Where Can You Find Gluten In Restaurants

Buffalo Wild Wings – 1/2/19

Depending on the restaurant youre visiting, you may find gluten in a variety of places.

At fast food restaurants, there will be gluten in hamburger buns, the breading of crispy chicken sandwiches or chicken nuggets, some French fries, salad dressings, croutons on salad, and chili or soup options.

At other restaurants, youll find gluten in flour in sauces, in pizza or other pastry dough, pasta, and as a thickener in some soups.

Where gluten is found in the menu items will vary from restaurant to restaurant. Thats why its always a good idea to review menus from home, and see if you can find any allergen information before you get to the restaurant itself.

Being able to review nutritional information and allergen statements before visiting a fast food restaurant can be the difference between ordering something that you think is safe for your gluten-free diet and getting sick.

Being knowledgeable about what specific menu items youll be able to eat without any worries of later reactions is crucial to sticking with your gluten-free diet.

What To Know About Cross Contamination At Restaurants

Most restaurants are not considered gluten-free establishments so its useful to keep this in mind when making decisions about where to go and what to order.

Its important to know that even if a fast food restaurant claims that their menu items do not contain gluten, that the possibility and probability of gluten in their products is going to be high if there is even one menu item with gluten available.

Depending on your level of sensitivity to gluten, this can be make or break information for you.

If you are Celiac and are allergic to trace amounts of gluten, youll likely want to avoid most fast food restaurants that offer any bread products or French fries that are cooked in a shared fryer with other gluten-containing ingredients.

If you are not sensitive to gluten at the trace level and have adverse reactions to gluten due to a food intolerance, you may decide that these trace amounts of gluten from cross contamination are worth risking for a quick, easy, and convenient food option.

Being aware of how you have reacted to gluten in your diet in the past and how much gluten it takes for your body to react is useful knowledge when it comes to situations like these.

Use your best judgment about what you know about your body, how you react to gluten, and what the risks are for you specifically.

Is Wingstop Gluten Free And The Scoop On Chicken Wing Restaurants

Its difficult to find a chicken wing restaurant that caters to the gluten-free community. But not all hope is lost. In this article, Ill share what popular chicken wing restaurants say about gluten, and how you can safely enjoy chicken wings again. This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosures.

Gluten is a sticky protein found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats. Its hidden in many foods such as sauces, dressings and processed foods.

While chicken, for all intents and purposes, is naturally gluten free, the way chicken wings are typically prepared renders them unsafe for anyone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Thats because most chicken wings are deep fried in a shared fryer. This means the same fryer used to cook gluten-free chicken wings is almost always used to also cook other foods like breaded chicken tenders or mozzarella sticks, both which typically contain gluten.

When gluten-free foods are cooked in a shared fryer, all the ingredients commingle and the naturally gluten free foods, such as chicken and French fries, become coated in bits of gluten contaminants and are no longer rendered gluten free.

In the article, Ill discuss how each of the popular wing restaurants cook their chicken wings and what they have to say about gluten. Unfortunately, as youll read, neither Wingstop nor Buffalo Wild Wings are celiac safe.

How To Make Buffalo Chicken Wings In The Air Fryer

  • Clean and pat dry your chicken wings with a paper towel. Add the chicken to a large bowl and season with the dry rub mixture and avocado oil. Make sure all the wings are coated in the seasoning.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 380°F for 3 minutes.
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place the chicken in a single layer into the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket or place chicken on top of each other.
  • Cook at 380°F for 15 minutes. Then, flip the chicken and cook for another 10 minutes, until no longer pink and an instant thermometer reads 165°F. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to work in batches so that the wings are not overcrowded.
  • While the wings are cooking, prepare the buffalo sauce. In a small saucepan, over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Then, add the buffalo sauce and mix well. Warm over medium-low heat for about 2-3 minutes. Pour 1/4 cup into a small bowl to reserve for later.
  • Transfer the chicken wings to a large bowl. Then, pour the remaining buffalo sauce onto the wings and mix until all the wings are coated.
  • Place the chicken coated in buffalo sauce back into the air fryer and heat for 3 minutes at 350°F.
  • Place the wings back into the bowl and top with the 1/4 cup of buffalo sauce that was set aside.
  • Serve with celery and your favorite dipping sauce! Enjoy!

    Which Wings To Use

The subject of controversy . . . wing tip or no wing tip? Many chefs and cooks scoff at the idea of leaving the lowly, undesirable wing tip attached. But, I am an enormous fan of the crispy, crunchy wing tip. And with this recipe, they will be crispy! The recipe will work either way, but I do not recommend using just the drumette.

