Mock Udis Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread Recipe

Udis Gluten Free Sausage Breakfast Sandwich Review

If you havent heard of Udis gluten free bread, youre missing out on a great textured gluten free bread that is also dairy-free. However, if youre into gluten free baking or avoiding processed food, this recipe may help you. It is the softest gluten free bread I have made thus far, and works wonderful for sandwich bread, as well as kid-friendly. It turns out a decent sized slice, and when the crust cools it softens like gluten sliced sandwich bread.

My first attempt at creating bread like Udis Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread turned out delicious, but I had to cut off the ends of the bread to allow the steam to escape so it would not continue to cave in on the sides and bottom. I continued to improve upon this recipe and finally achieved a good result.

Udis gluten free bread contains evaporated cane juice in addition to the natural sweeteners. Sugar makes gluten free bread soft, especially when rewarmed. In addition, it feeds the yeast. You may skip the evaporated cane juice, if desired, as the the molasses and brown rice syrup were enough to proof the yeast, but feel free to add some, as the more sugar you use, the softer the bread. When viewing the order of the Udis ingredients the evaporated cane juice is pretty high on the list, meaning the quantity is pretty high, though I only suggest 2 teaspoons.

As I try different methods that turn out well, I will update this recipe.

Gluten Free White Bread

I reviewed the plainest variety of each bread I could find. In most cases, thats the white bread variety. Sometimes, the whole grain variety was the one I could get my hands on fastest.

Ive included as much detail as possible about each brand, including price , availability, ingredients and other allergens.

Please dont rely upon this information for matters of health, though. Its just for reference, and ingredients change. Always check your labels!

Every bread in this post holds its shape, can be separated when frozen or fresh, tastes relatively good and is worth a try. Some are more expensive than others, but in my personal experience , none of them crumble or fall apart in that sad, sad way we all know and hate.

Why Im Reviewing Packaged Gluten Free Bread

Udi’s Uncured Pepperoni Pizza – Gluten Free Reviews

If youre on my email list, I asked you what your favorite brands are, and you poured your gluten-avoiding hearts out! Ive been through many loaves of bread. If it was a total dud , Im not reviewing it here.

My intention in publishing these reviews is not to stir up controversy, harm anyones business or even support anyones business to be honest. When I posted something on my Facebook page about how Udis bread is hard to separate, someone angrily accused me of endangering their business.

Clearly, that isnt my purposebut I also have no obligation to pretend that reality isnt what it is. My intention is simple. I want to help you, the consumer, spend your money wisely.

Packaged gluten free products are more expensive than conventional products, and always will be. The market for these products is smaller, and the ingredients are more expensive .

But weve come a long way since 2004 when my family first went gluten free. Back then, we ordered some bizarre gluten free packaged bread from Canada that not only couldnt be eaten untoasted but lost its toast within minutes. And the cost was insane. Well, weve come a long, long way since then.

Everyone knows that I love baking fresh homemade gluten free bread. My children adore it when they have it for their school lunches, and my husband loves it because its cheaper.

That isnt the stuff really of my dreams, but it is of theirs. But its just not realistic.

What Is The Very Best Gluten Free Bread

As you probably know, people who are intolerant to gluten have fewer options when it comes to buying bread.

Most people take for granted the dozens of different kinds of bread available at their local grocery store, but if you’re following a strict gluten free diet, there aren’t as many choices.

Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t find some pretty amazing loaves out there. I’ve put together a list of the best three brands of gluten free bread and where to buy them.

Udis Gluten Free Whole Grain Sandwich Bread

The most readily available gluten-free bread on the market, Udis never disappoints. It holds up well to sandwiches and tastes as close to normal bread that I have come across. Its easy to find in a lot of grocery stores and Costco, but the size of bread does run on the small side.

