How To Make This Paleo Apple Pie
This apple pie is easier to make than you might expect! You can always make the pie dough ahead of time and refrigerate until its time to bake the pie.
I do this every time I make a pie!
Prepare the crust first. In the bowl of a food processor, pulse all ingredients EXCEPT eggs to create thick crumbs, then pulse/process in the eggs until a dough forms. Gather the dough into a ball and split into two equal parts. I usually weigh each one to make sure theyâre even. Wrap dough balls in plastic wrap and flatten into discs, then chill while you prepare the apple filling .
Once apple filling is prepared, place it in the fridge while you roll out bottom and top crust.
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees and have your pie dish ready. Roll out one dough into a 12â circle between two sheets of parchment paper, dusting with tapioca or arrowroot if needed.
Place your pie dish upside-down over the dough, then using the bottom parchment paper, flip the dough into the dish. Finish by pressing it into the bottom and sides of the pie dish to fit this dough will break easily since it lacks gluten, however it also repairs incredibly easily and can withstand a lot of manipulation without affecting the final product!
Place the pie dish in the fridge, then roll out the top crust into another 11-12â circle, then carefully place in the refrigerator until ready to top the apple filling.

Press Dough Into Pie Tin
Remove the top parchment paper and then place your hand below the bottom piece of parchment to flip the dough onto your pie tin, then slowly peel off the remaining parchment paper as you press the dough into the tin. Note that the dough may break, but dont worry as you can easily press the dough back into place .
Ingredients Needed For Gluten Free Apple Pie Recipe
For the Crust
- Plant butter: I like the avocado oil kind but use whatever you prefer!
- Cold water: You want ice cold water! Its essential to a perfectly flaky gluten free crust.
Alternatively you can use store bought gluten free crusts. Youll need two unbaked 9-inch crusts.
For the Apple Filling
- 8 cups peeled and sliced apples: This usually works out to be around 10 apples. See below for apple suggestions.
- Gluten-free flour: Again, just your favorite all purpose blend.
- Spices: Youll need cinnamon, nutmeg, and a dash of allspice.

Homemade Gluten Free Apple Pie Made Easy
In the past, I had made this pie with a much more complicated custard-style apple filling. It called for eggs and sour cream, plus a bit of flour in the filling. Thank goodness Ive recovered from that. Frankly, it wasnt worth the trouble.
If youve come looking for that sour cream apple pie and found this instead, can you ever forgive me? The simplified filling of nothing more than apples, cinnamon, and sugar holds together beautifully.
The apples are sliced very thin and allowed to sit for a few minutes before being piled into the crust. That way, they release a fair amount of their juices but retain just enough texture.
How To Make Shortcrust Pastry
I prefer making shortcrust pastry in a food processor as it is quicker and mixes the ingredients more thoroughly. Just make sure you don’t pulse the mixture for too long!
If you don’t have a food processor, you can just use a large bowl and a pastry cutter.
Add all the ingredients to your food processor and pulse until the mixture comes together. The dough will likely need some chilled water so add it gradually until the pastry forms flaky crumbs .
If you’re using a food processor, this will only take 1-2 minutes.
Once the pastry comes together, place it in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic. Chilled dough is always easier to work with!

How To Make Dairy Free Apple Pie
While nothing about this pie is difficult, it does take some time to make. Heres how it goes down:
Mix up the filling. First, in a large bowl well toss together plenty of sliced apples, a squeeze of lemon juice, some sugar, flour and a good amount of warm spice.
Prepare the crust. Next, well cut some solid state coconut oil into all-purpose flour and then add in ice water until the dough really starts to come together.
Roll it out. Well divide our dough in two and then roll out into two smooth circles.
Assemble the pie. Well tuck one of the circles into a pie dish, then spoon in all that delicious apple filling. The other circle gets placed on top and then well seal off the edges and cut a few slits in the crust to vent.
Bake until golden. The pie gets popped in the oven and baked for about 1 hour, until lightly golden in color and the apples are nice and soft.
Be sure to let it cool for at least several hours before diving in. With your favorite non dairy vanilla ice cream of course!

