How To Prepare Gf Naan
First, you make a flax egg by mixing ground flaxseed with water. Skip this step if using an egg.
Add yogurt and oil to the flax egg and mix to combine.
Next, add this yogurt mixture to the dry ingredients, kneading the dough as you go. Then add warm water, bit by bit, until you have a soft dough. If you used an egg, you may not need much water at all.
Divide the dough into 6 balls. If you want to make larger naan, divide the dough into 5 or even 4 pieces.
You can either make round naan, or form the balls into a teardrop shape by rolling one end of the dough between your hands.
Roll out the naan. Sprinkle the nigella seeds now or while you cook them.
Once youre rolled them out, place them on a hot griddle, nonstick pan, or tava. Turn over and cook them with a lid on top to create steam. This allows the naan bread to cook quickly while charring the outside.
Can I Freeze Your Gluten Free Naan Bread Dough
Yes you can! And to be honest, this is probably better than freezing the finished product as they will ALWAYS come out better when freshly baked.
Simply pop your dough into an airtight container and freeze for up to 2-3 months. I like to freeze my dough ready-portioned out in 5 small, separate containers so I have the option of defrosting as much or as little dough as I like at a time.
Simply pop in the fridge and allow to defrost overnight, or leave at room temperature for 5 hours. If you freeze one huge ball of dough without portioning it out, it will of course take much longer to defrost.

How To Make Ahead & Store
To Make Ahead:
The prepared gluten-free naan bread dough can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. That way, you can bake them fresh every day as and when needed. However, since the dough is gluten-free, it will dry out a bit.
The dough is also freezer friendly for up to 3 months and can be thawed overnight in the fridge before using. You can freeze as smaller, portioned sections for faster freezing/thawing.
These gluten-free naans are best eaten immediately while warm for the best crispy, fluffy texture. However, feel free to keep leftovers in an airtight container for between 2-3 days .
Reheat the naan in the oven for 5-8 minutes at 200C/ 390F until warmed and slightly crisp, or place back in the skillet for a few minutes .
Using a microwave will lose its crisp exterior, so its not recommended.
The cooked bread is also freezer-friendly for up to 3 months and can be reheated from frozen at 200C/ 390F for 10-15 minutes.
Roll Out Gluten Free Naan On Parchment
My daughter wisely put a sheet of parchment paper on the counter and that worked very well for removing the naan flatbread without it breaking. You can either use a roller or just pat them flat. Scoop out 2-3 inch balls of dough and flatten with roller or your hand. If the dough seems sticky, add another layer of parchment and a little cassava flour over the dough to keep the flatbread from sticking to your hands or the roller. My daughter used a roller and dusted it with cassava flour before rolling out. This worked out well and she was able to roll them out into thin sheets. When I made them another day, I just dusted my hands and flattened them. Both methods worked well although her flatbreads were a little thinner than mine. Do not let this step intimidate you it is very easy!
Make sure to separate the uncooked flatbread sheets with parchment as you roll them out. If you are not ready to cook them yet, refrigerate them. I have not tried freezing them, but am sure it would work well and you can have the uncooked naan ready to fry whenever you want it.

How To Freeze These Naan
These gluten-free naan freeze wonderfully, and I love to cook double the amount and then freeze half for later. Heres how to freeze them:
- Wrap them in the cloth used to keep them warm.
- Place them inside an airtight container, large ziplock bag, or even a plastic grocery bag.
- Once ready to to use, place the naan only on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 60 seconds, or until heated through.
If youd like to prepare the dough ahead of time, simply cover and refrigerate for 1-2 days. Then add a bit of water to soften and cook the naan as you normally would.
Can I Make This Recipe Without Xanthan Gum
As I said, theres a little xanthan gum in self-raising flour already that will help to replace the gluten in regular flour. So in a sense, yes you can skip adding more xanthan gum, though I always make mine with it just to be safe. It really helps the texture!
But if you wanted to make this with gluten free plain flour and no xanthan gum, then youre on your own I wouldnt recommend it!

- You could optionally add a teaspoon of nigella seeds/black onion seeds to the batter for the authentic Indian bread naan flavor.
- Keep the gluten-free flatbread covered with a tea towel to keep them warm and fresh before serving.
- If you prefer the Indian flatbread to be crispy, I recommend cooking it without a lid. For a softer, and flexible bread, cook it with a lid.
- To make stuffed naan from this recipe, you can either roll the dough out thinner, spread the filling, and then fold it over and seal the dough. OR divide the dough into two pieces and roll into the same shape, then top one with the filling and then top with the other piece of dough and seal. Then fry as usual .
- For a low FODMAP version, you can use garlic-infused olive oil rather than garlic. Make sure to use a low-FODMAP flour blend . Use a plain, low-FODMAP yogurt too.
- Make a sweet Peshwari naan by adding 1-2 tbsp of shredded coconut and some finely diced dried apricot to the dough before baking. You may need an additional tbsp or so of yogurt.

Yall, this Gluten Free Yeast Free Naan Bread is just as soft and tender as the yeast version. It can be made in half the time, and uses ingredients commonly found in your pantry and fridge!
I might have found my new favorite quick bread! Seriously, this bread is perfect! Soft and pillowy, tears like real naan bread, has endless uses, is sooooo easy, and is just plain yummy!!
Ive made gluten free naan bread with yeast many times before and still do when I want that yeasty flavor. But sometimes we either cant get our hands on yeast or we dont have time to mess with it .
Soft Gluten Free Naan
Naan is luscious Indian flatbread, similar to a tortilla, but thicker. With one simple alteration, you can roll or pat them out thinner to use as tortillas. The flavor and texture are so good that they should be a sin to eat. By far, this gluten free naan is my most raved about recipe. People liken them to their gluten counterpart. Naan is full of possibilities.
There are two types of naan. One is closer to a bread texture and the other is soft. This is a soft gluten free naan recipe.
The story behind the recipe:
A little over a year ago, I picked up some Indian food for my husband while I was caring for my father. As I took the naan out of the bag I wanted to cry, I wanted some so badly! Putting it mildly, I was jealous. Creating a soft gluten free naan seemed hopeless at the time. After promising everyone that I would experiment with a recipe, I just had to give it a go.
My husband loved the first batch I created. Yeah! I can have my own gluten free naan! The only regret was that I only made half of a batch. You can make this in a cast iron skillet, as I did, at first. However, it is absolutely incredible made on a pizza stone . The temperature traditional naan is cooked at is 800°F. Therefore, 500 to 600°F would be best.

Fry In Olive Oil Or Ghee
I used olive oil to fry the gluten free naan in a cast iron skillet. Olive oil contains lots of antioxidants and has many health benefits as discussed in this article. Olive oil consumption is not linked to obesity, but has been shown to reduce your chance of heart disease, strokes and cancer. However, if you want a more buttery flavor, use ghee.
Heat the oil or ghee in a pan on medium heat. Carefully transfer the naan to the pan and cook until golden on both sides this should take 3-5 minutes per side. Serve immediately with your favorite curry and enjoy soaking up the delicious sauce.
What Yoghurt Should I Use For This Recipe
Its totally up to you I like to keep this vegan and dairy free so I used Koko dairy free plain yoghurt. It also has no high FODMAP ingredients in it.
But if you dont mind it being NOT dairy free or vegan, feel free to use plain natural yoghurt or greek yoghurt too.
Lactose free plain yoghurt is the best for the elimination phase of the low FODMAP diet.
