There’s a spectrum of gluten-related conditions that can affect your body. One is Celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease that affects the small intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients, which can lead to a variety of symptoms. Other gluten-related disorders include gluten intolerance and a wheat or rye allergy. By narrowing down your issue through testing, you and your doctor can create a plan to help keep you healthy.

Celiac Disease Vs Non
The first and most serious condition related to gluten is a condition known as Celiac disease .
Celiac disease is a condition which your body creates antibodies to gluten particles.
Upon consumption of gluten, your body reacts to various portions of the gluten molecule which results in immune-mediated damage to the intestinal tract .
Damage to the intestinal tract results in blunting of the intestinal villi which may result in malabsorption of both nutrients and calories leading to many different problems.
This damage may also cause increased intestinal permeability and allow the absorption of pathogens and particles that would otherwise not have been absorbed.
This mechanism is what many believe may be the link between the development of further autoimmune diseases and Celiac disease and is known as molecular mimicry .
Celiac disease results in symptoms in both the intestinal tract and outside of the intestinal tract.
The diagnosis of Celiac disease is made by assessing serum levels of certain antibodies, the presence of which may indicate the disease state in your body .

The “gold standard” for diagnosis of Celiac disease is an intestinal biopsy which shows immune-mediated damage and intestinal damage.
In most cases, this is NOT necessary as the presence of positive antibodies in the serum should be enough to make the recommendation to alter your diet.

Should I Avoid Gluten
Considering gluten is completely harmless that occurs naturally in various food, eating a gluten-free diet is not recommended for someone without coeliac disease or gluten intolerance.
A gluten-free diet is highly restrictive and may result in nutrient deficiencies.
It should be avoided only if youre allergic to wheat or managing gluten intolerance and coeliac disease as asked by a doctor.
Foods To Avoid If You Have A Gluten Intolerance
The only treatment for gluten intolerance is to avoid foods containing gluten, such as:
- Salad dressings and sauces
While this may seem like a daunting list, most fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meats or fish that are not breaded or battered are gluten-free. Reading the food ingredients list can help you avoid gluten.
If you are gluten intolerant and eat gluten-containing foods, you may experience pain, but it won’t affect your long-term health. Therefore, if you only experience mild symptoms after you eat gluten, you may not need to avoid some of your favorite gluten-containing foods entirely.

What Are The Symptoms Of Coeliac Disease
People with coeliac disease can have severe symptoms, or they may have no obvious symptoms at all. Common symptoms include:
- gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea or constipation, fatty stools , nausea, vomiting, flatulence , feeling pain or discomfort in the tummy
- itchy and blistery skin rash
- easy bruising
Many of these symptoms are very common and can occur in other conditions such as wheat intolerance, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity or irritable bowel syndrome. However, coeliac disease is widely recognised as being under-diagnosed so its important to consider it as a possible cause for a few or many of these symptoms.
Its important not to self-diagnose coeliac disease if you feel better when you remove gluten from your diet. Coeliac disease is an important cause of gluten intolerance, yet feeling better if you dont eat gluten doesnt mean you have the condition there could be other causes of your symptoms.
Even if you have no obvious symptoms, there may still be damage to your bowel.
Its important to be screened for coeliac disease if you have:
- an autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes or an autoimmune thyroid condition
Gluten Intolerance And Celiac Disease Are Different
There are two different types of gluten intolerance: Celiac disease and non-celiac gluten intolerance.
Celiac disease is a genetic, autoimmune disorder that affects about 1 in 100 people worldwide. People with celiac disease are genetically predisposed to gluten intolerance, and even ingesting a very small amount can lead to severe damage of the small intestine.
The disease can develop at any age and, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems.Most concerning? Many people who have celiac disease dont realize it. In fact, the Celiac Disease Foundation reports that an estimated 2.5 million Americans are undiagnosed, and therefore at risk for major long-term health complications.
But you dont have to have celiac disease to have a gluten intolerance. Non-celiac gluten intolerance can be tough to diagnose because its not an autoimmune disease or a food allergy . Non-celiac gluten intolerance means that your bodys digestive system cant tolerate any form of the protein gluten. If consumed, your body fights against it with inflammation, causing digestive issues like fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea and gassiness. Its estimated that 15 percent of the U.S. population has some sort of non-celiac gluten intolerance.

Diagnostic Tests For Celiac Disease
If you experience digestive symptoms or signs of poor vitamin and nutrient absorption, such as unexplained weight loss, an NYU Langone gastroenterologist can perform diagnostic tests to determine whether celiac disease may be the cause. For adults, doctors typically recommend both blood tests and biopsies, in which tissue samples are examined under a microscope, to confirm the diagnosis.
Gluten And Mood Disorders
Schizophrenia and depression have been linked to gluten sensitivity. In fact, gluten sensitivity seems to be a causative factor for schizophrenia in patients genetically susceptible to the condition.
In one study, A drastic reduction, if not full remission, of schizophrenic symptoms after initiation of gluten withdrawal has been noted in a variety of studies.

What Causes A Food Intolerance
It is often unclear why a person is sensitive to certain foods.
If your symptoms happen after eating dairy products, its possible you may have lactose intolerance. This means your body cannot digest lactose, a natural sugar found in milk, yoghurt and soft cheeses. A GP can usually diagnose lactose intolerance by looking at your symptoms and medical history.

Otherwise, the culprit may be a food additive, chemical or contaminant, such as:
- monosodium glutamate
- toxins, viruses, bacteria or parasites that have contaminated food
