Almond Flour Waffles Recipe | Gluten-Free!

This recipe for almond flour waffles makes a delectable treat for breakfast, brunch with friends, or even dessert. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve.

  • Breakfast: Enjoy fresh with butter and a generous drizzle of maple syrup, coconut whipped cream and berries. Or if you are a fan of chocolate top it off with a dollop of my Healthy Chocolate Frosting.
  • Brunch: Serve them to a crowd with a gorgeous dollop of maple whipped cream, jam, and seasonal fruit toppings.
  • Toast: Pop one in the toaster oven and slather with jam, almond butter, or peanut butter.
  • Dessert: Serve it as part of a dessert bar with plenty of toppings and even more almond flour cake to go around. Or layer it with my Maple Cream Cheese frosting for a mini-layered waffle cake.

To keep the crispy almond flour waffles warm, preheat the oven to 200 degrees F. Place the waffles on a rack set inside a baking sheet and keep in the oven to stay warm while the other waffles cook.

How To Serve Low Carb Waffles

Keto waffles are the perfect weekend low carb breakfast idea. But they are also great for a little morning or afternoon snack. You can serve them the traditional way with a little butter and low-carb maple syrup just like almond flour pancakes.

I also like to serve them with fresh berries and a little whipped cream on top. This is one of my favorite after work snacks. They are a real treat topped with fruit and whipped cream.

Since they are stored in the refrigerator, I just pop one in the microwave or toaster to heat it up. I find the toaster oven makes them crisper than the microwave.

A large batch of these almond waffles can be made ahead to freezer for later. All you’d have to do is reheat them in the microwave or toaster oven straight from the freezer.

This is an almond flour waffle recipe that can be adjusted to suit your taste and dietary needs. The shape and texture of the waffles will also vary depending on the make and type of waffle iron you use. For best results, use a classic waffle iron versus a thick Belgian one.

  • Preheat waffle iron: Plug in your waffle iron and allow it to preheat. If necessary, set to medium-high heat, depending on the brand of your waffle maker.
  • Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, mix together almond flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt.
  • Whisk wet ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together egg, coconut oil, maple syrup, almond milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Make waffle batter: Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix together until smooth.
  • Prepare waffles: When the waffle iron is hot, brush with a light coating of coconut oil, then pour cup of the almond flour waffle batter into the center, making sure to scrap all the batter from the measuring cup.
  • Cook waffles: Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes . Use a fork to gently remove the cooked waffle, then repeat with the remaining batter, making sure to lightly grease the waffle iron in between each one to prevent sticking.     Almond Flour Vs Almond Meal

    Almond meal is made from whole ground almonds with the skin on, whereas almond flour is made from blanched almonds without the skin.

    Be sure to use blanched almond flour and not whole almond meal for these waffles. While similar, they have very different textures and will yield different results. For this recipe, you want to use blanched almond flour.

    Keto waffles can be just as good or better than wheat flour ones. These delicious low carb almond flour waffles can be made ahead and frozen for quick and easy breakfast.

    For this recipe, I modified a standard waffle recipe to use almond flour instead of regular wheat flour. The recipe came from an old Better Homes and Garden cookbook.

    I also have a coconut flour waffles recipe if you don’t have almond flour. But you do need more eggs when using coconut flour.

    This low carb waffle recipe makes about 6 waffles that are perfect to have on hand during the week. If you prefer to make more and store them, you can double or triple the ingredients.

    To store these gluten-free waffles, let them cool and place them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one week.

    They also freeze well, and I was surprised to see that they freezer-friendly. I pop them back into the waffle maker to get the best crispy keto waffles.

    Tips For Making These Keto Waffles Perfectly

    • Make sure to use almond flour, not almond meal. Using almond meal will result in waffles that are denser and not fluffy. The bag should say almond flour on it and be very light in colour and have a fine texture.
    • If you like a sweeter waffle, feel free to add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar to the waffle batter.
    • If you like a savoury waffle, omit the vanilla extract from the recipe.
    • Be patient when cooking. Its best to cook almond flour on medium-low heat to prevent it from burning. This usually means you may need to cook the waffles slightly longer on each side than traditional waffles.
    • Almond flour naturally has a grainer texture than wheat flour. This is just the texture of almond flour and cannot be completely avoided. The grainy texture is delicious! Just remember to expect this type of texture when you make this recipe.

    For starters, these waffles are so easy to make. Theyre gluten free and sugar free. I do have to say that my almond flour waffles are one of my favorite recipes.

    They have an utterly delicious smell, and great flavor. Warm maple syrup drizzled over the top just makes these waffles extra special. Now, I do top mine with powdered sugar, but you can definitely omit that without any worries.

    I can promise that this almond flour recipe will become your new favorite breakfast recipe. There is no added sugar, except for a dusting of powdered sugar, and you would never know that by tasting these delicious waffles.

    A good non-stick waffle iron is key to making great almond flour waffles. And, you’ll want to make sure they are fully cooked before trying to take them out.

    I’ve found that watching the steam coming out of the waffle iron is a good way to test for doneness. Typically, when the steam slows down is when the waffles are done.

    Also, make sure you don’t over mix the batter. I find using a rubber spatula to gently mix the ingredients until the batter is smooth.

    Another common mistake is to lift the lid of the waffle maker too early. This can cause the waffle to break in the middle with each half stuck on the waffle plates.

    Making These Almond Flour Waffles

    These almond flour waffles are made with finely ground almond flour. Canned coconut milk makes this a dairy-free waffle. If youd like to use another type of milk either dairy or a dairy free nut milk use 1-1/4 cup to replace the coconut milk.

    We used an Oster DuraCeramic Belgian Waffle Maker set on max. Each waffle took about 8 minutes to cook and popped out of the waffle maker easily.

    This recipe makes a thick waffle batter. Spoon it into the waffle iron and spread it out toward the edges before closing it.

    Does Almond Flour Get Crispy

    Almond flour does get crispy, the but the texture isnt perfect on its own. When you add a touch arrowroot starch to this recipe, the resulting almond flour waffles have a great crispy texture, without being too dry.

    I recommend using a classic waffle iron for this recipe to achieve maximum crispiness, while also keeping the portion sizes manageable.

    Belgian waffles require twice the batter, and therefore will take longer to cook. You dont want the outside of the waffles to burn before the inside is cooked. I tested this recipe in a thicker waffle maker, and it was okay, but not as wonderfully crispy as using a classic waffle maker.

    How To Make Gluten

    • In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. Set aside.
    • In a large measuring cup or separate bowl, mix together the milk, cider vinegar and oil. Separate the eggs by adding the egg yolks to the milk mixture and the whites to a small mixing bowl.
    • Using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites on high speed until foamy and they hold soft peaks.
    • Whisk the egg yolks into the milk mixture.
    • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk to combine, about 20 stroke of stirring. A few small lumps are ok.

    Freezer: place the waffles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place them in the fridge for about 2 hours or until the waffles are mostly frozen. Transfer the waffles to a freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. The waffles can be reheated directly from the freezer in the oven or in a toaster.
