Silk Oatmilk Is Not Gluten
Did you know that Silk Oatmilk, which is labeled free from gluten, actually contains detectable levels of gluten and is unsafe to consume on the gluten-free diet?
Regardless of what you read on the website and see labeled on the product, you should avoid Silk Oatmilk beverages. Heres why:
- On the Silk FAQ web page, the company says all its Silk beverages are gluten free except for its oatmilks . Below is a screenshot taken from the Silk website in early March 2021 and which is still in place as of August 2022.
- However, Silk Oatmilk cartons are clearly labeled free from gluten.
- I emailed the company about this conflicting information and they replied as follows: As of October 2020 our new Oat Yeah beverage recipe is gluten free. The most up-to-date information on our products will be on the carton themselves.
This conflicting information led me to take matters into my own hands.
I decided to independently test Silk Oatmilk with my Nima Sensor, a portable gluten-detecting device, to find out if Silk Oatmilk contain hidden gluten.
Unfortunately, as suspected, Nima found gluten. I tested it twice to be sure.
If youre on a strict gluten-free diet, I recommend you avoid Silk Oatmilk and all Silk Oatmilk products, including Silk Oatmilk creamers.

Is Oatly Healthier Than Milk
Oat milk is a type of milk that is made from oats. Unlike cows milk, oat milk does not contain any cholesterol or saturated fat. Additionally, oat milk is a good source of fiber and vitamins. While oat milk is not necessarily healthier than cows milk, it does have some health benefits that make it a good choice for those who are looking for an alternative to cows milk.
One of the main health benefits of oat milk is that it is low in saturated fat. Saturated fat is the type of fat that is known to raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Oat milk is also a good source of fiber. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body cannot digest. However, fiber is important for the health of the digestive system. Additionally, fiber can help to lower cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels.
Another health benefit of oat milk is that it is a good source of vitamins. Oat milk is a good source of vitamin A, which is important for vision and the immune system. Oat milk is also a good source of vitamin D, which is important for bone health. Additionally, oat milk is a good source of vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
Mooala Organic Coconut Oatmilk
Sugar-free Mooala Oatmilk gets its creaminess not from oil but from organic coconut cream. The coconut flavor is natural and subtle, and it gives the beverage a more exciting taste than your typical oat milk. Since it has such a clean, non-oily mouthfeel, we prefer to drink it by itself and eat it with cinnamon-y cereals rather than use it as a coffee creamer.
Ingredients: Organic gluten-free oat milk , organic coconut cream, less than 2 percent of calcium fortification , sea salt, organic cinnamon, gellan gum

Oat Milk: Is It Gluten Free
Is oat milk gluten free? Well, if you already know that oats are naturally gluten-free then the answer seems to be yes. But the truth is a bit more complicated.
Oats, like wheat, barley, rice, and cornmeal, are a grain. Unlike wheat, though, unprocessed oats do not contain gluten. It seems straightforward, but heres the catch: Oats are often processed on the same equipment used for making wheat products.
Because of that fact gluten contamination is often inevitable. In fact, its possible that even certified gluten-free oats may cause a bad reaction in some people who have celiac disease. Those with celiac who find that they can stomach oats should be cautious when it comes to buying oat milk. Unless the oats used in oat milk are certified gluten free, then there is a risk that theyve come into contact with grains at a processing facility.
If you find oat milk that is certified gluten free what exactly would you be drinking? Simply, oat milk is made by blending oats with water. The mixture is then strained to remove any pulp. The result is oat milk, which many find thicker and creamier than other types of plant-based milk. Also, theres a slightly sweet taste making it perfect for coffee, cereal or just about any other drink or dish that requires milk.
If you want to give oat milk a try, check out the brands listed below.
How Is It Made
Oat milk is processed the same way that any other nut milk or dairy-free milk is. Oats and water are placed in a high-powered blender, combined, and blended.
After blending, the liquid is filtered to remove any leftover particles. The liquid left is oat milk and can be used in any of your favorite recipes or on cereal.
In factories, its usually processed with various additives as previously mentioned.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Drinking Oat Milk
Nicole Magryta, RDN, author of Nourish Your Tribe, says most oat milks contain one to three grams of fiber per serving , but also contain more calories and carbohydrates. In other words, you’re kind of coming out even unless you’re buying fortified oat milk from a supermarket.
“The health benefits of the milk itself are not necessarily from the oats and water, which offer marginal benefits, but from the fortified nutrients added during processing,” says Magryta. ” vitamins A, D, B12, B2 and calcium are added so the product can be a close nutritional substitute for dairy milk.”
What about homemade, unfortified oat milk is there any point to drinking it? Yes, but mostly only if you need to avoid cow’s milk because of an allergy or want to support a more sustainable alternative, says Magryta. Because sensitivities or allergies to oats are uncommon, oat milk gives people with dietary restrictions on soy, dairy, or nuts another beverage alternative.
Califa Farms Oat Milk
Califa Farms Extra Creamy Oat Milk is considered gluten-free by the company, which it says follows FDA guidelines to meet the requirement that its milk has less than 20 parts per million gluten.
However, Califa Farms says it cannot guarantee that its oats have not come into contact with gluten-containing crops.
The company uses a mechanical sorting method to prevent gluten-containing grains from reaching that 20 parts per million threshold.

