Most of the time onion rings are made with regular flour and are therefore not gluten free. Occasionally you can find frozen onion rings that are gluten free, or if you’re very lucky you know of a restaurant that serves gluten free onion rings.
Otherwise, making your own is the safest way to enjoy gluten free onion rings.

Tips For Making Gluten Free Onion Rings
Vidalia onions are my favorite for onion rings because they are extra sweet. If you can’t find them, use a regular yellow onion.
Using large onions will ensure that your onion rings are big enough. I don’t usually fry the very centers of the onions, and save those for other recipes.
Cornstarch is needed to keep the batter from sliding right off of the slippery onions. If you prefer you can use arrowroot powder or potato starch.
A wire spider skimmer is a great tool for easily removing fried onion rings from the pan.
While frying, preheat your oven to 275. Keep the onion rings in the warm oven until ready to serve.

I absolutely love a good onion ring. They are savory, salty, crispy, and crunchy, and packed with sweet oniony flavor. There might not be anything better.
Finding a restaurant that serves gluten free onion rings is not the easiest task, so I’ve made my own recipe and I think I’ve broken the code. These are the best gluten free onion rings I’ve ever had.
Probably what makes them so good is that we are making them the traditional way and frying the onion rings in hot oil. Baked onion rings could never compare to this recipe.
Sweet Vidalia onions and some common pantry ingredients come together to make this irresistible fried snack that can be eaten on it’s own or served with burgers for a nostalgic American treat.

These Crispy Gluten Free Onion Rings are better than any take-out Ive ever had, even before having to eat gluten free.
I have decided to quickly share this recipe while the aroma of these deep-fried gems still fills my kitchen.
Yesterday my family and I spent the day at on outdoor amusement park. As we rode the rides, and spun, and spun, and spun our way around the park , the smells of fresh mini doughnuts, cotton candy, and onion rings filled the air.
One smell of those onion rings, and I declared to the family, Were having onion rings for supper!
I had made onion rings before, but that was over 4 years ago. I even shared that recipe for gf onion rings on the blog. And although that recipe was good, having even been published in a Best of Food Blogs Cookbook, my way of using gluten-free flours has changed a lot in the past 4 years.
Getting home from the amusement park, with everyone tired and hungry , I headed to the kitchen to fulfill the onion ring declaration from earlier in the day.
Taking one look at that old recipe, I thought nah, Ill just wing it this time. I no longer use pre-blended flour mixtures, I prefer to use individual flours now.
This recipe was super easy to put together, and stayed a lot crisper than the previous version. It had been over 4 years since I had made these last, but with how perfectly these worked yesterday, I dont think it will be a full four years before we have them again.

Dont Discard The Oil After Frying These Crispy Gluten Free Onion Rings
Did you know that you can reuse your deep-frying oil? Ingredients In Gluten Free Onion Rings
Vidalia Onions – You’ll need to large onions for this recipe. If you can’t find Vidalia onions, large yellow onions will work.
Gluten Free All-Purpose Flour – Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Gluten free Baking Flour is my go to for just about everything.
Baking Powder – This gives our batter air bubbles and makes the onion rings nice and crispy.
Paprika – This red spice adds color and warmth to the onion ring batter.
Salt – Well seasoned onion rings are important. It’s hard to get salt to stick to these after they’re cooked.
Pepper – for a bit of mild heat.
Egg – One egg adds volume to the batter and helps with browning.
Milk – Milk thins out the batter and incorporates all of the flavors together.
Cornstarch – Coat the onions in cornstarch before dipping them in the batter. The starch helps the batter to stick.
Canola Oil – We’ll fry the onion rings on the stove in canola oil. Any light flavored frying oil will work.

If there is a food indulgence that I miss the mostits being able to eat onion rings. I mean, there are few things as amazing as biting into a savory, salty, fried ring of vegetable goodness. Sure, its not healthy, but its been ages since Ive had good onion rings.
I have, on occasion, made a batter, thick-sliced an onion, poured oil into a pan and made my ownbut thats a lot of hassle. And I always make way too many and my roommate and I eat them all and then feel like we just ate the entire State Fair afterwards. Needless to say, I havent made gluten-free onion rings in a very, very long while.
Then, while out at Raisin Rack this past Halloween weekend, I was filling up a basket with gluten-free treats, when my roommate comes skipping over and drops a sack of something into the basket. Lo and beholdit was gluten-free onion rings.
The gluten-free angels sang and a heavenly light shown down from the fluorescent lights of the natural food store.
Ians Natural Products is the creator of the Gluten Free Onion Rings. I was a bit hesitant, however, as things have been pretty hit and miss with Ians Natural Products gluten-free selection. I love the French Bread Pizzabut disliked the French Toast Sticks. Go figure. But, Im never to turn my nose up at trying a product I havent had before.
Especially when its onion rings.
