This recipe is made with gluten free bread flour, which is made by adding whey protein isolate and Expandex modified tapioca starch to Better Batter gluten free flour or my mock Better Batter blend.

Baking bread with even my favorite all purpose gluten free flour blend, Better Batter, is used to make batter-style gluten free bread, like our gluten free white sandwich bread. That sort of gluten free bread dough doesnt look or behave anything like conventional yeast bread when its raw or even when its baking.

Baking with gluten free bread flour is an experience much more like what you might expect when youre baking conventional yeast bread. The dough isnt overly wet like the batter-style of bread. I

How To Make Bagels Is Rather Simple After That

    Tips To Making The Perfect Bagels When Making From Scratch

    • Do not over mix the dough. Its best if you use a fork while mixing it together. Itll help combine quicker then if using a spoon which can sometimes can over mix the dough.
    • Whip your egg before adding to the dough.
    • How long to bake those bagels? Depending on the size of your bagels and oven the outside may be cooked but the inside slightly uncooked. The best way I found to avoid this from happening is cooking with the information below and if they are slightly uncooked place them back into the oven with the temperature off on the bottom oven rack. Allow them to sit in there for about 5-10 minutes. This should help bake them chewy on the inside and a browned inside without burning.

    How To Store Homemade Bagels

    I recommend storing these bagels in an airtight sealed bag. When youre sealing the bag, squeeze out all of the air so that your bagels stay extra fresh.

    You can either refrigerate your bagels for up to 5 days or freeze them for up to 3 months.

    To reheat, simply toast them or bake them for a few minutes in the oven!

    What To Serve On Your Bagels

    I personally love a smear of vegan cream cheese. My favorite vegan cream cheese to use is Kite Hill.

    However, if you want a sweeter route, I highly recommend smearing a pat of vegan butter and sprinkling with a bit of cinnamon, sea salt, and a drizzle of maple syrup! My favorite vegan butter to use here is Forager Project.

    If youre not nut-free, you can also use almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter, or the like. Even coconut butter would be lovely!

    What Makes A Gf Bagel Not Just A Roll With A Hole

    Although they dont have to rise before they go in the oven, these bagels do indeed have to be boiled in a molasses bath after shaping and before baking.

    No boiling, no bagels. Its as simple as that.

    Im from New York and youre just going to have to trust me. If you want an actual bagel and not just a roll with a hole, set some water to boil and nobody gets hurt.

    Gluten Free Dairy Free Bagels

    How To Make A Healthy & Tasty Gluten-Free Lunch in 5 Minutes

    If youre dairy-free, Im afraid this recipe isnt a good choice. The butter in the recipe can be replaced rather easily with one of the excellent vegan butter substitutes available. My favorites are Miyokos Kitchen and Melt brands.

    But the real issue is the whey protein isolate that forms an important part the gluten free bread flour blend that makes these bagels so authentic. You can try replacing whey protein isolate with rice protein isolate or pea protein isolate, but then you must multiply the water in this recipe by 150% and the dough will never be quite the same.

    Shaping & Boiling The Vegan Bagels

    You might see some people roll the bagel dough into a long cylinder than pinch it together to make it into a bagelthere is a much better way to do this thats actually a lot easier.

    Plus your bagels will look more bagel-y

    Simply divide your proofed dough into 8 even sections. I like to use my pastry cutter. Roll each section into a ball, and lightly press your thumb into the middle of the dough.

    You dont want a gaping hole, or else your bagels will be sort of flimsy. Simply work your fingers around the dough to create a hole less than an inch wide.

    Less is more here.

    Then well boil them! To boil the bagels, simply bring a large pot of water to a boil. Use either a spatula or a large spoon with holes in it for draining, and carefully transfer a bagel into the boiling water. It should float.

    Youll cook the bagel for 1 1/2 minutes on each side, flipping it over with the spatula or spoon. Once cooked, transfer it back to the parchment paper and repeat for the remaining bagels!

    Ingredients For Yeast Free Gluten Free Bagels

    Now, the ingredients to make entirely vegan and gluten free bagels without yeast is similar, but slightly different:

    • Oat flour: you can make your own homemade oat flour, like I did here, or you can purchase store bought. If making your own, youll notice that the bagels look more rustic. If you want the bagels to look more traditional , you can use store bought oat flour, which is finer.
    • Arrowroot powder: I recommend sticking with arrowroot powder here over cornstarch, as cornstarch wont achieve the exact same texture that were going for in gluten free bagels.
    • Baking powder: to help the bagels still rise.
    • Warm water: this will help activate the arrowroot powder.
    • Dairy free yogurt: keep this room temperature as well, so that the arrowroot powder can start to activate before being boiled.

    How To Make Homemade Vegan Bagels

    Making these oil free vegan bagels is a lot easier than you might think! It can be broken down into three basic sections: making the dough, shaping and boiling the bagels, and finally, baking the bagels!

    How To Make Vegan And Gluten Free Bagels Without Yeast

    But what if youre gluten free or dont want to use yeast? Not a problem.

    You can make this vegan bagel recipe completely gluten free and yeast free with just a few changes.

  • Preheat the oven, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and start the process of boiling the water. It will be boiling by the time you finish the dough.
  • Whisk together the dry ingredients. Then add in the wet and mix until the dough is firm and not sticky. If its still sticky, add in some more flour.
  • Then the rest is essentially like making regular bagels! Youl divide the dough into 8 sections, shape them into bagels , boil the bagels, and top!
  • Bake the bagels for 15-18 minutes then serve!

    Piping hot, fresh bagels are kind of like donuts. You dont even realize how much you love them until they suddenly feel beyond reach.

    Just because you cant do that any more doesnt mean you cant have piping hot, fresh bagelseven if you havent planned ahead. Whenever we have a sleepover guest at my house, whether its my niece and nephew or one of my kids friends, I feel like I simply must make a kid-friendly breakfast thats still kind of impressive.

    Chewy + Soft Vegan Bagel Ingredients

    These homemade vegan bagels are entirely oil free, egg free, dairy free, and nut free . Theyre super simple in ingredients so that anyone can make these homemade bagels!

    • Instant yeast: I like to use instant yeast here so that we can make these bagels faster!
    • Warm water: youll need the water to be 110F to properly activate the yeast.
    • Coconut sugar: very similar to brown sugar, which many use to make homemade bagels. I wanted these vegan bagels to be completely refined sugar free though, so we used coconut!
    • Flour: you can use all purpose or bread flour here. Bread flour is recommended over all purpose, but youll still achieve a very good chewy and dense soft vegan bagel.
    • Arrowroot powder: this helps get that chewy texture!
    • Dairy free yogurt: these vegan bagels are completely oil free, but when testing them without the yogurt, I found them to not be as enjoyable. The yogurt adds an extra dense-ness to the bagels that makes them irresistible!
