List Of Gluten Free Cereals Tested For Hidden Gluten

General Mills recalling “Gluten-free” Cheerios for allergy risk

Looking for a list of gluten-free cereals?Curious what cereals are gluten free? If yes, not only have I researched each cereal brand, but also I tested each brand for hidden gluten. Ill discuss whether Lucky Charms, Cheerios, Kix and Fruity Pebbles are truly gluten free or full of gluten. This post contains affiliate links. Please see my disclosures.

Have you ever wondered which of your favorite cereal brands are still safe to eat now that youre on a gluten-free diet?

Is Raisin Bran gluten free? And what about Special K, Crispix and Cocoa Pebbles?

In this article, I share which mainstream brands of cereal are gluten free, and many of them I put to the hidden gluten test too. I share which cereals are gluten free, and which are full of gluten.

People with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities cannot eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. Gluten destroys the lining of the small intestine in people with celiac disease, causing nutritional deficiencies and a slew of disorders. It also creates inflammation and leaky gut in the 18 million people suffering from non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Did you know that gluten creates inflammation in all humans? Its true and you can read more about it in this article, Does Gluten Cause Inflammation in Everyone?

While gluten is clearly found in many cereals you love like Frosted Mini Wheat , its not so clear if its found in products that do not include wheat, barley or rye.

Are Fries At Mcdonalds Gluten

No, McDonalds French fries are not gluten-free. They are cooked in a shared fryer and contain additives that include wheat. What is this? According to Burger Kings allergen menu, Burger King French fries are also cooked in a shared fryer, meaning they have a high risk of cross contamination with gluten ingredients.

Whats The Debate About

The debate has to do with the testing, and Tricia Thompson of Gluten-Free Watchdog is our advocate in this. According to Tricia, who traveled to General Mills, GM is reporting a lot mean by combining 12 to 18 boxes of cereal, grinding them together and testing the results.

And when they shared extraction values with Tricia, it revealed that while most extractions were under 20 ppm, some were above 20 ppm.

Gluten Dude also visited General Mills and they sent him an email in response to the concerns expressed by Tricia. While they cited numbers well below 20 ppm, they were again citing mean results.

The problem with mean values is that any samples that are over 20 ppm are getting diluted by the lower value samples. That works for some things, but not for people who need to avoid gluten 100% of the time.

Tricia Thompson says,

Based on extraction values shared with me I am not fully confident that every box of Yellow Box Cheerios from the 88 lots produced at the time of my visit to General Mills contains a level of gluten less than 20 parts per million.

And that is where the debate is centered. Some believe that every box should test to less than 20 ppm gluten. Not an average.

Whats Worse Than Gluten In Your Morning Bowl: Sugar

Listen, were not big fans of gluten its why we left it out of our product line. But if we were to battle it out with one ingredient, and one ingredient only, we wouldnt be inviting gluten into the ring. Rather, wed love to duke it out with sugar.

Roughly 1% of the United States population, or about three million people, have celiac disease. Not exactly a fun statistic. But you know whats even more staggering? Almost 10%, or 30 million Americans, are now living with diabetes. When we bring in those who are prediabetic, the numbers skyrocket to 100 million. So before you tear open a box of sugary apple cinnamon gluten-free granola, allow us to direct your attention to another aspect of its nutrition label.

In many gluten-free cereals, sugar is one of the most prevalent ingredients. In Honey Nut Cheerios sugar is listed as the second ingredient. Three-fourths of a cup contains 22 grams of carbohydrates, nine of which come from sugar.

The American Heart Association recommends women consume 25 grams and men 36 grams of sugar per day. In other words, that small bowl of cereal youre pouring accounts for roughly one third of your allotted sugar for the day. A half cup of low-fat milk brings its up to over half.

Are Cheerios Oat Crunch Gluten

Honey Nut Cheerios Gluten

Cheerios Oat Crunch are not considered gluten-free by the General Mills company. Youll want to steer clear of this flavor as well as Cheerios Oat Crunch Oats N Honey if youre following a gluten-free diet.

There may not be specific ingredients that contain gluten in the ingredient list, but the brand does not state it is gluten-free, meaning they likely share equipment and machinery that also processes gluten containing grains.

Meet Cheerios Oat Crunch, A Satisfyingly Tasty And Crunchy Cereal

This post has been sponsored by SheSpeaks, Inc., General Mills and Cheerios. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Do you like cold cereal? Cereal is a food that takes many people back to their childhood. Its possibly the first meal that a child can easily prepare themselves, creating a sense of independence. Its quick and easy to make, and perfect for any time of the day. It even works without milk, as a snack eaten by hand.

Over the years its been interesting to watch cereal evolve. One brand thats still out there and more popular than ever is Cheerios. These days, theres more to Cheerios than meets the eye. Take a walk down the cereal aisle in Walmart and right near the bright, yellow box were all familiar with youll find a new brown box containing NEW Cheerios Oat Crunch. I was curious about this new product so I purchased a box.

Meet Cheerios Oat Crunch.

Take a close look at the Os and youre able to see and feel the texture of the whole oats in the middle.

Current Research On Oats

There have been a number of research studies performed to evaluate the safety of oat consumption. Many of them report that components in oat proteins cause inflammation and elicit damage in patients with gluten sensitivity. Most recently, a study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that some forms of oat protein triggered and antibody reaction. Another study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology found two varieties of oat proteins were responsible for increased intraepithelial T-cell density and IFN- production .

In 2012 a research study was published identifying a

direct correlation of the immunogenicity of the different oat varieties with the toxicity of peptides present in their avenin sequences.

