Are All Teas Gluten

Traditional black and green teas are made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant which is inherently gluten-free. So, given that statement, one would assume all tea is gluten-free. However, through the processing and packaging of tea, gluten-derived sources are introduced through sweeteners , flavoring, cross-contamination with other sweetened/flavored teas, as well a form of wheat-based paste used to seal some tea bags.

Making Iced Tea From Loose Leaf Teas

The blends I selected seemed so interesting and delectable. I am especially taking advantage of drinking these gluten-free loose teas on ice because the heat here in Austin is relentless.

The general rule for making hot tea is 1 teaspoon tea per 1 cup water. Steep for 3-5 minutes in boiling water.

To make the iced tea, I place about 3 teaspoons of loose leaf tea into a tea infuser so it is a little more concentrated. Then I bring about 2 cups filtered water to a boil in a very small saucepan. Steep the tea for about 5 minutes, remove the infuser then let it cool down a bit. Pour it over ice in my Yeti tumbler to keep it nice and cold!

So refreshing, delicious and flavorful without any calories or sugar added . All of the teas I ordered were decaf so I could enjoy them any time of the day without worrying about the caffeine.

Then my husband wanted in on the flavored iced teas, too so we bought a larger teapot.

They also sell cold brew iced tea pouches that can be brewed in a pitcher of water overnight. I tried a sample pouch of the Wild Strawberry Iced Tea that we cold brewed in the fridge and it was wonderful, too. Very mild and fruity.

We are hooked. I loved all of the tea blends. And there are so many more I want to try now!

So here are the decaf gluten-free loose leaf teas that I tried with links to the Adagio Teas website.

Davids Tea Haul | Healthy Iced Tea Gluten Free Vegan

Cheryl from Victoria, BC asks The Celiac Scene: Would you be in a position to please recommend any black or herbal teas that are safe for a celiac . My daughter has been drinking Red Rose black tea and after phoning the company, we found out they are GF, but no guarantee of no cross contamination.

We went straight to Professor Google and were similarly assured by Tetley Teas FAQ page:

Q. What if I suffer from celiac disease?

A. Celiac disease is not an allergy or a food intolerance but an autoimmune disease caused by an intolerance to gluten. Authorities have defined a gluten free level below which an intolerance reaction is not triggered. All our products that do not intentionally contain wheat or gluten can therefore be considered gluten free. If we were to find traces of gluten above the gluten free level, these would be mentioned under the ingredient list in a May contain statement.

Q. What if I am allergic to wheat?

A.Consumers allergic to wheat, should consult with their doctor to obtain medical and dietary advice since we cannot guarantee the absolute absence of wheat cross contamination in our product due to its agricultural origin.

Honeybush Banana Nut Tea

This blend is made with honeybush tea, apple pieces, cinnamon bark, cocoa nibs, natural banana flavor, natural chestnut flavor, and marigold flowers.

Honeybush tea is cultivated in South Africas Eastern Cape region. Its name comes from the flowers on the bush, which smell like honey. Is Your Tea Gluten

Years ago, when I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I assumed all tea was gluten-free. It was the one beverage that I drank every day and I didnt even give it a second thought that it may not be gluten-free. Its made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. How could it not be gluten-free? I enjoyed it at coffee shops, and I loved to try different brands and blends of tea throughout my travels. When my celiac lab tests were still not in the normal range after months of adhering to a gluten-free diet, I sat down and thought there must be something that I am ingesting every day that is not overtly affecting my digestive system but contributing to the fact that I could not get my lab test results back within the normal range. Hmmm, could it be the tea I enjoy every morning?

After doing some research, I learned that not all tea is gluten-free.

Recently, I used my Nima Sensor to test a brand that I enjoyed regularly, both at home and at my local coffee shop, and found that it was indeed NOT gluten-free! The website that I purchased the loose-leaf tea from explicitly stated that their black tea was gluten-free. Well, yes, the tea leaves are gluten-free but they also manufacture tea that is not gluten-free in their facility and this particular tea was possibly subject to cross-contamination.

I have since reached out to this company, and they were VERY apologetic and stated that they would speak to their marketing team and remove that statement from their website.