    Food Allergies And Safety

Buffalo Wild Wings Allergen & Preparation Guide also offers information on food prep and kitchen operations. The restaurant is clear to say that the possibility of cross-contamination exists.

Its A Sad State For Wing Lovers

Does Buffalo Wild Wings Have Gluten Free Food?

If youre craving gluten-free wings, youre going to be sorely disappointed because none of the popular chicken wing chain restaurants currently cater to the gluten-free community, at least yet.

If youre on a mission to find safe, gluten-free chicken wings, I suggest doing the following:

Research Restaurants in Your Hometown: Type into Google gluten-free chicken wings + YOUR CITY). You might be surprised to find a restaurant making gluten-free wings. I already knew about WingWok near me, but I also found another restaurant, the Angry Chicken , that says it only makes gluten-free wings. Im planning to go there soon.

Make Your Own: You can always make your own gluten-free chicken wings at home. I like to bake my wings on high heat for 1+ hours to make them crispy. You can also air-fry your wings to make them crispy without all the grease. Or even better, you can deep fry your own chicken wings on your stovetop or with a deep fryer appliance like this one.

If all else fails, simply enjoy grilled chicken and way less calories and grease. Chick-fil-a, for example, makes grilled chicken nuggets that are gluten free and safe. And Chick-fil-a has a dedicated French fry fryer too .

Whats Gluten Free At Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings is another popular chicken wing restaurant that boasts more than 1,200 locations throughout the U.S. and around the world. Unfortunately, the chicken wings at Buffalo Wild Wings are off limits. Like Wingstop, the wings are cooked in the same fryer as breaded chicken tenders, meaning they are cross contaminated with foods that contain gluten.

After consulting the Buffalo Wild Wings allergen guide, youll see that the traditional wings may contain wheat and gluten due to the way theyre prepared .

If you must eat at Buffalo Wild Wings, according to the allergen guide, you can enjoy the following items:

    • Carrots and celery sticks with blue cheese dressing or ranch
    • Chips with salsa and queso
    • Nachos with chili, beef brisket or grilled chicken
    • Hamburger patty
    • Grilled chicken breast
    • Naked chicken tenders
    • French fries and tots

Ironically, according to the allergen guide, the avocado may contain gluten or wheat. This makes me wonder if the allergen guide is reliable.

Bottom Line: Buffalo Wild Wings does not offer gluten-free wings nor is it celiac safe. Eat at Buffalo Wild Wings at your own risk.

    What To Serve With Wings

Traditionally, buffalo wings are served with celery, carrot sticks, and blue cheese dressing or ranch. Im not a blue cheese person, like at all, so I serve these gluten free chicken wings with ranch. Use dairy-free ranch or blue cheese dressing if needed.

If you are serving wings as more of a meal rather than party food, some great side dish options:

How To Make Gluten Free Chicken Wings

These oven baked wings are super simple to make. They do take about 45 minutes in the oven but the prep work is minimal!

  • Dry the wings: First, pat the wings VERY dry. Dry wings are essential to crispy baked chicken wings. If there is moisture on the wings then they wont crisp up the way you want them to.
  • Prepare the pan: After the wings are dry its time to prepare your pan. Lightly spray an oven safe metal rack and place it on a large baking sheet. Tip: for each clean up line the baking sheet with foil first.
  • Mix the ingredients: Next, mix together all your dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  • Coat the wings: Working with one wing at a time, roll the wings through the gluten free flour and baking powder mixture. Coat each side of the wing evenly.
  • Bake: Place the wings on the rack. Bake them for 20 minutes, flip them, and then bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  • Flip: After you have flipped the wings and returned them to the oven its time to make the sauce.
  • Make the sauce: Add the buffalo sauce ingredients to the pan and heat.
  • Coat: Once the wings are out of the oven turn the oven to low broil. Coat the wings with the buffalo sauce. Then place the wings back on the rack and put them back in the oven.
  • Broil: Broil for 2 to 5 minutes or until the sauce begins to caramelize.
  • Serve: Serve the wings with celery, carrot sticks, and blue cheese or ranch dressing.
  • Gluten Free Garlic Parmesan Sauce

The secret ingredient to this meal is the garlic parmesan sauce which is made by Buffalo Wild Wings. This sauce is labeled gluten-free on Buffalo Wild Wings website. As always all of my recipes are gluten-free because my husband has celiac disease, which is when you are allergic to gluten. However, if you are concerned because it is not labeled gluten-free on the bottle you could always make your own sauce and I found this recipe at The Spruce Eats.
