SUBWAY Review – Gluten Free Bread

Protein sources, like meats and cheeses, don’t generally contain wheat or gluten. But some pre-sliced deli meats can be hidden sources of gluten because of the fillers or flavorings they contain. These menu items are identified by Subway as not containing gluten, although they are still subject to cross-contamination.

Note that the teriyaki grilled chicken and meatballs in marinara are known to contain gluten.

    Is Subway Safe For Gluten

Whether youre a celiac, or just intolerant to gluten like myself grabbing a quick bite can be a minefield. Subway was always one of my favorite places to eat pre-diagnosis and thankfully, still is. Thats right Subway has plenty of gluten-free options available!

Theres a wide selection of bread available in every store. One of their most popular choices being the flatbread but is Subway flatbread gluten-free? Unfortunately, the flatbread isnt suitable for us, along with almost all other breads. There is hope though dont give up yet!

    What At Subway Is Gluten

It is good news to those who cant have gluten on their diet because these gluten-free options are very common amongst the menu.

I have not had a Subway before but Ive seen a post on Facebook that says the bread is delicious.

Gluten is the protein in barley, rye, and other cereal grains and it should be a very rare ingredient in a restaurant that doesnt serve gluten. But if you or youre with you have celiac disease, or a severe allergy to gluten, you should be aware that most cheeses, vegetables, and dressings can contain gluten, so you might need to be wary.

It is also worth noting that there are some dishes that contain gluten at Subway, including the grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce and the meatballs with marinara.

There are other gluten-free options, like veggie meatloaf without the regular bread, and they have a gluten-free bun or bun-less sub as well.

Gluten-free soups are a good option for those with gluten intolerance, celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

The regular salad is one of the best menu items from Subway.

I think you just answered your own question. Most of these are gluten-free and very tasty with one of Subways great dressings.

You can generally eat salad at Subway without issues if you have celiac disease. Most of their salad items are gluten-free, so you should be fine.

The salads at Subway contain gluten but have no gluten on it. For example, the sweet onion chicken teriyaki salad, seafood sensation salad, and meatball marinara salad.

What Can You Order Gluten Free At Subway

In terms of bread, theres just one option available which tastes very similar to the standard gluten-containing bread, the Italian. Its delicious and isnt crumbly like most gluten-free breads tend to be.

ALL cheeses, condiments , and vegetables Subway offers are completely gluten-free. Most desserts arent suitable for us, but some branches now offer gluten-free brownies yum!

All The Gluten Free Food Is Prepared In The Exact Same Place As The Gluten

Feeding Time with B! Gluten Free Subway!?

Yep, food is prepared in the same place as all the gluten-containing food and toasted in the same ovens

Whilst the bread is placed on a piece of paper so its never directly touching any surface whilst its being prepared, theres signs of gluten all over the place.

Theyre not just preparing sandwiches containing gluten in the same area either theres tons of gluten-bread cutting going on all the time too. Plus, its likely that the sandwich fillings indirectly come into contact with gluten when staff are making regular sandwiches too.

A separate area to prepare and toast gluten free food is a MUST when it comes to minimising cross contamination, so if youre a Coeliac or very careful with cc, I would firmly avoid.

    What Is Subways Gluten

It says that Subways gluten-free bread contains various types of flour, yeast, egg, salt, sugar and leaven .

If youre considering giving your gluten-free diet a try, there are some products on the market that can substitute for bread. You can give it a try, but be prepared for a change in texture and taste.

How To Order If You Have Health Conditions Like Celiac

If you have a serious medical condition like celiac disease, its best to avoid a place like Subway altogether. Even though some locations carry gluten-free bread and ingredients, its difficult to prevent cross-contamination.

The bread itself is often protected from cross-contamination due to its packaging. However, the meats and other ingredients are not.

If you cannot be exposed to gluten contamination, you should not eat at Subway, even locations that have gluten-free bread.

That being said, we understand that sometimes you might find yourself in a situation that requires you to eat at a place like Subway.

When thats the case, here are some tips to help you order at Subway and minimize the chances of gluten contamination:

    • Express the severity of your allergen. Even though it isnt an allergen, use the word allergy since restaurant workers understand what this means.
    • Request the staff to change their gloves, wipe down all surfaces, and use a completely fresh wrapper before making your meal.
    • Request ingredients that are not contaminated from another source, such as ingredients from a refrigerator in the back.
    • Request for a clean knife for cutting your sandwich or request for the sandwich not to be cut.
    • Watch the entire prep and sandwich creation process closely to ensure that they are following your request as closely as possible.
    • Dont order Subway for pickup or delivery.

Subway Do Have Measures In Place To Try And Minimise Cross Contamination But

I asked Subway on Twitter how they would best attempt to minimise cross contamination when preparing gluten free products and here was their response:

    Hi Becky!

    Thank you for your message!