The Best Apple Pie Starts Off With A Great Crust
Pie has always been my favorite special dessert . My mom taught be to bake pie when I was probably somewhere around 9 or 10. In fact, I think apple pie is probably the first pie we ever made together.
My mom taught me to make homemade pie crust, how to roll it out, and make delicious pie fillings anywhere from apple, cherry, and rhubarb, to pumpkin and pecan. We were a pie family, not so much a cake family. Although now I can appreciate a good cake too, like German Chocolate Cake.
This gluten free apple pie recipe starts out the right way with a delicious homemade pie crust, using this recipe. Its flaky and buttery and has great flavor, unlike some gluten free pie crusts! I think the greatest pies always start off with a homemade crust. However, if you are short on time you can buy a gluten-free pie crust at the store.
As for the apples, my mom taught me that using a variety of apples gives the best flavor! And she was totally right. After all my years of baking apple pies, I can say using a few different kinds of apples in the pie always yields the best results. Using a variety of apples gives a greater depth of flavor. You can find my apple suggestions below.

What Kind Of Apples Should I Use
The key to choosing the best apples for a gluten free apple pie recipe is to find varieties that arent too tart and can maintain their texture during the baking process. There are quite a few options that can be used, and you can even mix and match your favorites. However, a few of the best apple varieties include Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Gala, and Pink Lady!
Nutrition Tip: Did you know that the nutritional properties of apples change just slightly based on which kind you use? For instance, dark red varieties such as Red Delicious have more polyphenols than lighter red or green apples. Dont worry, though! No matter which you choose, theyre all super good for you!
Should I Peel The Apples To Make An Apple Pie
Yes, you will need to peel the apples before you thinly slice them! The skins of the apples do not break down when baking and make for a tougher texture.
I use a vegetable peeler to peel the apples. I then use an apple slicer that cores and slices the apples into pieces. Then I slice each apple pie into thirds.
You will need six cups of thinly sliced apples. I used 6 Granny Smith Apples.

Can I Make The Gluten Free Apple Pie Crust Recipe In Advance
Making a gluten free pie crust does take a little time, so I can see why you might be tempted to buy a store-bought one instead.
Rather than do that, just make your pie dough in advance and keep the raw dough in the fridge until you need. So long as you keep it tightly wrapped, it will last several days with no issues. When you’re ready to bake, just roll out the dough and blind bake your crust.

Tips For Serving Up Your Dairy
I think we can all agree that the best vegan apple pie tastes incredible without any frills or fancy ingredients. In our opinion, the simpler it is, the better it tastes. With that in mind, we have a few fun suggestions for serving up your satisfying slice of fruit pie. Let us know your favorite!
- Ill Have Mine With Cheese, Please! Have you ever heard of pairing chunks of cold cheddar cheese with warm apple pie? If youve never tried it, this is the time! It may sound weird and wacky but, believe us, its out of this world! Some of our favorite vegan cheddar cheeses include Violife Epic Mature Cheddar, Miyokos Cultured Vegan Farmhouse Cheddar Chunk, and Field Roast Chao Block.
- Fruit-Filled Fantasy If you like to add a little pizzazz to your apple pie, consider adding chopped fresh or dried fruit or nuts such as apricots, raisins, dates, figs, berries, peaches, walnuts, pecans, or almonds. ¼ cup of nuts and/or ½ cup of fruit is a good amount to begin with. Adds a terrific texture and fun fruit flavor.
- Ultra Creamy & Oh-So-Dreamy What could be better than a dollop of decadent vegan ice cream or wondrous whipped cream with your heavenly piece of pie? Theres something magical about a solitary scoop of chilled ice cream melting on top of a lovely and warm, just-out-of-the-oven slice of pie. Mmmmso good.
What Is The Best Type Of Apples To Make A Gluten
My favorite type of apples to make apple pie are Grann Smith apples. I love the tart flavor of these apples. Granny Smith apples are also crisp and will not get mushy when you bake them.
If you want a less tart and sweeter apple, try Honey Crisp Apples. They are my favorite type of apples. Honey Crisps are crisp and sweet and are perfect for eating or for use in baking.
Another option is Gala Apples. They are crisp and not overly sweet. Gala Apples are great for baking because they are a firm apple that is also sweet.