Choosing A Healthy Gluten Free Almond Milk
Not only are many almond milks suitable for those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, they are also highly nutritious.
In addition to the nutrients naturally present in almonds, almond milk is often fortified with calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin B12, and other nutrients .
With that being said, there are some less healthy ingredients commonly added to almond milk to look out for. For example, GreenChoice analyzed over 55,000 products and found that over 45% of non-dairy beverages contain added sugars these supple energy but offer little to no other nutritional value .
When choosing a healthy almond milk that fits your dietary needs, its important to look out for:
- Added sugar. Common types of added sugars in almond milk include cane sugar, cane syrup, cane juice, maple syrup, and honey. Keep in mind, even plain varieties may contain added sugar. Instead, opt for unsweetened varieties to avoid added sugar .
- Carrageenan. Carrageenan is an additive frequently found in nut milks, used as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. While this ingredient is generally recognized as safe by the FDA, several animal studies suggest it may increase inflammation in the gut and worsen symptoms of digestive diseases such as ulcerative colitis . Additionally, limited research in animals has linked both food-grade and non food-grade carrageenan to colon cancer .

Can You Heat Up Oatmilk Or Cook The Oats First
Most commercial brands of oatmeal milk can be heated just like any other nondairy milk.
The homemade version will thicken when heated, but Ive found that adding the optional oil prevents it from thickening too much to use as a creamer or in an oat milk latte.
Because it gets thicker when heated, this is a great vegan milk choice for sauces, gravies, or any recipe that you want to thicken naturally.
As for cooking the oats first, you absolutely can.
Years ago, one of my favorite breakfasts was cooked oatmeal that Id blend after cooking for added creaminess. You can still find these recipes on my site if you search
As another fun idea, you can also toast the oats before turning them into milk.
Oat Milk: Good Or Bad

Gluten Free Oat Milk Not Using Purity Protocol
On my never-ending search for purity protocol oat milk, Ill be updating this whenever I can confirm or deny major brands and what oat sources they use. Stay tuned!
Califia FarmsAll of our products are gluten-free according to FDA guidelines, which requires products have under 20ppm of gluten. Our Oatmilks are processed in Bakersfield, California and made with whole rolled oats grown in North America. Although oats are naturally gluten free, they may come into contact with wheat, barley, and rye as the supply moves from the fields to the mills. Our vendors have to guard against adventitious contamination with these gluten-containing grains and employ proprietary cleaning and sorting technologies that ensures not only adherence to government standards but goes beyond that to provide an ingredient that surpasses government standards for Gluten-Free. Unfortunately, sorting is necessary in order to ensure there are controls in place to prevent adventitious contamination with gluten-containing grains that would surpass the maximum threshold level for sensitivity by celiacs and gluten-intolerant individuals.
Oatly I confirmed this in person at Expo West, and their website claims they use Grain Millers .
