This healthy Gluten Free Naan Bread contains no yeast and it is so easy to make. It comes together in 20 minutes with simple ingredients. Packed with garlic and, herb flavors and it goes great with soups, chili and so many other recipes.

Gluten Free Naan Bread is so easy to make and is full of flavor. It makes a wonderful gluten free bread option but can also be made with regular flours as well. You can make it ahead and reheat it to serve with your favorite soups or chili or even use it as a base for pizza!

It is just as good as these gluten free bagels that we are also obsessed with. I used the same type of gluten free all purpose flour mixed with yogurt concept to keep this naan bread recipe healthy, simple and so delicious.

My family loves naan but they are not all gluten free and they loved this recipe. The bread came out so fluffy that they couldnt even tell that it was gluten-free!

What Else Can I Do With Naan

There are many possibilities for using naan. Here are just a few suggestions for serving it:

  • As a side dish with curries, soups, or stews
  • As a side with a salad, especially a Greek salad
  • As a wrap, like I mentioned above for chicken souvlaki and vegetables rolled up in the naan
  • Spread with pizza sauce and top with cheese and bake for an easy and quick pizza
  • Smear with peanut butter and jelly and roll for pb& j rollups
  • Fill one side with cheese and fold over. Griddle for a grilled cheese/quesadilla

The Pros And Cons Of Yeast

There are a few pros and cons of using yeast. Not just in bread, but also in general. So lets talk about some of the pros and cons of yeast.

Pros of yeast:

  • helps bread rise and get nice and fluffy
  • creates a unique flavor in the bread
  • the right amount can support a healthy gut

Cons of yeast:

  • can be troublesome for folks with gastrointestinal issues or candida overgrowth
  • yeasted baking takes extra time for the rising
  • yeast can be quite finicky and needs to have a very specific temperature
  • many people have allergies to yeast

Im not someone who struggles with yeast, but I know many of you are, so I wanted to create a gluten-free yeast-free bread that you can make at home and still love.

So if youre a sandwich , but your body does not tolerate yeast, it can be hard to find a bread recipe that you can actually enjoy. Thats exactly why I created this recipe for you

Can I Freeze Naan Bread

Yes, yes, yes!! I freeze just about every gluten free bread I make, and this yeast free naan is no exception. Theres no way I could eat all the bread I make before it goes bad, so the best way to keep it for a long time is to freeze it.

Place any leftover naan on a parchment-lined baking sheet in one even layer and freeze for about one hour. Remove from the baking sheet and place naan in a gallon-sized ziptop freezer bag and remove as much air from the bag as possible. Freeze for 2-3 months.

To reheat naan, wrap with foil and place in a 325-degree F oven for about 10-15 minutes or until heated through.

Were all in this together so we may as well make good use of the time and make some gluten free YEAST free naan. Itll be a nice flatbread change from all the other breads weve been baking!

How Do You Get Gluten

Easy Peasy Yeast

Making gluten-free bread rises well in an oven that has reached 200 degrees F when the temperature reaches this point, turn off the oven and place a shallow baking pan filled with hot water on a shelf.

A beautifully risen loaf is made up of a wide range of ingredients. Yeast, eggs, xanthan gum, and baking powder/soda are the key ingredients for achieving the best results. Baking should be done at room temperature with all of the ingredients. Gluten free dough spreads more than lift due to its lack of structure. A salt solution kills yeast if it is added to the first starter mixture after it has been mixed together combine warm water, sugar, and yeast and let it sit for 10 minutes to be proof . When salt is added to dry ingredients, it has already dissolved when the two ingredients are combined at the same time. Wheat dough is stronger and more durable than Gluten-Free dough, so the dough will rise straight up into a big pillow. When using a bread machine, whisk all of the dry ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl before adding the oil.

What About The Bread Color

If you want a gluten free sourdough bread that is lighter in color, then use lighter flours. For example buckwheat flour can be found in darker color and lighter color.The light one is made with hulled buckwheat the darker flour is made from unhulled and has dark flecks from the hull. The dark one, naturally, also has more fibre. So if you want a more delicate crumb with a light and airy appearance then use the light one like this one, or organic sprouted buckwheat flour.

Same for sorghum flour, it ranges from light brown, which has a neutral taste, to dark brown, which is whole grain and has an earthier flavor.

My favorite is the oat flour its perfect in gluten free baking: its light in color and when paired with other flours, it can help soften and lighten up the texture, give more of a chew and help keep baked goods moist. Plus its cheaper.

How Can I Vary The Flavor Of The Bread

Consider adding dried herbs or spices to the bread to vary the flavor. For example, 1 to 2 tablespoons of dried Italian herbs or herbes de Provence or 2 to 3 teaspoons of ground cumin, curry powder, garlic powder, or onion power.

Today I want to share a recipe with you for yeast free gluten free bread. Thats because if you live in the UK at least, youll be having difficulty getting hold of yeast.

Since launching my gluten free bread mix a few weeks ago life has changed rather dramatically. And Im finding many of my lovely customers are unable to try out their bread mix because they cant get yeast.

I therefore promised to devise a way around this, and this easy gluten free soda bread is the answer.

I will be working on dairy and egg free versions so watch this space.

Firstly youll need a packet of my gluten free bread mix.

The mix has taken over ten years to develop. In fact ever since I gave up eating wheat, Ive been trying to make a decent, tasty loaf of gluten free bread.

I finally cracked it last year and that, combined with my new life free from self imposed limits, I brought it to market last month.

However, it was designed to have yeast added to it to create the perfect loaf. And in our current situation there appears to be a shortage of yeast. Hence this creation of a yeast free gluten free bread!

In addition to my gluten free bread mix youll need sugar, lemon juice , bicarbonate of soda, milk and an egg.

