With the U.S. launch of Promise Gluten Free, consumers looking for celiac-safe breads will no longer be restricted to the freezer aisle or required to choose between tasteless loaves without structural integrity or more flavorful and chewy options that are also higher-fat and -sugar.

The line includes a white bread, multigrain loaf and a chia and millet option.

Promise Gluten Free is based in Ireland and has long sold its products in the United Kingdom and Australia. It is just now starting to sell in the United States. Products are available in Safeway/Albertsons in Washington state and in Shaws in Boston. Company officials said they are in talks with Whole Foods and Safeways in other areas of the United States.

Less Flour More Power: Promise Gluten

Irish bakers with a half-century of history behind them are promising to bring some serious flour power to the United States.

Earlier this year, Promise Gluten Free started selling its celiac-safe loaves in select stores in Washington state and Boston, Massachusetts, with plans to add more regions and retailers in 2020.

The move follows the Ireland-based businesss successful expansion into other countries like Australia and, most recently, Canada. Founded 51 years ago, the business started selling gluten-free bread in 2012.

We started playing around with recipes for gluten-free bread, in particular, Promise Gluten Free co-founder Tom Doyle told Gluten-Free Living. Our motivation being trying to produce a gluten-free bread that tasted as good as regular, wheat-based bread, but nutritionally was even better than regular bread.

At the time, the competition was lacking, says Doyle.

Gluten-free breads fell into two categories. Either they tasted awful, were dry, dense and would fall apart if you tried to butter them orsome of the newer breads were maybe a bit better tasting and less prone to falling apart.

However, the better-tasting bread wasnt necessarily better for you.

Manufacturers were achieving that taste by loading the breads with fat and sugar, which improved the moisture of the bread, but nutritionally that turned the bread into junk food, says Doyle.

Promise Gluten Free was founded in 2011 by Declan Gallagher, Tom Doyle and Ciarán Lally and is said to have experienced rapid growth both domestically and internationally.

It specializes in producing breads suitable for celiacs under retail brands Promise Gluten Free and PureBred Gluten Free. It sells to more than 1,000 stores in Australia, as well as the US, Ireland and the UK in major retailers like Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys, Spar, Woolworths and Tesco.

Promise recently won a contract to supply gluten-free bread to 10,000 outlets in Canada.

Expanding global footprint

According to Gallagher, MEPs backing will provide Promise Gluten Free the impetus to accelerate its international expansion strategy.

Plans are in place to further develop Promises physical presence in the US and European markets to meet fast-growing demand, he said.

The global market for gluten-free products market is projected to reach $7.59bn by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 10.4% from 2015, forecasts MarketsandMarkets.

The market researcher expects the European region to be the fastest-growing market owing to the health concerns in the region.

The incidence of coeliac diseases and gluten intolerance has risen considerably over the last few decades, however, the trend has benefited from broader audience trying to avoid gluten for health reasons.

The word BREAD can strike anxiety, disgust and a slew of other thoughts in anyone who suffers from gluten sensitivity. Thus I was extremely skeptical when I was invited to try a range of products from Promise Gluten Free.

Since my celiac diagnosis a decade ago I have pretty much avoided bread. Bun for my vegie burger = lettuce. Sandwiches have turned into wraps using corn tortillas . In reality, sandwiches have turned into salads

I have to be honest, the first loaf I opened was the lemon cake! It was delicious! Lemony and sweet perfect with my afternoon tea.

Second was the Rustic White Loaf OMG it felt like bread! It smelled like bread! It tasted like bread straight out of the package no toasting required! If you are celiac and have been around the bread scene for more than a day then you know ALL gluten free bread requires toasting to be edible

I ate this loaf raw, toasted, turned into a grilled cheese , and made croutons out of the ends and the last couple slices that went stale. Impressed by all. I DO NOT impress easily.

Overall, choosing products that have been certified gluten-free can give you peace of mind about the safety of your bread.

Depending on the type of toppings and fillings you plan on using, you may also want to look for breads that are higher in fiber and protein.
