes more like real butter than any other vegan margarine that I have tried.
    • If you dont have Old Bay Seasoning you can leave it out or add a small dash of celery salt, cayenne, and paprika to the butter.

    Grate + Cube The Butter

    YesI know. You might be wondering why Ive stated this but it works. Since well be using 1 stick in this recipe, I simply grate the entire stick of butter. However, if you were using more than 1 stick-then you could grate 1 stick and cube the other. Honestly, I think that the variation in the butter pieces helps some to melt faster and settle more in the dough, which creates a beautiful flakiness like no other.

    Gather these basic pantry and refrigerator ingredients to make this delicious homemade Garlic Cheddar Biscuits recipe that you can serve at any meal.

    Gluten-free flour blend we recommend using Bobs Red Mill One-to-One Gluten-Free Baking Flour or King Arthur Measure-for-Measure Gluten-Free Flour. You can also use an equal amount of unbleached all-purpose flour if you dont need or want biscuits that are gluten free

    Unsalted butter youll need one stick of butter for this recipe use 6 tablespoons of cold butter for the biscuits and melt 2 tablespoons of butter to brush over top of the biscuits. If you only have salted butter, omit the 1/4 teaspoon salt in the biscuit portion of the recipe

    Shredded cheddar cheese we love to shred our own cheddar from a block because it melts nicely into the biscuits, but you can also use pre-shredded cheese

    Fresh parsley you can also use fresh chives, or use a combination of fresh parsley and chives alternatively you can use 1 teaspoon of dried parsley or chives

    Milk use dairy or unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice

    Egg youll need 1 egg for this recipe. For an egg-free version, omit the egg and replace with an additional 1 tablespoon milk and 1 teaspoon of vinegar

    Salt use fine salt in the biscuits and a flakey salt, such as Maldon flaked salt or a coarse sea salt, to top the biscuits

    Are These Like Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits

    Absolutely! Youre looking at the literal gluten-free version of Red Lobsters version of cheddar bay biscuits. Other recipes have used old bay seasoning, however, I chose to stick to a handful of herbs which creates a beautiful kick of flavor which works together to act as a nice reminder taste of its original counterpart.

    Herbs that I use: dried parsley , garlic powder, smoked paprika , salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.

    Red Lobster Is Now Selling Gluten

    Red Lobster has announced it will now sell a gluten-free version of its Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix, so lovers of the cheesy, crumbly biscuits can enjoy them safely at home!

    Beginning in August, the mix can be purchased at Walmart stores in the United States.

    The biscuits offered at the Red Lobster restaurant will still contain gluten, but fans can now buy a gluten-free version of the mix. Red Lobster has a food allergy wizard on its website that allows you to easily find menu options without allergens.

    Red Lobsters iconic Cheddar Bay Biscuits were first introduced in 1992 and, after more than two decades, a gluten-free version will finally be available of these savory biscuits.