Note On Yeast Substitutes

Though all of these substitutes will make your dough rise, they wont produce identical results to that yeast. Some differences could be that your bread will not rise as tall as youre used to, the flavor is a little different, or the texture may not be exactly the same. However, if youre out of yeast or dont have the time to wait for your bread to rise, these substitutes will undoubtedly get the job done.

How To Store Easy Gluten

Like a good artisanal loaf, you can actually leave this bread out on the counter for up to 24 hours! I just flip the cut side down on the cutting board or a plate, so the exposed middle doesnt dry out when exposed to the air. If you happen to pull this loaf out of the oven in the evening, just leave it out until morning, then enjoy all day or wrap it.

To store, wrap in any airtight container, and store on the counter.

I dont recommend refrigerating this bread, because it contains gelatin, so chilled, the breads texture will change.

To freeze for longer term storage, pre-slice the bread. Then freeze for 30 to 60 minutes so slices stay separate. Then wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. To eat, just pop off the number of slices you need, and toast or warm gently.

Can This Recipe Be Made Egg

Gluten

Now I know the first question Im going to be asked is after I post this recipe is, Can I make this without eggs?. I want to address that now and tell you that honestly, I dont think so. This recipe relies on the structure that the eggs provide and helps the loaf rise, so I just dont know if it will work with a flax/chia replacement. I will tell you however, Im on a mission to create a gluten-free, dairy-free, yeast-free, egg-free quinoa bread that will still be tender and soft, that will toast nicely and that can be used for sandwiches. The task will be harder, and it might take me a few times to master, but I promise, Im going to try my darndest to get that recipe nailed.

For now, if you can tolerate eggs, I recommend that you give this sandwich bread a try. I promise you wont be disappointed!

Does This Loaf Need To Rise Before Baking

Nope! This bread is as easy to make as a loaf of banana bread! Theres no yeast in this recipe, no need to wait for it to rise.

The baking soda creates a slight rise while the loaf bakes.

However, if you want to make this loaf extra gentle to digest or want the sour flavor, you can make this loaf into Sourdough Gluten-free Rice Bread. In this case, see the Recipe Notes below, where I walk you through the extra step. In my experience, most people do not need to ferment white rice its already pretty gentle. But some people do! If thats you, enjoy the sourdough version of this recipe.

What Can I Use Instead Of White Vinegar

There are many kinds of vinegar on the market, but I found white vinegar to be the best, as it is the least evident in the bread dough itself.

Apple cider vinegar and malt vinegar should work, but on their own, they are extremely overpowering, so Id assume the flavor would come through in the bread.

The Ingredients In Gluten Free Yeast Free Naan

Its unbelievably easy to make this non-yeasted naan bread, so lets get started! But first, the list of ingredients:

  • Kims gluten free bread flour blendthere really is no substitute for my bread flour blend. If you need to substitute within the blend itself, youll find all that info on my flour blends page.
  • Milkfor dairy free, use a dairy-free milk.
  • Yogurtjust plain yogurt, not Greek style. If all you have is Greek yogurt, add about a tbsp or two of heavy cream to about 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt and stir. This will loosen it up enough to use it in this recipe. For dairy-free, use a dairy-free yogurt, such as So Delicious.
  • Butter, ghee, or clarified butterfor brushing onto the naan when its done. For dairy-free, choose a dairy-free butter alternative. .

Storing No Yeast Bread

Gluten- Free Fermented Millet Bread – Vegan +Yeast-Free

If you plan on enjoying the soda bread within 2-3 days, its best for you to keep it at room temperature, in a sealed container.

For slightly longer shelf life, you can store in the fridge and it will remain fresh for up to 7 days.

NOTE: Before consuming, it is highly recommended you toast it first.

What Is The Best Type Of Yeast To Use In This Gluten

This recipe uses instant yeast or rapid rise yeast. I use Fleshmans Rapid Rise Yeast. It is important to use the rapid yeast and to make sure it is at room temperature.

Rapid rise yeast does not need to be proofed and can be added directly to the flour. It is still important to use warm water because yeast is a live organism and thrives in a warm environment.

Heat the water just until it feels warm to the touch. Or use a thermometer to check the waters temperature. The ideal temperature for instant yeast is 100°110°F. If the water is any hotter than that, it could kill the yeast and your bread will not rise.

If you want to make sure that your instant yeast is still active, you can proof the yeast before adding it to the flour mixture. Add the honey to the warm water and stir until it dissolves.

Then add the yeast to the water mixture and allow to sit for 5 minutes until bubbly. This is not a necessary step. This is only needed if your yeast is not new or fresh.

I have not tried active dried yeast in this recipe. Active dried yeast requires a proofing step. Active dried yeast also requires a longer rising time.

Does This Gluten Free Yeast Free Bread Store Well

One of the many reasons to love this bread is how well it stores. It can be stored as a complete loaf or pre-sliced on the counter for up to 3 days. For longer storage, place pieces of wax paper in between each slice and seal it in a plastic bag and place it in the freezer. Defrost by warming in an oven or toaster and it still tastes amazing.

Why Was My Gluten

For your bread machine, does it have a gluten free setting? This setting is important because it only does one mix cycle, not two mix cycles like you get with other settings.

If you dont have the gluten free setting option, use a quick program that features one mixing cycle, rather than two, when making gluten free bread. Mixing it twice will always cause the bread to be denser.

Are you scooping your measuring cup into the flour? Or spooning the flours into the cups and then leveling? You should always spoon then level.

Otherwise, youll end up with more flour than you want which causes the bread to be dense.

Are you storing your flours in the freezer or refrigerator? If flours are stored that way they lose moisture and when they are mixed with other ingredients they tend to absorb more of the moisture and the bread is denser.