In plain English please Proteins in oat cereal stimulated an immune response similar to what is seen from wheat.

The studies above were all published after Jan. of 2011. In medicine, it can take 20-30 years for new information to become common knowledge among doctors. So I dont expect that many physicians will be talking about the potential for oat to be a problem for those with gluten sensitivity. That being said, lets take a look at a comprehensive review of the medical literature that was published in 2011 compiling 75 studies published on the topic since 1953. The summary from the authors are quoted below:

Wait Didnt Cheerios Used To Contain Wheat

Years back, Cheerios used to contain wheat starch and was listed as an ingredient. According to Gluten Free and More, even when this ingredient was listed, this ingredient was only used in one mill and only then occasionally.

The Cheerios website states that Cheerios have always been made of oats, which are naturally gluten free. However, conventional farming practices as well as common grain handling procedures allow chances for gluten containing grains to co-mingle with our gluten free oats.

To make Cheerios gluten-free, we have to separate the oats from grains that contain gluten, which are different sizes and shapes. Our cleaning house can sort 3.5 million pounds of oats every day.

They have since updated not only their ingredients to use oat flour, they also dont use wheat starch any longer. The company even has a whole section on their website dedicated to showing you how their product is now gluten-free as it wasnt before.

They batch test oats for gluten before theyre processed into cereal, ensuring that there are less than 20ppm as per the FDAs standards to meet the gluten-free criteria. Heres what they have to say about testing the oats used in Cheerios:

The most practical approach is to test the finished product in batches. FDA considers the 20 parts per million threshold to be safe for consumption ofGluten Free cereals. Batch testing can be done in a number of ways, but the most commonly used method is a gluten-free test kit. These kits are designed to measure the amount of gluten in the product, which is then compared to the FDAs threshold of 20 ppm.

If the gluten level is above the threshold, the test results are sent to a lab to confirm that the food is safe to consume. Some companies also offer a gluten free label on their products to help consumers make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase a product that has been tested to be gluten free.

Can Be Part Of A Balanced Diet:

Cheerios can be added to any healthy diet plan but make sure to add all the other nutrients in the diet. However, use the cheerios in moderation If you like sugary flavors.

Cheerios are a rich source of nutrients like calcium, iron, and vitamin B12, but it contains a very low amount of protein.

For more protein, try to make cheerios with high-protein non-dairy milk you can also add a scoop of nut butter or nuts. Tofu scrambles and vegan eggs can be a good option as side dishes with cheerios.

Topping the cheerios cereals with fresh fruits like berries can increase the number of minerals and vitamins you take.

Cheerios are also low in fats. Healthy fats can be added to cheerios by adding hemp, chia, and flax seeds. These seeds will provide not only healthy fats but also a large amount of fiber as well.

    Cheerios Is Going Gluten

GAH! You guys. I am sooooo jazzed that I was invited to write this sponsored post about Cheerios going gluten-free. Weve been waiting for this for years, literally.

My 15-year-old daughter has been on a gluten-free diet since she was 7. Shes always done great with it, mainly because she remembers how bad she felt when she was eating gluten. But there are a few things shes really missed. Crusty French bread is one. Cheerios is another.

Weve tried every alternative, gluten-free, O-shaped cereal we can find, but none of them taste anything like real Cheerios. So, my girl has spent eight years wistfully watching her younger siblings enjoy their Honey Nut Cheerios , lamenting her glutenless lot in life.

So imagine her giddiness when she found out that Cheerios was making all five Cheerios varieties gluten-free. And then imagine MY giddiness when Cheerios invited me to try them out and write about the experience. JOY JOY JOY in our house!

We already knew we loved Cheeriosthe question was, Would the gluten-free ones taste the same? Well, that question was immediately answered when my daughter ripped open the box of Honey Nut Cheerios, shoveled a handful into her mouth, and exclaimed, Theyre JUST like I remember!

Now, I wouldnt necessarily trust her taste buds, having not had a Cheerio in eight years. But my other two Cheerios-lovers cant tell the difference, and neither can I. And Ive been eating Cheerios for almost forty years. So, there you go.

Review: Cheerios Cinnamon Oat Crunch Cereal

    Gluten Free Cheerios

Which cereals go to the gym?

Its becoming easier to tell. Previously, it was clear that the burly likes of Raisin Bran and Grape Nuts totally work outand that Wheat on the bench press? Totally Shreddedwhile Tony the Tigers protein-deprived Frosted Flakes definitely skip leg day.

But other classic cereals? Unclear. But with the release of Cheerios new Cinnamon Oat Crunch cereal, we know original Cheerios must be wimpy as a honey-soaked pool noodle, because these oat-specked rings are true cereal alpha grains.

Evoking the appearance of both Cheerios Protein and Honey Ohs, Cinnamon Oat Crunch Cheerios trade muscly protein for stomach-rumbling fiber, with some remaining from the scaly layer of oat shard coating each like wholesome armor.

Ive heard good things leading up to this review, so Im ready to go toe-to-toe in the ring with this no pain, no grain gym rat.

After a few bites, a lot of possible comparisons feel right for Cinnamon Oat Crunch. It has a lot of the twinkling cinnamon bun sweetness of the similar-sounding Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but with a heartier, toaster oat base that rises above CTCs cinnamon-farming hollow rice fields.

Ill apologize to everyones childhoods for that mental image.

But I think the best cereal comparison for Cheerios Cinnamon Oat Crunch is Cinnamon Puffins. Like Barbaras practically grilled cinnamon pillows, Cinnamon CheeriOat Crunch has a near molasses-like sweetness over its warm cinnamon and oat base.
