“I wish bean proteins tasted like beef,” jokes a spokesperson from Beyond. “That would make our job a lot easier.” After creating the proteins and fats that make up the bulk of the Beyond Burger, the next step is to focus on the taste. This is where the “natural flavors” in the Beyond Burger ingredients come in. These are what give the Beyond Burger its signature meaty taste and umami.
According to the Beyond representative who spoke with Mashed, there are some 1,000 molecules that make up what we recognize as the flavor of a beef burger patty. Fortunately for a vegan meat company such as Beyond, the same flavor molecules also exist in plants. For example, one of the flavor molecules in beef is also found in parsley.
“But that doesn’t mean you can chop up parsley, and voila! It tastes like medium rare steak,” says the spokesperson. It’s obviously a much more scientific and complicated process.
What Beyond does is go through these 1,000 flavor molecules, isolate what they are, then search for those same molecules in plants. Then they slowly build up, flavor by flavor, molecule by molecule, like modern day Seurats creating a work of tasty pointillism. Eventually they come up with a combination that mimics the taste of beef.
The Beyond Burger combination is quite specific, and very secretive. Flavor-making, whether it’s for Beyond Burger, candy, or iced teas, is a very competitive industry, and the recipes are a well-guarded point of pride.

Beyond Meat is made of a blend of soy and pea protein, flours, and fiber. It doesnt contain animal products, but honestly you cant even tell you are not eating chicken. It tastes so delicious and so real. Well It tastes even better than chicken! And it is animal free, cruelty free. Products are safe for people living with Celiac and both Beyond Meat products and their facility is certified gluten free. They offer 3 flavors in their line: Lightly Seasoned, Grilled and Southwest Style.
The website informs that Beyond Meat is not organic, but they are completely non-GMO. The company was founded in 2009.
How can you enjoy those? Almost the same way you would normally use chicken. I tried it in many variations and it always tasted delicious. To be honest after I opened a package I started eating straight from it. It tastes great cold and hot. I put it in my salad and made it with fried rice and veggies. I even put it on top of my vegan/ gluten free pizza! Personally my favorite flavor is Grilled version but they all taste great! They are just amazing!

Trying Out The Beyond Meat Beast Burger
Welcome to Gluten Free Aussie Vegan. Today instead of sharing a recipe Im going to show and do a little review of what I ate a few nights ago.
Ive seen all over youtube, American Vegans have been loving the range of burger patties from Beyond Meat, those being The Beast Burger and The Beyond Burger. They also have a range of sausages too. Now out here in Australia we havent got anywhere near the amount of variety of faux meat alternatives as you will get in UK and USA, at least not where I live but I think its slowly starting to catch up. If youre gluten free like me though, you will have discovered that a lot of the meat alternatives that we DO have are often not gluten free argh.
So recently Id heard that The Beyond Burger had started to make its way out to Australia, showing up in some of the major cities like Melbourne and Adelaide. Then I heard that the takeaway franchise Lord of the Fries had started using it in one of their burgers but alas I dont have a franchise here where I live. The hype was that people say it tastes shockingly like a real beef patty and that when you cook it, it even oozes juices that look similar to what you get with a beef patty but through the use of beet juice.

Bottom Line: How Healthy Are Beyond Burgers Really
Beyond Burgers are vegan and plant-based, so that means theyre healthy too, right? Not exactly. While the Beyond Burger may have a good amount of protein , it doesnt exactly have vegetables . So despite being a “veggie burger,” it’s not getting you any closer to your five to seven servings of vegetables a day, says Goodson.

They are made of highly processed ingredients like protein isolated from plants, says Rumsey. That means that while these patties are a meat substitute, they’re not necessarily a healthier meat substitute.
The Beyond Burger is a plant-based option for someone who is trying to reduce their intake of red meat, or for someone who doesnt ever eat red meat and wants something close to a burger, says Gans. But if those aren’t your goals, it probably isn’t worth the switch.

Overall The Beyond Meat Chicken Tenders Tasted More Like Real Chicken Than Any Other Plant
If we’re ranking out of 10, I’d give these babies a 8/10.
Why didn’t these get the perfect 10? I think the tenders could be just slightly more flavorful or even offered in different varieties of flavors/spices if they decide to go that route. And, as someone who’s still not fully back to going to restaurants all the time, I would have loved it if these were available to purchase in grocery stories for at-home cooking.
Update: I also deducted a point after learning the tenders aren’t gluten-free, like most of Beyond’s other offerings.
Both Are Convenient To Use In A Variety Of Recipes
Both products are a versatile and convenient replacement for ground meat.
They hold their shape well during cooking, are easy to prepare, and even release a red fluid similar to what you see if cooking meat. This meat-like texture and feel differentiate them from other plant-based burgers currently available.
The Beyond Burger comes as a pre-shaped patty while the Impossible Burger is sold as plant-based grounds that can be formed into the shape and size of your choice.
That said, the company behind the Beyond Burger also manufactures Beyond Beef a package of plant-based ground meat that can be used in the same way as the Impossible Burger grounds.
This makes both burgers a handy meat replacement for a variety of recipes beyond just burgers, from lasagna and bolognese sauce to gyros and skewers.
The Impossible and Beyond Burgers have a similar texture and meat-like feel. Theyre both simple to cook and can easily replace red meat in countless recipes beyond just burgers.

Is The Beyond Burger Actually Healthier Than A Beef Burger
Per four-ounce uncooked Beyond Burger patty, youll get:

The downer: Fat and calorie-wise, the Beyond Burger is about on-par with a beef burger, says Dallas-based nutritionist Amy Goodson, RD. And it actually packs way more sodium. Also, a regular beef burger doesnt have carbs, while the Beyond Burger has five grams.
So if youre turning to the Beyond Burger to save on fat or cals, youll be disappointed, Goodson says. Plus, you can make or break the health of any burger with what you pair it with.
Ultimately, its hard to say whether the Beyond Burger or a regular burger is healthier it depends on what youre going for, says nutritionist Alissa Rumsey, RD. If youre looking to eat more plant-based foods and still want to have a burger then, yeah, a Beyond Burger might be more in line with your wellness goals, she says. But if youre cool with eating meat, having a Beyond Burger instead wont suddenly turn you into a health ninja.
What Is The Beyond Burger Made Of
What else is in the beef doppelganger? Beyond Meat says it sources all the building blocks of meat from plants.
The brand recently updated their formula, for what they claim to be an even “meatier” flavor and texture than the original product, according to a press release. Their goal: to create “marbling designed to melt and tenderize like traditional ground beef.”
Heres the full Beyond Burger ingredients list: water, pea protein, expeller-pressed canola oil, refined coconut oil, rice protein, natural flavors, cocoa butter, mung bean protein, methylcellulose, potato starch, apple extract, pomegranate extract, salt, potassium chloride, vinegar, lemon juice concentrate, sunflower lecithin, beet juice extract.
The protein in this new formulation comes from peas, mung beans, and brown ricewhich create a complete protein, or a protein that has all nine essential amino acids. This is significant, because few plant proteins are complete on their own. But this clever combo pairs two incomplete proteins together to create a complete one.
Cocoa butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil provide the fats.
Curious about that beet juice extract? It’s there to mimic the bloodiness of beef.
Note that there are no actualvegetables present, unlike other veggie burgers on the market. It’s also worth noting, though, that these patties are one of the only plant-based burgers made without genetically modified organisms, soy, or gluten.
