Is Taco Bell Meat Gluten
Though there is no official statement from Taco Bell about whether or not their meat is gluten-free, we can assume there are no gluten ingredients in the meat. This is because a few of the taco menu items show up in the does not contain section when gluten is selected.
Because of this, Id assume that Taco Bell meat doesnt have any gluten ingredients, but isnt necessarily gluten-free. Due to the high probability of cross contamination with gluten in the kitchen prep area, Id assume the meat likely has come into contact with gluten.

I know I have, and many people over the years have asked me to test Taco Bell for hidden gluten with my Nima Sensor.
I havent had Taco Bell since I was diagnosed with celiac disease nearly 10 years ago, but a few readers have told me they have successfully eaten at Taco Bell so I decided it was worth looking into, in the name of research, of course.
At first glance, I noticed that, on the Taco Bell website, the restaurant says several of its menu items are made without gluten.Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats . While the items do not contain gluten, Taco Bell says they are not considered gluten free.
Please note that after further investigation in the ingredient list, oats appear to be used in multiple made without gluten menu items, including the taco shells and seasoned beef. You can independently verify this information by checking the ingredient list on the Taco Bell website.
Ignoring the fact that many of these items contain oats and other questionable ingredients, Taco Bell says its customers avoiding gluten could order any of the following items:
- Power Menu Bowls
- Doritos Locos Tacos
- Rice topped with Black Beans

It may seem like a gimmick but gimmicks dont have the staying power that the Doritos Loco Tacos have.

Putting Taco Bell To The Nima Sensor Test
Even though I didnt feel comfortable or confident eating at Taco Bell, I still decided to order a few items to test them with my Nima Sensor. Maybe I had the restaurant all wrong. Then again, maybe not.
The Nima Sensor is a portable gluten-detecting device that enables gluten-free diners to test their food for hidden gluten before they eat it. Nima offers a level of unprecedented food transparency and is a welcome addition to any gluten-free persons safe-eating toolkit.
Unfortunately, like most things, some people in the celiac community do not like this technology because its super sensitive, which they say can lead to false positives given that the FDA says a food can be labeled gluten free even if it contains up to 19 ppm of gluten.
Personally, I like that Nima detects ANY gluten . Its a powerful tool in keeping me safe from hidden gluten.

I ordered the three menu items that Taco Bell says are made without gluten. Please note I discussed my food allergy briefly with the server, but she told me she wasnt aware of any special protocols for handling gluten-free or allergy orders. She did, however, suggest that the crunchy tacos and Power Bowls would be good choices for me.

What Can You Eat At Taco Bell If Youre Gluten
I almost prefer fast food to any “slow” dining experience. I like to be able to see the server preparing everything. I like to be able to ask them to change gloves or use a special utensil if need be, or catch them if they try to put my sandwich on a bun and then justoopsie!take it off.
Fast food provides a certain peace of mind that I can’t get from other restaurants, and while there may be a risk of cross-contamination, I feel a lot more secure watching my sub-par food be prepared than I am trusting someone to remember to leave the bread off my plate at a more expensive sit-down restaurant.
