Combine Keto And Gluten

Why not use keto and gluten-free diet principles to manage celiac disease while staying in ketosis and lowering inflammation.

Doing this is straightforward. You can stay gluten-free while being in ketosis. Simply avoid high-carb foods and stay away from keto baked goods that may contain gluten.

So you arent just managing your celiac disease but feeding your body with foods that reduce your risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimers disease. Youll also notice you feel more energetic, and brain fog is a thing of the past.

Three Types Of Gluten Conditions

The medical community categorizes three types of gluten-related conditions. Those with wheat allergy, celiac disease, and non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

There are three main types of gluten conditions. The most common type is celiac disease, which affects an estimated 1 in 100 people worldwide.

Also known as celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, it is believed that about two-thirds of people with the disease are undiagnosed and not getting the proper treatment.

The second is people with wheat allergies. People who have allergies to wheat will break out into hives, have facial swelling, and even have difficulty breathing if they come in contact with any form of wheat.

It is a serious thing when their antibodies react to the wheat proteins.

The third is people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Individuals with non-celiac gluten/wheat sensitivity have symptoms that are comparable to those of celiac disease, which go away when gluten is avoided. They do not, however, test positive for celiac disease.

Many people who have gluten in their diet but do not test positive for celiac disease experience symptoms comparable to those seen in celiac disease, such as foggy brain, increased sadness, ADHD-like symptoms, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, headaches, bone or joint discomfort, and chronic fatigue.

By definition, a gluten-free diet is one that does not include protein from gluten. Gluten is naturally found in grains like barley, rye, wheat, etc. This diet, used to manage gluten intolerance symptoms, is especially popular among folks who suffer from celiac disease and other health problems associated with gluten.

Following a gluten free diet will change how you incorporate fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients in your meal, so youll need to be wise when choosing substitutes that provide the nutrients necessary for a healthy diet.

Now, there have been other people who tend to avoid gluten in general because of claimed health benefits like: health improvement, weight loss, and an increase in energy levels. This sounds absolutely amazing, but theres very little clinical research done to support these claims for people without gluten intolerance, so youll like need to consult your doctor or dietitian before making any major dietary changes.

What Can We Eat On A Gluten

However, even with limited food choices, there are many gluten-free options now available in markets. It isnt that hard to adopt this diet as long as you keep an eye out for foods labeled with gluten-free or better yet, you can prepare home-cooked meals which will definitely be healthier.

Below are foods that are naturally gluten-free:

  • Fruits and vegetables – All types of fruits and vegetables are naturally gluten-free so eat away!
  • Meats and fish – Avoid battered or coated meats or fish.
  • Dairy – Products such as plain milk, plain yoghurt and plain cheese are gluten-free as long as it does not contain added ingredients.
  • Grain – Rice, buckwheat, quinoa, corn, oats and tapioca, as long as labeled gluten-free.
  • Starches and flour – Potatoes, corn, chickpea flour, potato flour, corn flour, soy flour, tapioca flour and coconut flour.
  • Herbs and spices
  • Spreads and oils – All butter and vegetable oils .

How Do I Know If I Have An Issue With Gluten

If you have chronic problems with diarrhea, bloating, anemia, rashes, and/or fatigue, you should talk to your doctor about screening blood work to test for celiac disease.18 A positive screening test will usually be followed by a visit to the gastroenterologist to discuss doing a biopsy of the small intestine, which is the definitive way to make the diagnosis.

If your screening for celiac disease is negative, but you have many of the same symptoms when eating gluten-containing foods, then you may choose to remove these foods from your diet and wait for your symptoms to fully resolve. Then, slowly reintroduce these foods to see if the symptoms recur. This can be done multiple times. Foods that reliably provoke symptoms should probably be avoided.

Remember, it may be difficult to pinpoint if symptoms are being caused by gluten or some other component of these foods. A series of different food tolerance tests may be your best bet.

For instance, if you do just fine with gluten-containing homemade bread but have symptoms after eating processed gluten-containing products from the store, the main offender may not be gluten. But if you react poorly to both of these, then there is a higher likelihood that gluten could be the problem.

Keto bread is a low carb alternative that has either a fat head dough base or a coconut flour or almond flour base. You can find keto bread in the store, but if you are gluten free, it can be very hard to find options that are both low carb and gluten free. That is why I prefer to make my own- this way, I know that my entire family can enjoy my homemade keto bread! Here are a few options for keto breads you may have seen:

  • Low Carb Tortillas- you can find these in most grocery stores, although they are more expensive than traditional tortillas
  • Zucchini Tortillas these are a great alternative to a traditional tortilla and give you a great serving of veggies!
  • Cheese Wraps cheese wraps are exactly what they sound like- basically a tortilla made of cheese!
  • Lettuce Wraps these are a great healthy option. Omit the tortilla completely and use a leaf of lettuce from your favorite variety!
  • Chaffles chaffles are cheese waffles and are a delicious, low carb option.