This brand offers other varieties that are gluten and dairy-free too, including:

  • Udis Hearty Sprouted Grains Artisan Bread
  • Udis Hearty Seeds & Grains Artisan Bread
  • Udis Delicious Soft White Sandwich Bread
  • Udis Cinnamon Raisin Bread
  • Udis Omega Flax & Fiber Bread
  • Udis Millet-Chia Bread
  • Udis Whole Grain Sandwich Bread

These are the ingredients in Udis gluten-free whole grain sandwich bread:

Water, tapioca starch, brown rice flour, canola oil, dried egg whites, cane sugar, tapioca maltodextrin, tapioca syrup, sorghum flour, less than 2% of: rice starch, sorghum grain, flax seed meal, apple cider vinegar, gum blend , apple fiber, molasses, salt, yeast, amaranth flour, teff flour, cultured brown rice, locust bean gum, enzymes.

What Bread Is Gluten Free

There are many options for buying gluten free sandwich bread at the store. In addition to national brands that you can now find throughout the country, like Udis and Schar, there are also numerous small manufacturers that sell to only certain regions.

After polling you, my readers, and doing a bit of research and taste-testing myself, I think there are the best store bought gluten free bread options:

  • Trader Joes sliced Italian

Can You Freeze Gluten Free Bread

Udi

Yes, you can store gluten free bread in the freezer, whether youve made it yourself or bought it at the store.

The trick to freezing gluten free bread so that it remains edible after defrosting is to tightly wrap it so that it doesnt freezer burn. Also make sure that your bread is cool when you pop it into the freezer, otherwise condensation that later freezes will have you fighting to separate slices.

Because gluten performs a number of functions in bread doughsuch as binding, elasticity, structure, and moisture retentionwhen it isnt present there need to be replacement ingredients that will mimic these functions. Therefore, the ingredient list for gluten-free baked goods will contain some that may be unexpected. However, there are also ingredients that are found in regular bread, so dont be alarmed by the several multi-syllabic words that you may have never heard of.

Otherwise, the ingredient list includes tapioca starch, brown rice flour, teff flour, flax seed meal, and potato starch to replace the regular wheat flour. It also contains yeast, egg whites, and baking powder and soda to assist in leavening, and the xanthan gum is a common additive that helps in binding ingredients together. Also on the list are canola oil, sugar, apple cider vinegar, salt, and cornstarch.

A serving of Udis gluten-free multigrain bread is 140 calories, 4 1/2 g total fat, 0 saturated/trans fat, 0 cholesterol, 24 g carbs, 3 g sugar, 1 g fiber, and 2 g protein.

Is Potato Bread Gluten Free

Potato bread is made from potatoes and flour, which include wheat. It may be best to avoid this type of bread if you have a severe sensitivity to gluten.

However, you can always make your own potato bread at home that contains no gluten. Potato bread gets its name because it uses potatoes as an ingredient instead of traditional grains like wheat or rye.

The best types of gluten free bread are the ones where you can clearly tell that it’s 100% free of any gluten. This means that it should be made with only gluten free ingredients and not have any residue of wheat in the final product.

If you see ‘wheat flour’ or ‘enriched wheat flour’ on the label, you know that the bread, unfortunately, contains gluten.

Sticking to a strict diet can seem difficult, but once you find brands that make great gluten-free products, it’s much easier to enjoy deliciously healthy meals!

Final Thoughts On Jersey Mikes Gluten Free Subs

To summarize, we really enjoyed our Jersey Mikes gluten free sub sandwich. We have a variety of options to eat, as all except two of the meat options are gluten-free. They took many good precautions in making our sandwich. I would prefer that separate toppings be set aside for those needing gluten-free. This is because any crumb of gluten is problematic for one with Celiac Disease. As Jersey Mikes continues their certification process, I imagine that the process will become even better. While the bread is $3 more for the large sandwich, I believe this is totally reasonable as they continue to talk precautions to keep us safe.

If you go to a location and have concerns about your service, please feel free to contact Jersey Mikes corporate office. If you go to any restaurant that has been certified by GFFS, and have concerns, feel free to contact them as well. For those without a Jersey Mikes in their area, Erbert and Gerbert also serves gluten-free subs with similar precautions.

Have you eaten a Jersey Mikes gluten free sub? How was your experience? Please share your comments below!

**I was not paid or compensated in any way for this meal. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Please always ask questions at any restaurant establishment, regardless of my review.**
