Looking For A Certified Gluten

The controversy continues around whether an alcohol, or distilled spirit, needs to be labeled as gluten-free. Friends of our site probably wont be shocked by the introduction of the countrys first gluten-free brand of vodka. After all, Americans now spend more than $6 billion a year on gluten-free products, and nearly a third of all Americans say theyre trying to cut back on gluten. Dozens of new gluten-free products are released every month, so why should vodka be any different?

Well, namely because theres a raging debate as to whether a distilled spirit actually contains gluten, regardless of its origin.

Many believe that vodka should be different from products like cookies and English muffins because vodka, unlike cookies and English muffins, is naturally gluten-free. All distilled liquors are gluten-free, even if theyre made from grains, like wheat, barley and rye, that contain gluten due to the distillation process.

The process of distillation separates substances that are volatile from those that are not volatile, gluten expert Tricia Thompson explained. Protein, including gluten, is not volatile and it does not vaporize. Therefore, in a proper distillation, you will not have protein in that final distillate.

Do you agree?

These specialty vodkas are quite possibly the best options when it comes to trying to find the perfect gluten free vodka for you to enjoy.

If youre allergic to gluten or Celiac, youve probably already known that you cant drink most normal vodkas mainly because they have been distilled from glutenous grains.

To some, it may seem like there are little to no options left.

But thankfully youre in luck because there are actually a number of grain-free vodkas for you to enjoy.

But just remember

Hangar 1 is the brainchild of St. George Spirits Lance Winters, who set out to create the first-ever flavored vodka line. He ended up making Hangar 1, a brand now known for its unusually flavored vodkas . Now a Proximo Spirits brand, each batch is made with a combination of pot-distilled Viognier grapes and column-distilled wheat in a repurposed aircraft hangar in San Francisco.

One of the best flavors of the bunch is Buddhas Hand, a quirky cousin of the lemon. While many flavored vodkas on the market are packed with sugary flavors, the purified lemon extracts from the fragrant citron combined with jasmine, basil, and apricots that will make you rethink flavored vodkas forever.

An amazingly simple vodka infusion would be to cut up some pineapple and let it soak for a few days. It will impart a very nice fruit tone that can be enjoyed neat, or mixed into a fun cocktail, recommends Dylan Alpaugh, general manager of Sophias Lounge.