Our Sandwich Artists have been instructed to change their gloves and to clear and clean the build area before taking the gluten free bread out of the packaging. After this the bread is built and put into the toaster oven separately from any other gluten containing breads and on a fresh deli paper. However, we are constantly improving our operations and will be introducing more precautions and practices based on the feedback we receive.

These practices have been successful in multiple markets and weve received many thanks from our guests who suffer from coeliac disease and IBS.

Hopefully this was helpful! Have a lovely day. ?

So heres the BUT when I went in to buy a sandwich to see how it was prepared, they did use a fresh pair of gloves to prepare my sandwich AND the bread did come in packaging

But they did NOT clean the area before preparing it!! Which is a HUGE issue

Subways locations are located in Rhode Island. Arlington. Virginia. New York. Massachusetts. Oregon.

If you want to find out if your local Subway carries gluten-free bread, its best to contact the store before visiting.

What Food At Subway Is Gluten

All of Subways cheesees like cheddar, provolone, American, and Swiss varieties are gluten free. Subways vegetables are also gluten-free. Generally, since gluten is found in grains its a good idea to avoid bread products at Subway.

There are also other items that may contain gluten like all of their desserts, wraps, and even in some of their soups and meats.

If you are unsure you can always ask an employee. Here are some of the meats you can get that are classified as gluten-free:

Top Tips For Ordering In Subway

    • Firstly tell your server of your allergies! Most servers are knowledgeable and helpful.Whenever I ask for gluten-free bread, I ask for the surfaces to be wiped and extra care to be taken even if the server is aware of allergies, and their risks.
    • I dont usually ask as Im not a celiac, but many places will open new bags of ingredients to ensure its safe this is probably worth asking if you are a celiac, as it minimizes cross-contamination.
    • If its your first time, and youre anxious about forgetting whats gluten-free, plan your meal beforehand or print out Subways allergen and sensitivity information and take it with you
    • If youre not comfortable trying the gluten-free bread, opt for a salad or soup very little surface preparation is needed for either of those, and theyre probably the safest of all the options available.

Are There Any Other Gluten Free Options At Subway

Subway does offer a number of salad boxes as well as it’s gluten free bread.

They don’t have a specific gluten free menu, so it’s a case of picking and choosing which items you want from the allergen menu.

However, given the risk of cross contamination with the rolls, I wouldn’t trust a salad from there either.

Even if staff clean down the preparation area and change their gloves as advised, there’s still the risk from ‘double dipping’ in the fillings.

With no separate gluten free preparation area, it’s just not a risk I’m willing to take. I’d rather go hungry.

Does Subway Gluten Free Bread Cost More

I mean, it was already half the size of a footlong sub, are you surprised to hear you also have to pay 50p more for it?

Because yes, sadly, gluten free bread at Subway costs 50p more than any of the ‘normal’ breads.

Yes, I get gluten free stuff is always more expensive, but sadly that seems to be the price we end up pay for having coeliac disease.

Mind you, with their risk of cross contamination, I won’t be spending out that extra 50p after all…

How To Order Gluten Free At Subway

    Subway goes Gluten

If youre simply avoiding gluten, but do not have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, and you still feel comfortable eating at Subway, you should go ahead and order as you wish.

However, if you have a medical condition that is treated by the gluten-free diet, I suggest avoiding Subway altogether.

If you must eat at Subway, as in there are no other options, these are my suggested Dos:

    • Express the seriousness of your gluten-free diet. Use words like allergy . Allergy is simply a word the restaurant industry understands.
    • Ask staff to change his or her gloves when handling your sandwich.
    • Ask staff to wipe down the prep surface AND use a fresh wrapper to protect your sandwich or salad from touching the shared surfaces.
    • If at all possible, ask the staff if there are fresh, non-contaminated ingredients from another source that he or she can use to prepare your sandwich. If not, assess the situation at the prep station and order wisely.
    • At your request, Subway employees also can use a clean knife to cut your sandwich .
    • I also suggest watching the staff handle your sandwich or salad with an eagle eye its okay, you dont want to be sick. If something doesnt feel right, say something.
    • If you feel comfortable doing so, ask for the manager and see if he or she can prepare your sandwich.

    And my suggested Donts:

SUBWAY BREAD Recipe | How to make SUBWAY Bun Sandwich from scratch

To make sure that the bread they bake is gluten-free, Subway restaurants carry all their bread, including the gluten-free bread, without being baked with the other bread products. This means that the gluten-free bread will be served on the same table as the bread that does have gluten in it.

Well that is actually not bad for a Subway, as it is the same size as the bread you buy at a regular grocery store.

Subways, and most fast food restaurants, only serve meatball subs that are a foot long, so they can make a full meal out of one.

Further, if you should go to Subway for a gluten-free sandwich, your gluten-free requirements must be discussed with your Subway sandwich artist, as they cannot guarantee the healthiness of gluten-free products.
