Homemade Pie Crust Is Easy To Make

BEST EVER Homemade Healthy Apple Pie | Vegan, Gluten Free, No Sugar Added Filling!

Traditional Pie crust is usually made of flour, butter, a bit of sugar, water and a pinch of salt. To make this Pie crust dairy-free, I use vegan butter. I assure you, the result will be the same and as delicious as using regular butter. You will not notice the difference. I prefer making the pastry myself, but you can also use store-bought pastry dough to make this recipe.

Gluten Free Vegan Apple Crumble Pie

This Apple Crumble Pie is gluten free, vegan, and FULL of apple cinnamon goodness. It features my healthier gluten free pie crust, a mix of sweet and tart apples, and an oat/almond flour topping!

I dont know about you, but I prefer my apple pie with a crumble topping. There is just something so fun and delicious about it! And when an apple crumble pie gets paired with some non-dairy vanilla ice cream, forget it! So, so good.

Now, for this Gluten Free Vegan Apple Crumble Pie, I use my pie crust, but you could also turn this into an apple crisp by forgetting the pie crust entirely. Or use a store bought vegan pie crust to make it really easy. Ill leave it up to you. ð

Lets do this!

First, make this Gluten Free Pie Crust.

Make the apple filling by tossing the ingredients together in a large bowl. Let those sit while the oven pre-heats and you make the crumble topping.

Spoon the apples into the prepared crust, sprinkle the crumble topping on, and bake for 45-55 minutes. Use a pie crust shield or make your own like this.

Easy peasy. Make sure you leave enough time to let the pie cool , as the filling will thicken considerably as it cools and make it a lot easier to slice and serve.

I highly recommend serving with non-dairy vanilla ice cream. I like Trader Joes Soy Vanilla and So Delicious Cashew Vanilla. But choose your favorite. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family does!

What Pie Dish Do I Use For Mini Apple Pies

Contrary to some popular mini apple pie recipes on the web, I wanted to be a bit more diverse and actually make mini apple pies that are closer to mini apple tarts. That way, they truly look like a miniature version of an able pie, and its a bit better on the apple filling to pie crust ratio.

A lot of people use muffin tins, but I recommend miniature tart pans. You can find them at Crate & Barrell, Home Goods, and Amazon.

How Do You Make Allspice

If you were to smell allspice, it would smell like a combination of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pepper. Despite the many recipes online for making homemade allspice, its actually not a mixture of spices at all. According to this article by The Spruce Eats, allspice is a spice made from the dried berries of a plant known as Pimenta dioica. The berries resemble black peppercorns! To make the ground allspice that is sold in stores, the berries are picked from the tree before they are ripe, dried, and ground up. This is a spice I recommend everyone having on hand in their spice cabinet, as you can use it to make other homemade spice mixtures. However, if you ever find yourself without it, you can always make a mixture that mimics the taste by combining equal parts ground cloves, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. I might also toss in a very small amount of finely ground black pepper.

How To Make Ahead & Store

Vegan Apple Pie with Streusel

To make ahead:

Prepare the dough and filling roll out the vegan pie crust into the tin and leave the streusel crumbles in a bowl covered with cling film. Leave the apple pie filling in a separate bowl, covered, and leave everything to chill in the fridge up to a day in advance. When youre ready to bake the gluten-free apple pie, add the filling and topping to the pie tin and bake.

You may need to add an extra couple of minutes to the baking time as it was chilled.

To store the gluten-free apple pie:

Store any leftovers of this vegan pie on the counter, covered, for 2-3 days or in the refrigerator for up to 6 days.

You can also freeze the cooked and sliced vegan apple pie for between 3-4 months, though the texture of the dough/streusel may slightly change.

When you want to eat it, allow the apple crumble pie to thaw on the counter or in the fridge then reheat in the oven until warmed through.

What Makes This Pie Better Than Regular Pies

Pie crusts are kind of my nemesis. They often fail, theyre messy, and I find that unless theyre a cookie crust, they usually dont even taste good.

And when it comes to gluten-free pie crusts, a lot are soggy. No, thanks! These caramel apple pies are an exception. Their oatmeal cookie crust is amazing!

So I am all about this crustless apple pie. You just combine the apples with the spices and sugar, put them in the pie pan, and then pour the topping over the apples.

Most Swedish fruit pies Ive had didnt have any spice but because Im me, I added cinnamon and cardamom. Scandinavians love their cardamom and so do I! It belongs in this pie.

If apples arent your thing, any kind of fruit can likely be used, though youll probably want to adjust the amount of sugar and spices! Part of the beauty of this recipe is that its really hard to mess up.

How To Make Gf + Vegan Apple Crump Pie

So ready to learn how to make this spectacular pie? Let’s get into it!

  • Make the crumb topping. I like to make the crumb topping first because that can wait the longest. To make it, you just add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix it all together.
  • Prepare the apples. Next up, the apples. Peel, core and slice your apples. I like to keep them on the thick side so they hold their texture as they bake. Look for apples that are crispy I love macoun, honey crisp and gala apples. Then you’ll add them into a bowl with some cinnamon, lemon juice and two products form Bob’s Red Mill: coconut sugar and arrowroot starch .
  • Make the crust. Finally we’ll make the crust. I do this in the food processor I just add everything into the food processor and blitz it up. Once the butter is almost at a sandy texture, I pulse in the water a bit at a time until a dough forms.
  • Roll out the crust. You’ll form the pie dough into a ball and then place it between two sheets of parchment. Roll it out to be about 1/8 thick.
  • Put it all together. Flip the crust into your 9 pie dish and kind of push it into the corners and up the sides. Crimp the edges with your fingers and remove any excess dough. Then add your apples and finish it off with your crumb topping.
  • Bake it up! We’ll bake this for about an hour until the crust and topping are both golden brown and you can hear the apples bubbling. If the pie begins to brown too quickly, you can cover it with some foil.

