Tips For Making This Gluten Free Pita Recipe

  • Heat your wet ingredients before adding them into the dry ingredients. Just pop them into the microwave for about 30 seconds to warm them before mixing them into the dry mixture, and your dough will integrate much better.
  • Do NOT over-mix the dough! While mixing the wet into the dry ingredients, stop mixing once the flour is just integrated enough that the mixture can hold its shape when pressed together, even if its still a bit crumbly. It wont be a perfect dough! This is the most crucial tip, as overworking your dough may result in harder/less fluffy pitas once theyre baked.
  • Your pitas dont need to be perfect. Dont worry about making perfectly round pitaslet them be rustic! If youre open to making mini-to-medium sized pitas, I think these work best.
  • Monitor as they bake and flip once slightly browning on the bottom. Your gluten free pita bread wont need long in the oven. After about 10 minutes they should be ready to flip, but monitor them the first time you try this recipe to make sure they dont overbake!

How To Store Gluten Free Bread

Gluten Free Pita Bread Brands (and Where to Buy Them)

When storing gluten free bread, its important to keep it in the fridge. You can also store it in the freezer for best freshness but its important that you slice your bread before storing. Its really difficult to slice into a frozen, gluten free bread, so make sure you do this!

Gluten free bread is best enjoyed freshly toasted regardless, so my preferred method of storage is slicing, freezing and toasting.

Knead the gluten-free dough for a few minutes, form a ball, and place it back into the bowl. Then, cover the bowl with cling film and allow it to rise in a warm area for 45-60 minutes.

Note: You could heat your oven for just a few minutes, then switch off and leave the dough in the warm oven.

Shape the pitas

Divide the dough into 5 pieces , or 10 if you want mini pittas, and shape each piece into a ball.

Leave to rest for a further 10-15 minutes before rolling each dough ball into a circle around ¼-inch thickness using a floured rolling pin.

The first step in getting some more clarity to your questions about what foods to avoid to improve your digestive health is to clearly identify your food triggers. Its easy to make up your mind that bread and dairy are completely off limits because every time you consume them you seem to experience symptoms. While it may be the case that you are sensitive to these foods, the timing of your symptoms can sometimes be misleading and hard to pinpoint. Thats why its so important to go through that first step of clearly identifying your triggers.

If you want to learn more about how you can identify your trigger foods, I guide you through the step-by-step process in my FREE class: Identify Your Triggers.

What Happens To Bread Without Gluten

Glutenis a stretchy protein found in wheat that adds elasticity to a doughgiving the bread a light, fluffy texture. So, naturally, without glutens magical stretchy properties, many gluten free breads turn out dense, crumbly, or downright cardboard-like.

For this reason, gluten free bread-making requires plenty of creativity and lots of recipe testing. Without the gluten, we need to incorporate other sources of stretchiness into our doughlike yogurt, eggs, tapioca starch, xanthan gum, and so on.

Elimination Diet For Ibs: The Low Fodmap Diet

After youve identified your triggers, youll be better able to answer the question of what bread you might be able to tolerate and if you really need to be avoiding it altogether. The way you do this is by working through an elimination diet, such as the Low FODMAP diet.

The way the Low FODMAP diet works is you start by eliminating all foods that are high in fermentable sugars for 4-6 weeks, or until you become symptom-free. Then, you start adding foods back in, one at a time, to see which ones cause you to start experiencing symptoms again. Dietary triggers are much easier to clearly identify when youre not already experiencing symptoms.

Once you start reintroducing foods, you can try half a slice of regular wheat bread. You may find that your body tolerates this well. If so, you can slowly increase this amount to one or even two slices as long as you are still feeling good, but I wouldnt recommend consuming any more than two slices of bread per day. If it turns out that you cant tolerate regular wheat bread, it may be time to consider some Low FODMAP bread options.
