Gluten Free Beer: Real Beer Without the Gluten

Barley malt and barley malt extract are also not gluten-free. The word malt on a food label usually indicates that there is gluten in the product. Examples include malt vinegar, malted milk, malted beverages and malted syrup. So, sadly, Stella Artois is NOT a gluten free beer.

Lets Define Some Terms: Gluten

This article focuses mainly on gluten-free brewing, not gluten-reduced. There is a HUGE difference between the two and its very important to know before proceeding, especially if youre brewing for someone with Celiac.

Jason Morgan wrote a great article on CraftBrewingBusiness on the difference between the two terms, and why gluten-reduced beer may still be dangerous to those with severe allergies or Celiac.

In order for a beer to be truly gluten-free it must be brewed exclusively with 100% gluten-free ingredients and not come into contact with anything that may contain gluten. This is no easy task, as well see later in this article.

Gluten-reduced beer, also labeled as crafted to remove gluten, is becoming more common in the commercial realm. Omission makes some solid gluten-reduced beers, and Stones Delicious IPA is a must try.

Gluten-reduced means that traditional gluten-containing ingredients were used to brew the beer, but a technique or product such as Clarity Ferm was used to reduce the amount of gluten in the final product.

Clarity Ferm, a product of White Labs, contains an enzyme which breaks down the proteins in beer that causes chill haze and nearly all gluten protein chains in the beer.

Either way, Clarity Ferm does a great job at its originally intended purpose clarifying your beer.

You can find Clarity Ferm in vials suitable for 5g batches online or at your local homebrew store .

Regional Gluten Free Beers

Other regional beers are worth looking for. Aurochs Brewing Company is one of my personal favorites. Brewed out of the Pittsburgh area, but its fans are growing, so expect a wider distribution soon!

They also have a fan-favorite tasting room which I, for one, can not wait to visit!

A Maryland brew with a taproom and dedicated Gluten Free Brewhouse is BCBrewery. They currently ship within the state of Maryland and also to PA and VA. Sour, Blonde, IPA, Stout and Pale Ales made from millet, buckwheat, quinoa, and rice all naturally gluten free. Something else cool about BC Brewery? They also offer a selection of ciders, seltzers, and a NEW Beer/Wine Hybrid that are also naturally gluten free and are available on tap and in cans, crowlers or growlers.

Bierly Brewing Company out of Oregon makes IPA, Dubbel, Pilsner and Porter varieties, as well as seasonal flavors. Super delish and of course, naturally gluten free. Made from gluten free grains like sorghum, millet and rice.

Is Gluten Reduced Beer Safe For Celiac Disease

If youre looking for celiac-safe beer, do not be fooled into drinking gluten reduced beer.

Most beer is made from malted barley, which contains gluten. But gluten-free beer is brewed using other grains, including sorghum, buckwheat, millet and brown rice. These naturally gluten-free grains make gluten-free beer naturally gluten-free. Many companies make gluten-free beer from these grains. Some of these companies take the extra step to make sure their beer is certified gluten-free too.

Gluten removed beer also called gluten reduced or crafted to reduce gluten muddies the water for those who have celiac disease. In these beers, brewers add an enzyme to break down the gluten molecule into smaller pieces that are too small to be detected in lab tests and supposedly too small for your body to detect as gluten. Even if these gluten reduced beers contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, they may not be safe for those with celiac disease.

Why Drink Gluten Free Beer

As I mentioned in the beginning, the main target market for gluten free beer is for people who suffer from Celiac disease. For those of you who are not familiar with the disease, someone with Celiac disease will often have a strong negative reaction to gliadin found in wheat.

For some, dietary restrictions arent just limited to a wheat free diet but can include other popular grains, such as barley and rye.

There is also a growing movement of people that have taken up the voluntary action of maintaining a gluten free diet, most people who fall into this category are typically on a special wheat or gluten free diet.

While still others, have resigned not to eat gluten based products for any number of other reasons.

A beer labeled gluten-free might seem like a safe option. But heres the thing, neither products gluten-removed/reduced or beer labeled gluten-free are truly gluten-free.

Gluten-reduced or gluten-removed beers do not remove all gluten from the final product, making them unsafe for those with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity .

Gluten-free beer is brewed with grains that are commonly used as gluten-free substitutes, including rice, millet, and sorghum. Although these grains are considered gluten-free by food labeling standards, they still contain different forms of gluten proteins that have been shown to contribute to persistent health issues for those with celiac disease and NCGS. These proteins include the following:

  • Rice Contains a type of gluten protein called orzenin. The proteins in rice have also been linked to FPIES or inflammation of the colon.

    Gluten-free beer that tastes Gluten-free-free. I give it an 11. Honest to god, I get lucky, sometimes. When I was a child I managed to watch Spinal Tap without anyone having told me it was fake. And I recently managed to drink down a couple of New Planet Beers before reading the label or box and realizing they were gluten-free.     Region: Colorado | ABV: 5.2% | Tasting Notes: Caramel, toasted malt

    Colorado’s craft-brewing reputation extends into the gluten-free realm. The state’s first 100 percent gluten-free brewery was Golden’s Holidaily Brewing Co. The company is impressing beer drinkers, winning awards, and growing quickly in distribution.