Cover The Apple Pie With A Lattice Design

As mentioned before, you can either cover the Apple pie filling with the whole pastry dough or cutting into strips to make a lattice design. After laying the pastry strips on top of the apple pie filling, trim the overhanging dough around the edges and carefully, crimp the top and bottom of the pastry a bit together. I love using any leftover pastry to make decorations for the pie because its so pretty. Just shape the remaining dough into a ball, roll out again and cut out designs of choice using a cookie cutter . Place them on top of the crust and brush the top with a little plant-based milk/ cream or melted coconut oil. Then sprinkle with a bit of brown sugar and bake until golden brown. Thats it!

I hope youll enjoy this simple Vegan Apple Pie. It is:

    • Dairy-free
    • Can be made gluten-free and refined sugar-free
    • Easy to make
    • The perfect dessert for fall, winter and any occasion!

VEGAN APPLE PIE Recipe – Homemade, Irresistible & Gluten-Free

Is there anything more classic than an apple pie made from scratch and just out of the oven?

Seriously, I mean, I hope someone is starting to understand my deep love for all things fall! Recently, Jared and I went apple picking and basically came home with the whole orchard.

So naturally, there was no better time to share my favorite fruit pie of all time. I cant believe Im just sharing this recipe too, because truth be told, Ive been making it for about 9 years nowI know, thats longer than Id like to admit!

Swedish Apple Pie Super Quick + Easy

This Swedish apple pie is similar to a crisp and has an amazingly easy topping. Its my most-requested Thanksgiving dessert and as a bonus, can easily be made gluten-free, vegan and dairy-free. Its perfect with ice cream, vanilla sauce or custard on top.

When I google Swedish apple pie, I see a lot of recipes that dont resemble the Swedish pie that I know. Theyre all missing oats!

And texture. So heres my version.

Ive mentioned this before, but I was an exchange student twice in Sweden and have gone back for lots of visits during the summer. This has resulted in me eating lots of Swedish pies.

And lots of Swedish pancakes, kladdkaka , and pepparkakor .

I have so much love and nostalgia for all things Swedish. Whenever I make this pie or the kladdkaka I mentioned above, which I make quite often, I feel all warm and fuzzy.

What Are The Best Apples To Use In Pie

For the best pie, I like to choose a variety of apples. At least one tart variety and one sweet. This creates complex flavors that keep you coming back bite after bite!

Here are some common sweet apples:

    • Jonagold my favorite!
    • Empire
    • Cortland

I like to choose 50% of the apples from the sweet column and 50% from the tart.

This vegan apple pie contains no dairy in either crust or filling. It will be okay sitting at room temperature for a few hours, but overall, its best stored in the refrigerator. Simply cover your pie with plastic wrap and refrigerate until youre ready to serve.

I hope you enjoy this gf apple pie as much as my family does! Mgan

Gluten Free Apple Pie Crumble Topping

    Vegan Apple Pie With Streusel

The thing with Dutch Apple Pie that sets it apart is the crumb / streusel topping. There are tons of variations on this recipe out there, but today Im sharing my method.

Start working on your crumble topping after you placed your crust in the oven.

In the same food processor you used for the pie crust combine all topping ingredients and pulse a few times until the mixture is well combined and looks crumbly.

And youre done! Place the container in the freezer until is ready to use.

    A Perfect + Flakey Gluten

The key to any good pie starts with the crust. My goal with this recipe was to create a flakey gluten-free pie crust that was easy to make and was also vegan and dairy-free.

For the easy part I decided to choose my favorite gluten-free flour blend. The Gluten-Free 1-to-1 Flour from Bob’s Red Mill is the absolute best! It’s got an amazing texture, it’s really light, it can be used as a 1:1 substitute for traditional all-purpose flour in most recipes AND it works perfectly in this pie crust.

I actually opted to follow the proportions in their gluten-free pie crust recipe and just swapped a few of the ingredients:

    • Gluten-Free 1-to-1 Flour: as I said this is my favorite GF flour blend. It’s so awesome in this pie crust!
    • Sea salt: you always need a little salt in your baking it really helps bring out all the flavors!
    • Vegan butter: we’re swapping traditional butter with vegan butter. Make sure you’re getting the vegan butter sticks and that it’s as cold as possible .
    • Cold water: just a few tablespoons of super cold water will help bring the dough together and keep the butter chilled .

And that’s all you need for the crust!

Does This Homemade Apple Pie Taste Healthy

Not in the slightest. In fact, youd never know that this was a vegan apple pie, nor a gluten free apple pie.

Ive actually been making this particular recipe since high school , and its one that I always come back to.

I promise that none of your guests, nor you, will know that this healthy apple pie is indeed vegan and gluten free .

Its all in the easy apple pie filling. Not to mention, the crust is so flaky, no one will know this apple pie is vegan.
